Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. From their ambitions arose a successful newspaper preservation program at the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL). Now in its sixth decade, the program has developed a new way of preserving contemporary born-digital newspapers. Jefferson Medical College yearbooks (published under various titles) are a rich source of Jefferson history. Scott Memorial Library and University Archives and Special Collections have been preserving the yearbooks by digitizing and uploading them to the Jefferson Digital Commons. Yearbooks from 1899 to 1960 were digitized previously and ten more years have been completed and added to the JDC in the latest phase of the project.

This presentation was given at the Panhandle Library Access Network's (PLAN) Innovation Conference: Digitization- Preserving the Past for the Future Conference on August 14th, 2015. The presentation uses a specific collection of directories as a case study of the complications librarians and archivists face in digitizing older materials that may also be quite large, such as a directory. Prime OCR and Abbyy Fine Reader are discussed and their pros and cons covered. Troubleshooting and editing with Adobe Photoshop is also discussed.

I have finished my first draft transcription of the H.L Baugher travel diary and am in the process of proofreading it (which I hope to finish tomorrow!). I have made a finding guide to describe the diary and its contents and digitized several pages containing flower samples as well! Mississippi, the second state to secede from the Union, played a major role in the South’s bid for independence. The state provided troops to Confederate armies in Virginia and in the Mississippi and Tennessee River valleys. Factories in the state provided military equipment and the farms provided foodstuffs. In 2011, the University of Mississippi’s Archives and Special Collections began an ongoing project to digitize a portion of materials related to the Civil War. This started as a means of participating in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries’ (ASERL’s) collaborative digitization project, Civil War in the American South, which was established to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. ASERL’s project provides a single access point for Civil War materials from multiple repositories, and currently includes over 10,000 items from 30 libraries. Some of the most widely requested records at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History are those related to the State’s participation in the American Civil War. The service records of Mississippians who served in the Confederate army, their postwar pension applications, and the list of veteran grave registrations are all frequently used by researchers. In addition to the above mentioned records, there is an often overlooked resource at the archive that might be helpful to someone researching a relative that fought for the Confederacy: the United Daughters of the Confederacy (Mississippi Division) Southern Cross of Honor Records.

In 2008, the Columbia University Libraries EAD Working Group developed workflows for creating EAD finding aids for newly processed collections. These work flows utilized a robust technical infrastructure for managing the EAD files and designed an attractive web presentation for the finding aids. These goals were achieved in 2009. In 2010, the archives unit at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library (RBML), Columbia University decided to apply these workflows to the conversion of all paper based and scanned finding aids into EAD.
