The Penobscot language has been obsolescent for over twenty-five years or more. A rather large body of rnaterial has been gathered at irregular periods, but the labor and cost of assemblage, organization, and presentation have been awesome. A recent grant through the Penobscot Nation to Frank Siebert from the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities is duly acknowledged to provide the funds to complete the task and to furnish the required secretarial aid.

This work was sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of the preliminary studies leading to planned developments within the Recreation Area.

Site 41ZP73 was found to contain significant prehistoric archeological deposits which date to both the Late Archaic and the Late Prehistoric periods. On June 9, 1980, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, investigated a reported discovery of human bones where construction is underway at the Victoria Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, Victoria, Texas.

The Center was informed of the discovery by David Welsh of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, who requested that an investigation be made by qualified persons to assess the bone material and immediate surrounding for the purpose of determining the potential importance of the cultural resource.

In May 1980, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, carried out an archaeological survey of the proposed route of an eight-inch pipeline to be installed by the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. The pipeline will extend from the Scurlock Oil Company tank farm about one kilometer southwest of Sabine Pass to a landfall on the Gulf Coast at a point about six kilometers west of Texas Point (Fig. 1).

During September 1980, archaeological sites 41TG114, 41TG115, and 41TG116 were tested for prehistoric cultural debris to determine their size, depth, cultural affiliations, and archaeological significance. Testing was conducted by the Archaeology Section of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation under the Procedures for the Protection of Cultural and Historic Properties (36 C.F.R., Part 800).

Testing results indicate that these sites contain very little cultural debris or intact stratigraphic deposits. Sites 41TG114 and 41TG116 appear to represent very minor surface campsites. In March 1977, excavations were conducted in front of Alamo Shrine where flagstone paving was being replaced by the City of San Antonio. The subsurface investigations sampled and described the soil stratigraphy which has accumulated through 2.5 centuries of occupation. The distinctive soil levels contained datable cultural materials which relate to some of the major events which took place from the earliest settlement of Mission San Antonio de Valero through subsequent periods of Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-Texan occupations. The primary aim of the excavations was to search for evidence of the original alignment and character of the Houston Horne in order to assist efforts to restore the structure to its original configurations. The White Walnut Creek research area consists of approximately 1437 ha in eight sections of T5S, R2W, Perry County, Illinois. Physiographically speaking, the study area lies within the southern portion of the till plains region known as the Mt. Vernon Hill Country and is characterized by mature topography as reflected in gentl~ rolling hills and broad alluvial valleys. Floristically, this drainage is part of the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest as defined by Braun (1950).

Archaeological Reports

The 1979 Settlement Pattern Survey (SPS 79) in Allegan County, Michigan observed and recorded a total of 74 prehistoric sites which revealed 10 identifiable components. The majority of sites were small lithic scatters which did not yield culturally diagnostic artifacts. In general the results of this field season conformed with expectations based upon soils, landform and drainage patterns in the survey universe. This report describes and evaluates the significance of the archaeologi ca 1 data recovered.

Late Pleistocene And Recent Archaeology And Geomorphology Of The South Shore Of Harney Lake, Oregon, Keith Donald Gehr

The present study was a response to the discovery of two artifacts found in a ditch wall near Harney Lake, Oregon. These were lying on a buried lake floor that appeared to be of late Pleistocene or early Recent age. Other sediments exposed in the ditch seemed to relate to at least some of the phases of the pluvial lake sequence in the Harney Basin. Three problems were considered: (1) the geomorphology and dating of the pluvial lake stillstands, (2) whether the original artifacts were part of a larger early site, and (3) whether there was any relationship between archaeological …

Aboriginal Clay Figurines From The Upper Rogue Valley In Southwestern Oregon, Lyman Patrick Deich

Dissertations and Theses

A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Two Sites In Uvalde County: The Elm Creek Site (41 Uv 67), Wayne C. Young

Site 41 UV 67 represented a shallow and mixed multicomponent prehistoric campsite on an intermittent drainage in eastern Uvalde County, Texas. A possible living floor was located during testing of the site. This floor contained two hearths and four possible postholes in a mixed context with prehistoric artifacts of differing temporal periods and modern historic trash. Due to the badly mixed nature of the deposits and the lack of cultural integrity, the excavation was discontinued.

During the month of October 1975, a small prehistoric site, 41 UV 68, was subjected to an archaeological test. No archaeological features were located but a zone containing artifactual material of mixed temporal context was explored. The site appears to be a minor manifestation of prehistoric occupations in the Uvalde area.
