One of the signal moments in the narrative of the biblical Abraham is his insistent and enthusiastic reception of three strangers, a starting point of inspiration for all three Abrahamic traditions as they evolve and develop the details of their respective teachings. On the one hand, welcoming the stranger by remembering “that you were strangers in the land of Egypt” is enjoined upon the ancient Israelites, and on the other, oppressing the stranger is condemned by their prophets throughout the Hebrew Bible.

As a cloistered monk, he became known as a major voice for contemplation, perhaps his greatest gift to spirituality. But in the 1960’s as national and international tensions were becoming increasingly volatile, Thomas Merton began some of his most challenging writing, boldly speaking out against war and violence. In popular management literature corporations are sometimes loosely compared to cults. The comparison is a severe allegation as it implies the transgression of subordinate employees’ integrity. This paper explores to what extent such comparisons with cults are warranted as well as the implications this has for the practice of corporate culture management. On grounds of the author’s unique, first-hand experience in both corporate and cultic environments a retrospective autoethnographic (RAE) approach was chosen to further explore the supposed resemblance. In the mountains of Northern New Mexico, small communities have adapted to desert life through communal management of this scarce resource, known as the acequia system. This paper explores the impact of the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 on the development of Bellingham, Washington, focusing on the transformation of land use and platting over time. The Act provided 320 acres to married white settlers and 160 acres to single white males. This was one of the most important federal acts in settling what would become Washington State. This research focuses on using historical plat maps to identify which Donation Land Claim recipients developed their land into Bellingham, Washington. Climate change and related flooding in the Ganges Delta and Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) Basin region disproportionately impacts marginalized communities. This is examined through the lens of environmental justice by exploring how common themes are portrayed in photography and mainstream media. Fifty photos taken in and around the Ganges Delta and GBM Basin were selected for analysis. Photos were collected from a variety of news articles by international media companies and organizations about flooding and divided into five primary categories: Unnatural Disaster, Aftermath, Life Goes On, Resilience, and Awe-striking.

Our class was studying the use of emojis across different platforms and wanted to explore how stories using emojis could impact young readers. Here, we try to translate the story of Skyler into emoji, providing translations along the way. We replace words completely with emoji, represent phrases with a few emoji, and use additional emoji to make sense of the content, including punctuation. In this book, we explore the character of Skyler, who is a picky eater. But they learn to eat the nutritious food that is good for them. In the end, they even get a reward!

This series of watercolor paintings pays homage to the importance of green spaces in urban environments, specifically within the boundaries of Western Washington University’s (WWU’s) campus. Bellingham, Washington, a relatively rainy and cloudy region, sees a significant number of gray, cloudy days. Gray clouds, combined with gray pavement, combined with the gray ocean, can lead to feelings of dreariness and depression. However, urban planning principles suggest that existing among green spaces (parks, hikes, trees, grass, etc.) plays an integral role in a community’s overall mental health. Mental health is a major problem within the music industry. Professional musicians report higher rates of mental illness (e.g., mood disorders, substance use disorders, eating disorders, increased suicidality) than the general population. While this is not caused by pursuing music as a career, numerous stressors that musicians experience exacerbate this relationship. Musicians experience great financial insecurity, relational sacrifices, difficulties feeling in control, difficulties being objectified, touring stressors, and pressures to use substances. However, musicians also report positive mental health and flourishing; notably, they report eudaimonic indicators of wellbeing such as feelings of personal growth, and high purpose in life. In …

The following is a study of the poetry of Paul Celan as a representation of psychological and social processes present in the written works of Shoah survivors. It begins with an analysis of the place of writing in Jewish culture, then identifies three primary processes which operate in sequence: alienation, individuation, and integration. This project examines how neoliberal economic policies and socialist signifiers have co-existed in Vietnam since the 1980s market reforms. Focusing on Vietnam’s national airline, Vietnam Airlines, I draw on the ideas of Michel Foucault to show how neoliberal governmentality subsumes socialism to shape better citizens, workers, consumers, and human capital. Through an autoethnographic thick description of a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco, I capture neoliberal governmentality's intimate interactions with the subject. Under dictatorships in Spain and Argentina, artists used their mediums to criticize the actions of the Catholic church and oppressive conditions enforced by the government, using allegories, metaphors, and symbolism in their art. While many artists tried to create works that fell within authoritarian guidelines, others intentionally created cinema and literature criticizing the Argentine and Spanish governments, values, and practices, knowing the works would be banned.
