A Descriptive Analysis Of Barriers Faced By The Lgbtq+ Community In Relation To Organized Sport Participation In Their Youth, Jay Hoppes
Masters Theses
Background: Participating in organized sport plays an important role in youth development. The sport environment may exclude different minority groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, because they do not fit within societal norms. Most of the research has focused on the lack of participation from LGBTQ+ youth and has not offered any solutions.
Purpose: (1) To conduct a pilot study in which the LGBTQ+ community identifies constraints faced when participating in organized youth sports. (2) To connect the identified constraints to the benefits of using recreational therapy as a treatment modality to lessen or eliminate said constraints. The research questions asked …

The Transnational Semiotics Of “Policing Murals”: How Representations Of Police Power In Murals Conceal And Reveal State Violence, Vivian A. Swayne
Doctoral Dissertations
Murals tell visual stories that legitimize/delegitimize formations of state power, conceal/reveal state violence, and attract collective interface from diverse parties. Scholars, artists, and organizers have studied murals as an aesthetic medium, tools for social movements, affective memorials, and episodes of conflict in the public space, but patterns and distinctions in the local, global, and digital duration of policing murals requires critical analysis. Policing murals refers to (1) murals made by police (and/or their advocates) to reproduce its preferred representations and (2) the censorship and control of unauthorized murals. Murals painted on police departments share semiotics globally, all of which conceal …
Psychopathy And Moral Decision Making, Dimitra Kourtesi
Psychopathy And Moral Decision Making, Dimitra Kourtesi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Since the 1800s, psychopathy has been regarded as the absence of morality. The goal of our study was to explore whether psychopathic traits can affect the moral decision-making process in sacrificial moral dilemmas. Participants completed multiple self-report measures of psychopathic traits, utilitarian tendencies, and 16 sacrificial moral dilemma vignettes. After each hypothetical vignette, participants decided whether they believed it was morally right, permissible, and whether they behaviorally intended to sacrifice one person to save five people. Positive correlations emerged among all variables, which allowed us to perform a mediation analysis. Instrumental Harm – the idea of sacrificing one individual to …

Building Communities Of Care For Equity, Justice, And Culturally Responsive Practice In Mathematics Education, Nicole Fletcher, B Waid
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Teaching is widely considered one of the “caring professions,” but conceptualizations of care and how care is put into practice in education are not universal. In this article, we draw from a range of perspectives on care that integrate supportive interpersonal relationships, high expectations, and culturally relevant theories of critical care, as well as Queer Theory and Disability Justice, to explore the application of these ideas in mathematics education. We identify key elements for building communities of care in mathematics education contexts: co-constructing community agreements, redefining participation, shifting traditional power structures, collaborative problem solving, and building networks of care beyond …

International Review of Humanities Studies
In Indonesia Multatuli's Max Havelaar is regarded as a powerful indictment of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Extensive research has explored the novel's historical context, social critique, and its influence on Indonesian nationalism, but less attention has been paid to the literary devices that give the novel its enduring emotional power. This paper fills this gap by examining how metaphor and simile presented in the dialogs found in the novel function as key instruments in shaping the reader's experience. Existing studies of Max Havelaar often delve into the novel's historical background, its scathing critique of Dutch colonial practices, and its role …

This research focuses on the rarely discussed topic of the participation of small peasants in the palm oil production chain. Employing ethnohistory, this research unfolds the impact of oil palm expansion on small peasants and indigenous people, especially those who expand their plantations into the forest in Jambi …

Women's Perspectives On Public Transportation In Jakarta, Indonesia – Reliability And Service Quality Insights, Yong Adilah Shamsul Harumain, Lita Sari Barus, Nurfatin Fauzi
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
The provision of public transport is of utmost importance in effectively addressing the needs of women residing in developing nations. Nevertheless, it has been noted that the issue of gender-sensitive public transport lacks substantial consideration in the majority of developing nations worldwide. Universal designs are recognised internationally for their rational and economically efficient characteristics, as they accommodate the needs and preferences of not only women but also other individuals who require or desire access to public transportation. Within the realm of public transport, a controversial topic has emerged regarding the introduction of specialised or unique services. The present debate has …

In War on Record: The Archive and the Afterlife of the Civil War, historian Yael A. Sternhell explores the creation, compilation, and publication of official records of the American Civil War and how archival processes shaped what we understand Civil War history to be today. This book is a logical outgrowth of Sternhell’s previous examinations of Confederate records and Civil War historiography and reflects the “archival turn” that she and other humanities and social sciences scholars have embraced in recent decades. Written in a clear, narrative style and punctuated by a wealth of interesting anecdotes uncovered in the records, …

A Friendship Of Two Prima Donnas: The Letters Of Adelina Patti To Giulia Valda, Jacquelyn Ancelet
LSU Master's Theses
Of the many prima donnas of the nineteenth century, Adelina Patti (1843–1919) stands out as one of the most successful, with a fifty-year international concertizing career. Biographers across multiple languages have covered her career in great depth, but devote little attention to her close friendships. Herman Klein (in The Reign of Patti [1920]) and John Cone (in Adelina Patti: Queen of Hearts [1993]), for instance, claim that Patti was known by many, but understood by few. One who does seem to have understood her and developed a close relationship with her was Giulia Valda (1850–1925), herself a professional singer, if …
