Political Communication In A Multicultural Metropolis: Chinese Ethnic Media And The 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election, Dongwei Lin Jan 2025

Political Communication In A Multicultural Metropolis: Chinese Ethnic Media And The 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election, Dongwei Lin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Chinese are the second largest visible minority group in Canada and the most frequently reported ethnic or cultural origin in Toronto. Mandarin and Cantonese are, respectively, the largest and third largest non-official languages in Toronto. However, little research exists on the role of the Chinese ethnic community in Toronto municipal politics, especially the role of Chinese ethnic media in Toronto municipal elections.

The key argument of this thesis is that “Chinese ethnic media represent complementary public sphere(s) for informing and engaging Chinese Canadians in local political participation and discussion.” Through the 2023 Toronto Mayoral By-Election case study, this thesis examines …

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On College Sport Communications, Will Barnhart Jan 2025

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On College Sport Communications, Will Barnhart

Masters Theses

As Artificial Intelligence technology (AI) becomes increasingly accessible, the importance of understanding its impact on peoples’ work lives is also increasing. One field that has received very little attention in relation to this subject is college sport communications. Prior research has focused on AI within the closely related fields of journalism and public relations, but no previous studies have been conducted on AI and college sport communicators specifically. To address that knowledge gap, this study surveyed members of the College Sport Communicators (CSC) on their attitudes toward AI and their usage of such technology. The data analysis showed that while …

Disney's Postfeminist Follies: Disney’S Postfeminist Portrayal Of Women In The Age Of Fourth Wave Of Feminism, Morgan Crafton Dec 2024

Disney's Postfeminist Follies: Disney’S Postfeminist Portrayal Of Women In The Age Of Fourth Wave Of Feminism, Morgan Crafton

Honors Theses

In 2022, Disney CEO Bob Chepak spoke out against the "Don't Say Gay" bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis’ supporters derisively labeled Disney as “woke." However, the company does not warrant the label. Though Fourth Wave feminism has broadened Disney’s idea of a woman, the entertainment company largely operates with a postfeminist lens that prevents its heroines from being feminist representations of women. Audiences see this in "Frozen," (2013), "Moana" (2016), "Encanto" (2021), and "Turning Red" (2022). Disney’s postfeminist rhetoric allows it to portray supposedly progressive women without challenging societal notions of misogyny. Thus, Disney’s criticisms for “wokeness” …

Barriers And Enablers To Promoting Grandchildren’S Physical Activity And Reducing Screen Time: A Qualitative Study With Australian Grandparents, Timothy Budden, David Coall, Ben Jackson, Hayley Christian, Andrea Nathan, Michelle I. Jongenelis

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: With an increasing number of grandparents providing care to their grandchildren, calls have been made for these caregivers to be considered important stakeholders in encouraging children’s engagement in health-promoting behaviors, such as physical activity. Understanding the perspectives of grandparents who provide care is crucial to informing efforts that aim to increase children’s physical activity, yet little is understood about their perceptions of specific barriers and enablers to promoting children’s physical activity and reducing screen time. The present study sought to explore these perceptions. Methods: Semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews were conducted with grandparents who reported providing care to …

Analysis Of Ecofascist Tendencies On Reddit, Shrey Vohra Oct 2024

Analysis Of Ecofascist Tendencies On Reddit, Shrey Vohra

Major Papers

Eco-fascism is a far-right ideology that attributes climate change to the Global South, focusing on rhetoric about overpopulation and excessive fossil fuel consumption. It avoids addressing systemic issues such as resource distribution and sustainable energy production, instead advocating for a so-called ‘cleansing’ of the world, often through acts of mass violence, as evidenced by the Christchurch shooting. This research builds on literature that adopts a liberatory outlook on climate change, such as decolonialism, ecofeminism and anti-imperialism, to analyze how ecofascist tendencies are expressed in a small-scale sample of a Reddit community that discusses climate change. The study finds that while …

Dangerous Speech As An Atrocity Early Warning Indicator: Measuring Changing Conflict Dynamics, Catherine Buerger, Susan Benesch Oct 2024

Dangerous Speech As An Atrocity Early Warning Indicator: Measuring Changing Conflict Dynamics, Catherine Buerger, Susan Benesch

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Dangerous speech, any expression that can increase the likelihood that someone will commit or condone violence against members of another group, can be a powerful early warning signal of impending mass violence. However, one cannot make a list of words that are dangerous, since the effect of the message depends not only on its content, but also on how it is communicated: by whom, to whom, and under what circumstances. What may be benign in one context may be extremely inflammatory in another. Thus, effective monitoring requires deep knowledge of the local setting and structural factors. The spread of dangerous …

Instrumental Diagnosis Of Placenta Accreta And Obstetric And Perinatal Outcomes: Literature Review And Observational Study, Maria Antonietta Castaldi, Alessandro Piroli Torelli, Pasqualina Scala, Salvatore Giovanni Castaldi, Antonio Mollo, Giorgia Perniola, Mario Polichetti

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Aim. Placenta accreta (PA) is a condition where the placenta is pathologically adherent to the uterus due to a defect in the basal decidua with myometrium invasion by chorionic villi and is classified based on the depth of myometrial invasion by histology. However, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging have excellent accuracy. In this study, we investigated clinical benefits of early instrumental diagnosis of PA, especially in reducing maternal-fetal complications and improving perinatal outcomes. We also evaluated diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging on placental invasiveness assessment.

Methods. In this review and observational retrospective study, risk factors …

Influencer Authenticity: To Grow Or To Monetize, Cristina Nistor, Matthew Selove, J. Miguel Villas-Boas Sep 2024

Influencer Authenticity: To Grow Or To Monetize, Cristina Nistor, Matthew Selove, J. Miguel Villas-Boas

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Social media influencers can grow their number of followers by endorsing products that are authentic for their social media persona or, alternatively, monetize their followers by endorsing a wider variety of products. We develop a dynamic model in which an influencer continuously decides whether to be authentic as she balances increasing awareness with generating revenues from sponsored posts. We derive conditions in which the influencer is authentic during an early growth phase, but she becomes inauthentic once a large enough fraction of potential followers are aware of her. Celebrities become inauthentic at a lower awareness level than pure social media …

Practicing Feminist Disability Pedagogy: Building Interdependence Through A Classroom Participation Menu, Kristen L. Cole Sep 2024

Practicing Feminist Disability Pedagogy: Building Interdependence Through A Classroom Participation Menu, Kristen L. Cole

Feminist Pedagogy

Following the lead of Parsloe & Smith (2022), this article explains and advocates possible modes of participation that consider the disabled, chronically ill, and systemically vulnerable students and faculty who are fighting to succeed in higher education. The way participation is measured in college classes is often ableist in nature; thus, it is important to unpack the ableist assumptions that undergird how we arrange and assess participation. Utilizing Knoll’s (2009) explication of interdependency as a practice of feminist disability pedagogy, this article offers a semester long activity called a participation menu, which provides a framework for distributing the responsibility of …

An Opportunity For Growth: Co-Constructing The Liberatory Classroom, Lakesha Anderson Ph.D. Sep 2024

An Opportunity For Growth: Co-Constructing The Liberatory Classroom, Lakesha Anderson Ph.D.

Feminist Pedagogy

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted education, necessitating a reevaluation of teaching methodologies and priorities. This critical commentary offers feminist pedagogy as a framework for honoring students' pandemic educational experiences and creating liberatory learning environments. Feminist pedagogy, rooted in the vision of an inclusive and liberatory classroom, challenges normative ways of viewing the world and encourages engaged teaching and learning. My experience as the parent of a high school student with ADHD during the pandemic influenced my teaching practice as a college professor. Through this experience, I learned to treat students more equitably, incorporating new teaching strategies, embracing flexibility, and shifting …

Disability, Belongingness, And Accommodations In Post-Pandemic Learning, Madelaine A. Coffman, Meagan Winkelseth Sep 2024

Disability, Belongingness, And Accommodations In Post-Pandemic Learning, Madelaine A. Coffman, Meagan Winkelseth

Feminist Pedagogy

During the post-pandemic return to campus, lingering expectations for instructor flexibility illuminated the need for classroom cultures that support inclusivity and belongingness for all students. Yet power asymmetries between students and instructors, along with implicit expectations about what it means to be normal, make disclosure of personal disability, precarity, or other concealable stigmatized identities a risky prospect for those who most need accommodation. By taking a dialogical approach to classroom culture and inviting students to identify areas where flexibility is needed, instructors can increase group cohesion and feelings of belongingness, improve student-instructor relationships, and promote non-stigmatized access to accommodations. In …

Collective Access, Collective Liberation: Disability Justice And Abolitionist Pedagogical Worldmaking Toward Post(?)-Pandemic Futures, Hailey N. Otis Sep 2024

Collective Access, Collective Liberation: Disability Justice And Abolitionist Pedagogical Worldmaking Toward Post(?)-Pandemic Futures, Hailey N. Otis

Feminist Pedagogy

This critical commentary poses the question: what if we didn’t return to the “normal” of strict, ableist classrooms policies rooted in the bureaucratic, legalistic framework of “accommodations” and, instead, embraced the Disability Justice principle of collective access? After critiquing the accommodations process used in most higher education settings, I advocate for an approach we might call collective access pedagogy, which works from the fundamental assumptions that (1) all bodies exist on a spectrum of dis/ability and, thus, we all have individual needs based on our unique bodyminds, and (2) that we don’t need the constant threat of a pandemic to …

Expanding The Scope: Multimodal Dimensions In Aphasia Discourse Analysis—Preliminary Findings, Manaswita Dutta, Bijoyaa Mohapatra

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background:

Aphasia, resulting from acquired brain injury, disrupts language processing and usage, significantly impacting individuals’ social communication and life participation. Given the limitations of traditional assessments in capturing the nuanced challenges faced by individuals with aphasia, this study seeks to explore the potential benefits of integrating multimodal communication elements into discourse analysis to better capture narrative proficiency in this population.ObjectiveThis study examined how incorporating multimodal communication elements (e.g., physical gestures, writing, drawing) into discourse analysis may affect the narrative outcomes of persons with aphasia compared to those observed using methods that exclude multimodal considerations.

Methods:

Participants included individuals with chronic …
