Developing Scan-And-Return Collecting At Unlv Libraries, Emily Lapworth

Library Faculty Presentations

This presentation discusses how UNLV is providing access to primary
sources that would otherwise remain in the hands of private individuals.
Through their innovative “scan and return” process, UNLV is borrowing
important historical documents, digitizing them, and then returning the
originals to the owners. The digital surrogates become available through
UNLV’s Digital Collections.

'Very Quiet Day, Vague Tension': Digitizing And Sharing The Stories Of School Desegregation And Busing In Boston, Andrew Elder

Joseph P. Healey Library Publications

In the summer of 2015, University Archives & Special Collections at UMass Boston began to work with a number of area archival institutions to create “a digital library of material that can be widely disseminated for both curricular and scholarly use” related to the history of school desegregation and busing in Boston. Too often, the history of Boston school desegregation seems weighted down by some of the most visible characters involved – politicians, policy-makers, court officials – so we decided early on to focus largely on identifying materials that tell a more complex, personal history of school desegregation and busing …

Creating An Institutional Repository, Nathan R. Schwartz Apr 2016

Creating An Institutional Repository, Nathan R. Schwartz

Selected Faculty Publications

Creating an institutional repository (IR) requires much forethought and planning. Setting up a university IR committee will help direct policy, collection goals and encourage faculty participation. There are many things to consider in design such as branding, policy, copyright, collection development, author submissions and discoverability. Publishing in an IR requires original works, and copyright issues arise, especially if authors wish to publish in other journals. Our IR goal was to promote scholarship and encourage faculty to create publishing profile space in SelectedWorks, which can become a virtual curricula vita. The ultimate goal is discoverability and open access contribution to scholarship …

UNL Libraries: White Papers

Overview and Purpose Statement

In February 2016, Charlene Maxey-Harris proposed a charge to the UNL Libraries faculty to review the local liaison program. The original charge was for the creation of a team to investigate different, new liaison models and research that will allow the Libraries to restructure the current system to develop more collaborative partnerships with research centers and departments; improve the way liaisons communicate and interact with departments, research centers, and other new campus initiatives; allow liaisons to work in their areas of strength; and find ways to assess the impact of liaison engagement and outreach. Digitally Archiving History: A Game Plan For Large, Unruly Archival Collections With Limited Staffing, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

In this paper, an outline of workflows currently in use for the
digitization of a large archival collection at Kent State University
is provided. A blend of both in-house digitization and outsourcing
methods used to achieve the goals of the project with limited staffing
and resources. Considerations of the format, as well as the
capabilities and available equipment and software, are made
throughout the process in regard to institutional capabilities.
Selected workflows for digitization are embedded into the daily
routine of the staff, reflected in a growing digital archive that is
available for patrons regardless of location. Materials without

University Of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries Workflow And Organizational Analysis, Carol Pitts Diedrichs, Lisa German

UNL Libraries: White Papers

Libraries everywhere are undergoing tremendous transformation in staffing, services, and collections. With the need to create new programs and services, it is critical that resources are deployed in the most efficient way possible. Library workforces across the country are aging and succession planning is important for libraries to thrive. The University of Nebraska at Lincoln Libraries invited us to review staffing, examine the organizational structure, communication pathways, and general workflows in the DARM and to make recommendations for changes that would improve and enhance service quality, improve productivity, and best align library faculty and staff with organizational priorities and needs. …

Library Services Publications

For the past ten years, the Archives and Preservation Unit at Minnesota State University, Mankato has been working with digital collections, but we lacked a formal digital preservation plan until the DigiVengers came to save the day. A small but mighty group, the DigiVengers used their super powers to draft a digital preservation plan using various magical gizmos, thing-ma-bobs, doohickeys, and extra-sensory perception gleaned from trial and error. The DigiVengers utilized lessons from conferences and training to harness the power of preservation. We don’t know our final destination yet, but join us as we share our journey with you. You …
