The Effects Of Expectation Violations In The Workplace: Why Do Fresh Graduates And New Employees Leave?, Yingluo Zhu

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022

For years, recent graduates and new employees have been faced with a work environment that is different from their expectations when they first choose a job or enter the workforce. The factors that new employees perceive as violating their expectations in the workplace may cause employees to lose interest in their careers, decrease job satisfaction, lose the momentum of completing work, and even wish to leave their jobs. This study was conducted through a questionnaire and quantitative analysis, applying expectancy violations theory (EVT) to recent graduates and new employers who are preparing or just starting their careers. Both the participants’ …

Poetic Politics: Renewing The Black Jeremiad On The Inaugural Stage, Rachel Johnson Apr 2022

Poetic Politics: Renewing The Black Jeremiad On The Inaugural Stage, Rachel Johnson

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman stunned the United States with her captivating performance of “The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country” during the 2021 inaugural ceremony for President Biden and Vice President Harris. Analyzing this political poem, we contribute to the rhetorical scholarship of inaugural ceremonies and demonstrate how Gorman’s performance renews the tradition of Black jeremiads. Specifically, we argue that Gorman’s performance creates a “double play” on white expectations, thereby crafting a rival version of democratic unity as she poetically envisions a “We, the people” that does not center on white men and is not …

A Discursive Approach To Analyzing The Social Construction Of Exercise During Pregnancy, Savanna Kerstiens Apr 2022

A Discursive Approach To Analyzing The Social Construction Of Exercise During Pregnancy, Savanna Kerstiens

The Qualitative Report

While research has demonstrated that exercise is healthy for pregnant women (Ramirez-Velez et al., 2017), many pregnant women do not meet medical recommendations and hesitate to engage in exercise. This may be related to the dominant discourses circulating in society and popular media. For this study, I selected a sample of top-selling pregnancy books to explore the attitudes, beliefs, and ideas circulating in these texts surrounding exercise during pregnancy. I conducted a discourse analysis to deconstruct the meaning of the language used and the advice given. Throughout the analysis, a postmodern feminist epistemology is employed to consider the implications …
