Nineteenth-Century Depictions Of Disabilities And Modern Metadata: A Consideration Of Material In The P. T. Barnum Digital Collection, Meghan R. Rinn

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The Library of Congress subject headings have been examined in the past for their classification of subjects relating to race, gender, and sexuality. Overlooked is subject headings that relate to disabilities. In the course of creating records for the archival and object material that form the P.T. Barnum Digital Collection, the project discovered the imperfections of the Library of Congress subject headings, and the need to develop standards and protocols for the material. Nancy Caroline "Nannie" Gresham Biscoe moved with her five children from Forest, MIssissippi, to Arkadelphia in the 1880s following the death of her husband. Soon after Ouachita Baptist College opened in 1886 Nannie began teaching in the Preperatory Department, continuing there for over a decade until she joined the faculty of Arkadelphia High School. Her teaching career spanned some fifty years. She also served as the first president of the Arkadelphia Woman's LIbrary Association.

Nannie and her family (children Don, Mattie, Hamilton "Hamp" and Gibbs, and an adopted nephew, Pat) lived less than two blocks from the campus of Ouachita …

From in-house research to anticipating researcher needs, digital collections at Minnesota State University, Mankato have been invaluable as we begin celebrating the sesquicentennial of the university. In this lightning-round-style session, University Archives staff will present on current digital projects that have been instrumental as we embark on the 150th anniversary of the University. Nora Evelyn Cordingley worked for the Roosevelt Memorial Association at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace. She helped Hermann Hagedorn build the extensive collection of materials related to President Theodore Roosevelt starting in the early 1920s until the collection moved to Harvard University in the early 1940s. She also helped in the project to publish Theodore Roosevelt's letters. Ms. Cordingley died in her office within the Widener Library in 1951.

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Musselman Library's Special Collections and College Archives at Gettysburg College has worked with over 70 student curators on art gallery exhibitions and public history exhibits. These curatorial experiences provide hands-on interactions with artifacts and artworks and high-impact collaborations among students, interns, archivists, librarians, historians, digital projects specialists, gallery directors, conservators, and preparators. The final result is often breathtaking and always informative. This presentation discusses practical recommendations and workflows for well timed, well researched, and effectively installed student curated exhibits.

Una Roberts was born in Gainesville, Arkansas, August 6, 1893, the oldest child of Hulette Wayman and Mary Moffitt Roberts. H.W. Roberts was a teacher and Una was educated under his private tutoring until her senior year of high school when she attended Cabot High School, Cabot, Arkansas, graduating in 1909.

Una had completed her freshman year in Ouachita Baptist College in 1910, when a serious illness resulting from a fall when she was ten years old prevented further college attendance. So, she began the study of music, and graduated from Baars Music Studios, Little Rock, in June of 1913. …

The Comforter newsletter was published monthly in Missouri by Elder Charles Surbaugh for almost five decades "in the interest of the Primitive Bapists." Surbaugh died September 22, 2014, at age eighty-three and responsibility for the newsletter was assumed by Elder Ricky Myers of Mississippi.

This collection contains scattered issues of "The Comforter," a Primitive Baptist newsletter, from 2010 through 2014.

Over the past decade, the University Libraries' Digital Collections have grown from an assemblage of discrete projects into two distinct programs that curate, manage, and publish digitized and born-digital materials online for educational and scholarly uses by Grand Valley State University's community and the wider public.

Background: The objective of this research was to conduct a systematic review and cost analysis to summarize, from the Ministry of Health perspective, the costs families might incur because of their child’s prescription for refractive errors and amblyopia correction. Methods: Databases including MEDLINE, Embase, BIOSIS, CINAHL, HEED, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library as well as the gray literature were searched. Systematic review was conducted using EPPI-Reviewer 4. Percentage difference in cost of glasses and patches per patient per various diagnoses were computed. The goal of the SHARE initiative, a partnership between the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Center for Open Science (COS), is to build a “free, open, data set about research and scholarly activities across their life cycle.” As of August 2017, 161 repositories and publishers have made metadata available to SHARE for harvesting, and the aggregated data set is available for searching. Many metadata providers are institutional repositories utilizing the bepress Digital Commons platform whose metadata is harvested through the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) protocol for repository interoperability. The K-12 schools in Paris and Bourbon County, Kentucky were segregated from the earliest schools developed after the U.S. Civil War up to the 1960s. This presentation was an overview of the development of the schools, the decrease in the student populations, and school integration in the Paris and Bourbon County schools. The presentation was an opportunity for all students, of all races, to share their memories and the memorabilia they had with them.
