Test Excavations At Site 41bu49 Burleson County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Testing of Site 41BU49 on FM 696 in Burleson County, Texas, was under-taken in March 1987 to determine eligibility for inclusion within the National Register of Historic Places and to make a recommendation for nomination as a State Archeological Landmark. Testing also was under-taken to determine site depth, cultural context, and archaeological significance. The site is located along a hill slope overlooking Buffalo Creek and consists of a shallow, low-density cultural deposit which may have been impacted by agricultural activities in the past. The exact site limit could not be determined due to heavy vegetation covering most of the area. …

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41cj75 And 41cj76 Comanche County, Texas, Wayne C. Young Jan 1987

Archaeological Testing Of Sites 41cj75 And 41cj76 Comanche County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological testing of two sites in western Comanche County, 41CJ75 and 41CJ76, by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during April 1987 has shown that both sites are shallow, low density, prehistoric campsites. Portions of both sites outside the right-of-way of SH 36 have been impacted by cultivation and site integrity has been lost. Those portions within the right-of-way are located within steep backslopes which made testing difficult. Site 41CJ75 was found to be only 10 cm deep except where the SDHPT had placed recent fill on the site. Site 41CJ76 was located along a very steep …

A modern two-lane roadway with 8 ft. surfaced shoulders and a 4 ft. flush median is to …

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson Jan 1987

Helminth Remains From Prehistoric Indian Coprolites On The Colorado Plateau, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly, Glenn A. Anderson

Karl Reinhard Publications

Examination of coprolites excavated from archaeological sites in the Americas demonstrates excellent preservation of helminth eggs and, in some cases, larvae. To gain an understanding of helminth parasitism in prehistory on the Colorado Plateau of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, 319 coprolites from 5 archaeological sites were analyzed. Helminth eggs and larvae were recovered after the coprolites were rehydrated, screened, and sedimented. At a sixth site, soils excavated from 5 rooms used as latrine areas were processed with palynological techniques. The results indicate that all but 1 of the prehistoric populations examined were infected with intestinal worms. The helminths implicated …

Prehistoric Firewood Exploitation: A Case Study From The Carolinian Biotic Province, David Gordon De Fant Apr 1986

Prehistoric Firewood Exploitation: A Case Study From The Carolinian Biotic Province, David Gordon De Fant

Masters Theses

A case study approach is applied to the problem of prehistoric firewood selection and utilization within a heterogeneous woodland environment. Prefaced by an indepth survey of theoretical and methodological approaches relevant to understanding resource exploitation, a wood charcoal analysis of the Schwerdt site (20AE127) is presented. This analysis is then discussed in regard to environmental, preservational, and functional contexts. It is suggested that this wood charcoal assemblage represents a subtle yet pervasive pattern of firewood selectivity operating within the overt bounds of expedient procurement.
