Scavenger Hunts & Photo Essays: Helping Students See Inequality In The World Around Them Through Project-Based Learning, Emily Cabaniss, Kylie Parrotta

Feminist Pedagogy

This paper outlines two scavenger hunt project-based learning approaches we have used with our students to help them see gender inequality around them and to think sociologically about it. The first assignment asks students to dig deeply into one-gender related issue or inequality that interests them in their immediate surroundings and to create a photo essay that says something about the nature, experience, consequences of, or reaction to that issue or inequality. The second assignment asks students to look broadly at the culture around them and to identify everyday examples of gender inequality by participating in a gender scavenger hunt. …

And, how, if at all, does university rhetoric shape the enactment of identity during the COVID-19 crisis? This paper uses qualitative methods to get rich descriptions of professorial identities allowing research to get at the heart of how changes during the pandemic affected professors’ organizational, personal, professional, and workgroup identities. Overall, this study shows the pandemic encouraged professors to …

Media Suppression In Africa And The Balkans - How Economic Distribution Impacts Freedom Of The Press On An International Level, Lindsey G. Ingraham

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Freedom of intellectual expression and media are human rights that the United Nations argues should be available to all people on Earth. However, we continue to see suppression of the media by various states across the globe. There is plenty of research that examines abuse of human rights, but there is a significant gap in the literature regarding what role economic distribution within a state plays. One of the most common measures of economic dispersion within states is the Gini Coefficient. This places states on a scale from 0, perfect income equality, to 1, perfect income inequality where all of …

Framing Of The Texas Snowstorm On Twitter, Colton S. Kovach Apr 2022

Framing Of The Texas Snowstorm On Twitter, Colton S. Kovach

Honors College Theses

This study investigates Framing Theory as it pertains to Twitter as the modern social sphere for communication and acquisition of news. There isn’t much work examining how the news frames the cause of global climate change on Twitter. This paper aims to study how five notable news publishers of different media political biases communicate through Twitter about the Texas Snowstorm that occurred in February, 2021. Through a content analysis of 119 tweets regarding a climate change induced storm of record-breaking, freezing temperatures; this study reveals the news’s fixation on the effects of the issue instead of the causes.

A Descriptive Analysis Of Sport Nationalism, Digital Media, And Fandom To Launch The Canadian Premier League, Farzan Mirzazadeh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In April 2019, the Canadian Premier League (CPL), a professional domestic soccer league, launched in Canada, making it the first top-tier league in North America to begin operations in the modern digital era. The CPL represents a unique and timely opportunity to examine how a new professional sports league cultivates ties with fan-consumers via sport nationalism, digital media, and fandom. As yet, there are very few academic works on the CPL, and there is also a paucity of scholarly publications on the launch of new professional sports leagues in the 21st century. For this study, two types of qualitative data …

Presidential Agenda Rhetoric In The State Of The Union Address: Obama And Trump, Danielle Goedken

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Previous research has illustrated that presidents will make many promises along the campaign trail and those promises are what build their agenda and hopefully get them elected. Once elected their agenda continues to be built through speeches. Researchers have compiled the campaign promises of previous administrations and tracked the completion of those promises. They have both tracked the completion of promises and good faith attempts at completing promises. In this paper, I analyze good faith attempts at keeping the promise on their agenda through presidential rhetoric in State of the Union Addresses. Presidents speak to Congress and the public on …

The Media, Onu Institute For Civics And Public Policy, Kennedy Aikey, Hailey Trimpey

Critical Questions

The media has a large influence on day-to-day life. The citizenry has become dependent upon media sources to inform them of current events and provide information about issues of importance to their daily lives. Media have evolved quite a bit over time and have become incredibly influential in our political system. For instance, American presidents now have the ability to communicate freely with the public and have direct ties to news media. We can continue to expect to see the growth of the media in both the political world and our daily lives.

A mixed-methods approach was utilized, with a survey (n=32) and interviews (n=3), to examine primary reasons for use, perceived accessibility of interactions, the relationship between SNS use and life satisfaction, and noted societal changes. Most participants reported using Facebook and Instagram, which were primarily used for social interaction, information seeking, and …
