This thesis is an archaeological analysis of the ceramics from the multi-component pre-contact archaeological site BiFw-6, which is located within Leamy Lake Park in Gatineau, QC at the confluence of the Ottawa and Gatineau rivers. BiFw-6 has evidence of human occupation from the Early Woodland through to the Contact period, with a very strong representation during the Middle Woodland period. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonbinary and genderfluid adults did information work to discover their gender identities as they explored information on social media, online, and in person. Due to cisnormative restrictions, this information was necessary to identify and validate their gender identity as authentic. During the pandemic, more nonbinary people were able to self-recognize their own gender because there was more time for reflection and more access to nonbinary narratives online, including representations of nonbinary life that defied White, thin, androgynous ideals. Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using multi-resolution CT techniques, this project examined the visibility of identifiable skeletal traits in mummified avian bundles from ancient Egypt and the specificity with which avian taxa can be identified with digital 3D scans. Six mummified birds were scanned and processed with a deep learning segmentation algorithm. Three raptors were successfully identified as Falco tinnunculus, a species associated with the Egyptian goddess Isis. Analyses revealed that low-resolution (~110-80 μm) micro-CTs are sufficient for visualizing the bird skeleton (specifically the accessory pygostyle bones and distal wing sesamoid bones), while high-resolution (~30-20 μm) is necessary only for minute cranial details (the scleral …

Tattooing is a stressor that could have adaptive benefits. Previous research indicates that endocrine and immune systems adjust to the stress of modern electric tattooing over lifetime experience, but it is unclear how these systems react to traditional hand-tap tattooing. Unbalanced or absent Indigenous representation in interpretive materials at government administered heritage sites in settler colonial contexts can create contention and perpetuate a misinformed or one-dimensional visitor experience and historical narrative. This research therefore examines representation in interpretive materials accessible in 2019 at heritage sites with Indigenous ancestral connections in settler-colonial contexts. This study uses 10 U.S. case study heritage sites and two supplementary sites in Washington, Idaho, and Hawai‘i. At the same time, Taussig describes ableism as "the atmosphere we breathe." Disability Studies scholarship has done much to identify how ableism operates in the everyday lives of disabled and non-disabled people alike; however, little work has been done to articulate it in terms of the atmospheric quality that Taussig discusses.

The coastal province of Manabí Ecuador has some of the highest rates of deforestation in Latin America, and remaining fragments are home to two primate species threatened with extinction – the mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata aequatorialis), and the Ecuadorian white-fronted capuchin (Cebus aequatorialis). We examine various forms of helping behavior among Tsimane Amerindians of Bolivia, focusing on the provision of shelter, childcare, food, sickcare, cultural influence, and traditional story knowledge. Kin selection theory traditionally explains nepotistic nurturing of youth by closely related kin. However, less attention has been given to understanding the help provided by individuals without close genetic relatedness. To explain who provides various forms of help, we evaluate support for several predictions derived from kin selection theory. Introduction: The shape of the spine in the sagittal plane undergoes evolution, which occurs specifically in children and adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). The aim of the study was to verify the variability of body features and indicators in relation to the features and parameters of body posture in children and adolescents with IS. Materials and Methods: 61 measurements of children and adolescents (three age groups) with IS were collected. Body height, body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, scoliosis major curve angle, thoracic kyphosis angle, lumbar lordosis angle, spine length, and pelvic tilt were measured.
