“Welcome to Ouachita,” they’ll say. You’ll drive through the parking lot of Francis Crawford Hall or Flippen-Perrin Hall or O.C. Bailey Hall; your car will be loaded down, and perhaps your parents’ cars will be loaded down, too. Or you might be planning to be greeted from the passenger seat of a U-Haul that your family insisted on renting.
But I promise there’s an easier way. I’ll help you make your load a little bit lighter with a list of what not to pack for college:

Purpose Advertising And The Credibility Gap, Tyler Milfeld, Eric Haley
Purpose Advertising And The Credibility Gap, Tyler Milfeld, Eric Haley
Purpose Project
One approach to purpose advertising is brand activism—taking a stand on a sociopolitical issue. This research compares divergent perspectives on whether and how brand activism influences brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Results from three studies, in which real-world brands and messages were used, identify a credibility gap between brands with a reputation for activism (established activist brands) and those without a reputation (emergent activist brands). Findings also reveal how personal issue knowledge moderates the credibility gap. Among other contributions, this research creates a new brand typology in the brand activism arena and empirically demonstrates a more favorable effect for established …

Exploring Social Media And Online Communication Use By Direct-To-Consumer Agricultural Businesses In Upstate New York, Katerina Weingarten, Quisto Settle, Linnea Harvey, Dwayne Cartmell
Journal of Applied Communications
The popularization of social media and an increased interest in local food has led to the need for an online presence of direct-to-consumer agricultural producers. The COVID-19 pandemic quickly pushed the transition from traditional marketing practices to digital marketing practices, further emphasizing the importance of an online presence for small businesses. To better understand the perceptions of direct-to-consumer agricultural businesses, this study sought to understand the current use of social media and online communication and the challenges faced, related to social media and online communication, among these producers. Ten direct-to-consumer agricultural business personnel were interviewed to examine their social media …

Well-developed communications skills are essential to a proficient agricultural workforce. Online instruction via reusable learning modules (RLMs) is one way agricultural science faculty can provide their students with expert communications skills training. Although RLMs have many benefits, their value degrades rapidly if the learner cannot access or use the technology efficiently. Therefore, online instruction must be tested to ensure usability. The purpose of our study was to assess the usability of RLMs developed to bolster the communications skills of students studying in the agricultural sciences and provide guidance for future curricula and online instruction development. We used quantitative and qualitative …

This research is intended to initiate understanding of how obesity in the South persists even though the majority of inhabitants subscribe to a faith that discourages unhealthy lifestyles. Grounded in the Cognitive Dissonance Theory, this study examined Protestant evangelical Christians in the South (N = 11), who participated in semi-structured interviews. The first emergent theme was that, to these Southerners, the purpose of food is for sustenance and survival, as well as for bringing people together. Most participants reported having an average level of knowledge of nutrition and health. Furthermore, participants generally agreed that marketing or educational efforts had little …

The Power Of The Virtual Platform: A Look Into Fandom Interactions Via Twitter (X), Samantha Hacker
Undergraduate Theses
Using social media to communicate has become increasingly popular since the medium was created. Twitter has been a popular breeding ground for fan communities to form social spaces. Parasocial relationship theory, as well as face negotiation theory, tie heavily into the discussion of fandoms and the creation of safe spaces on the platform. How people present themselves online is entirely dependent on the user and their level of comfort on the app. One fandom in particular that utilizes this app the most is the fan base for the seven-member South Korean boy band, BTS, who in reference to the band, …

Research On China’S Open Science Policy System, Wei Yang, Xiwen Liu, Jinxia Huang, Man Xiao, Xinman Zheng, Ruofei Chang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Open science has risen to the global strategic level. The open science policy will provide an accelerator for achieving global sustainable development goals. China’s formulation and support of open access policies and open science infrastructure policies are still insufficient. The practical demand for China’s open science policy comes from the emerging open innovation research scenario, while the long- term demand comes from the construction of an open innovation ecosystem. This study proposes an open science policy system that conforms to the framework of China’s science and technology innovation policy system, and proposes policy action suggestions that adapt to the UNESCO …

To promote economic development, social progress, and scientific and technological innovation, it is necessary to strengthen scientific cooperation and information sharing. Open data has emerged in response and become a seemingly inevitable development in the evolution of digital technology. Open data, however, must be supported by infrastructure composed of physical entities and virtual systems that meet the needs of data applications in many fields. Constructing and strengthening open data infrastructure should therefore be considered important objectives of information technology development. This study analyzes the elements of open data infrastructure and expounds its significant positive role in implementing open science. Based …

It's A Mean, Mean World: Social Media And Mean World Syndrome, Samantha Kemp
University Honors Theses
Born from cultivation theory, which suggests that media has a profound effect on viewers' perceptions of the world around them, Mean World Syndrome is a psychosocial phenomenon that describes increased levels of fear, anxiety, and pessimism, as well as an overall perception of the world as "meaner" than it actually is, as a result of heavy viewership of violence-related mass media. Mean World Syndrome has primarily been associated with television consumption, but a major societal shift towards consumption of social media instead of television over the last two decades necessitates investigation into how social media affects its users. Through an …

Heterotopia As A Site Of Resistance In A Global City: How Informal Practices Can Subvert The State And Finance Capital, Micky Lee
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
David Harvey and Michel Foucault have both theorized the concept “heterotopia” as a site of resistance. In this site, “informal” and mundane activities are enacted to resist measures and practices imposed by the state and finance capital. To Harvey, heterotopia is constituted by acts, affects, and meaning-making among residents in an urban space. To Foucault, heterotopia is formed when the wrong people showing up in the wrong place doing the wrong thing. Both senses of heterotopia threaten spaces that the state designed to maximize capital flows in a global city.
Hong Kong is a good case study because recent crises …

Can The Global City Enable Democratic Autonomy? Re-Reading David Harvey And Saskia Sassen, Micky Lee
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
The global city is imagined to be a space that accommodates flows of people, ideas, cultures and—most importantly—capital. It is also imagined to enjoy a high degree of decision-making autonomy from the nation. However, the rise of nationalism and covid lockdowns have called into question what a global city means when nation-states can stop global flows in and out from a city. Hong Kong is a good case study because the international community has been questioning this former British colony's global status due to overt political control from the Central Chinese government and stringent border control during the pandemic. However, …
