One of the greatest challenges that American public libraries have faced is serving the disadvantaged and homeless population. This research project analyzed publication trends in LIS literature from the past 20 years pertaining to research related to public libraries and the economically disadvantaged, specifically publication trend over time, core journals, most prolific lead authors, and focus of the studies.

As gender equality has become a more prominent issue and men and women have become more equal, one would expect this change to be reflected in children’s literature. This study examines four Newbery-Award winning books to determine if this change is apparent.
Emerging Roles: Academic Libraries Crossing The Digital Divide, Kenneth Angell
Emerging Roles: Academic Libraries Crossing The Digital Divide, Kenneth Angell
SLIS Connecting
For every advance of information and communication technology in the 20thand 21st centuries, there has been gap between those who can readily adopt and benefit from it and those who cannot. As higher education becomes increasingly enmeshed in Internet-based learning, academic libraries will need to maintain and even increase digital literacy and fluency instruction in spite of presumed reduced need. Furthermore, academic libraries themselves will need to examine their own status in the divide.

Open-Source Opens Doors: A Case Study On Extending Archivesspace Code At Unlv Libraries, Cyndi Shein, Carol Ou, Karla Irwin, Carlos Lemus
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries is in its third year of implementing the open-source archival collection management application ArchivesSpace, and is sharing UNLV-developed code that extends ArchivesSpace’s built-in functions. The case study demonstrates how adopting and building upon community-created code and developing original local code is improving critical workflows that support creating collection descriptions, cleaning up metadata, and disseminating finding aids that are easier for researchers to comprehend. UNLV discusses how using an open-source application has opened up opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration, moving UNLV further down the path toward full implementation and closer to the goal of …

Marian Library Faculty Publications
In the summer of 2017, the Marian Library—a special library devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary within the larger University of Dayton Libraries system—completed a move of its rare book and archival collections into a new space within the main library building. The space, previously leased to the Society of Mary provincial archives, was already outfitted with a Liebert system for temperature and humidity controls, as well as shelving and some furniture.
Prior to the move, the rare book collection and archival holdings were stored in less than ideal conditions. In 2014, a consultant from Lyrasis conducted a preservation assessment …

Conflicting Philosophies: Two Librarians And A Presidential Bibliophile, Meg Miner
Conflicting Philosophies: Two Librarians And A Presidential Bibliophile, Meg Miner
Scholarly Publications
This case study explores how one personal interest of President Minor Myers, jr.—that of a life-long book collector—influenced the University’s library collections and its leaders. Myers arrived with a desire to make IWU a nationally recognized, Phi Beta Kappa–affiliated institution. As one tactic for achieving these goals, Myers actively engaged in library collection development through practices shaped by his methods of book collecting. Bulk acquisitions—through gifts-in-kind and lot purchases—and a prohibition on weeding aided in his pursuits. His vision for the library challenged the style of the first university librarian (UL) who resigned two years after Myers’ arrival. The actions …

Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Disaster, loss, and failure preoccupy the minds of many digital preservation professionals and yet, despite the prominence of digital disaster planning guidelines which seem to anticipate failure, there is limited discussion of experience with preservation system or network failures, which are often framed as inevitable in digital preservation. Despite this framing, negative perceptions of failure influence the digital preservation discourse by associating failure with poor planning, unreliability, and untrustworthiness on the part of institutions. This article will interrogate the issue of failure within the digital preservation field and consider the need for more conversations around network failure and recovery. The …
We Need To Talk: Educating Internal Stakeholders On Repository Needs, James Williamson, Felicia Williamson
We Need To Talk: Educating Internal Stakeholders On Repository Needs, James Williamson, Felicia Williamson
Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories
In creating, managing, and adapting digital collections, managers often face hurdles of technical misunderstanding and sometimes, intimidation. By educating internal stakeholders and creating allies, information managers can facilitate institutional change and are much more able to request and receive funding to pursue innovative programs requiring technical infrastructure.
Felicia Williamson, Archivist at the Dallas Holocaust Museum, will discuss the ongoing efforts to build a more robust technical infrastructure at a small non-profit Museum. Former efforts did not employ metadata standards. Moreover, online access to collections seemed a far off goal. Two main needs emerged: to create and maintain robust metadata and …

Library Presentations
UK Libraries has held a series of archives workshops to help community organizations preserve and manage their records. In this session, archivists and attendees share personal and professional reasons for hosting/attending the workshop, workshop challenges and successes, and more. Featured are audio and video clips from interviews with community members who attended the workshops. An open forum follows to discuss:
- What are individual and community needs and interests?
- Is sharing knowledge through a workshop setting enough?
- What barriers prevent individual or community collaborations with repositories? How can these be removed or lowered?
- And more!

A university's special collections is often a featured stop on campus tours, whether for visiting dignitaries, prospective students, or guest lecturers. This poster presentation highlights successful planning that has allowed a special collections without dedicated classrooms or galleries to utilize limited exhibit spaces in the reading room for rotating and long-term exhibits that align with library-wide initiatives while also focusing student and visitor attention on curatorial strengths, cross-disciplinary opportunities, emerging research trends, and hidden collections.
This study outlines the exhibiting of the University of Arkansas Libraries Special Collections. Founded in 1967, the department is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. …
