The Relationship Between Role Models, Socioeconomic Mobility Beliefs, And Academic Outcomes, Christian Koeu, Marisol Espinoza Garcia May 2024

The Relationship Between Role Models, Socioeconomic Mobility Beliefs, And Academic Outcomes, Christian Koeu, Marisol Espinoza Garcia

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Objective: This study aims to provide insights into the relationships between role models, socioeconomic mobility beliefs and the education outcomes of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. While previous studies highlight the positive influence of role models on academic and career aspirations, the specific relationship between role models and socioeconomic beliefs remains unexplored. Our study addresses this gap by examining whether the presence of role models relates with more optimistic socioeconomic beliefs and how these beliefs, in turn, affect academic outcomes (academic engagement, academic intentions, and grade point average [GPA]). Additionally, we investigate the influence of role model characteristics to …

“Barbie Is As Much About Fashion As She Is About Culture And Empowerment”: Feminism In Barbie The Movie And Its Postfeminist Marketing, Brooke Ashley Shepherd

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Barbie movie has been celebrated by fans for its feminist narrative. Although the film garnered appreciation from fans across the world, my thesis illustrates that it ultimately serves as a vehicle to promote a product, leading to question its feminist narrative. This mixed method study, which combines feminist textual analysis and feminist political economy analysis, investigates feminism and postfeminism within the Barbie movie and the marketing for the movie. The feminist textual analysis identified both feminist and postfeminist ideologies that are present within the film. The feminist political economy analysis identified the marketing for the Barbie movie as postfeminist. …

Investigating The Potential Of Augmented Reality In Creating A Sense Of Place On College Campuses, Linda White May 2024

Investigating The Potential Of Augmented Reality In Creating A Sense Of Place On College Campuses, Linda White

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This project examines how designing an augmented reality (AR) campus navigation app can improve college students' sense of place and connection with California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). To guide the design of the app, I engaged in qualitative research using a curated campus walk protocol that invited students to walk to their favorite place on campus and record their walk while narrating it.

My analysis reveals the larger patterns that students use to select favorite places and favorite routes to those places, as well as how space navigation may lead to the formation of a sense of connection with …

Make America(N Cinema) Great Again: The Rhetoric Of Nostalgia In Trump Era Cinematic Multiplicities, Courtney J. Dreyer May 2024

Make America(N Cinema) Great Again: The Rhetoric Of Nostalgia In Trump Era Cinematic Multiplicities, Courtney J. Dreyer

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation investigates the rhetoric of nostalgia in politics and popular Hollywood cinema during the Trump era. I argue that MAGA Cinema, the contemporary trend of reboots, remakes, and sequels related to properties from the late 1970s to early 1990s, both respond to and strengthen attachments to an imagined version of the 1980s. However, this illusory golden age more closely reflects the world as depicted in the cinema of the 1980s rather than the reality of American in the years of Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Through a close analysis of David Gordon Green’s Halloween Reboot series, Top Gun: Maverick, and …

The Good White Guise: Rhetorical (Re)Constructions Of White Allies On U.S. Television, Dakota J. Sandras May 2024

The Good White Guise: Rhetorical (Re)Constructions Of White Allies On U.S. Television, Dakota J. Sandras

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

In this dissertation, I observe how white allyship has been (re)constructed in media by analyzing its representations on mainstream television amidst peak moments of racial reckoning in the United States. In light of heightened demands for antiracist solidarity, I interrogate how such popular texts contribute to gaps between the theory and practice of allyship within the white imaginary. By attending to episodic samples from three distinct genres of American television, I dissect how various interactions and characters coded to signify white allyship rhetorically function to create meaning regarding its contested im/possibilities in both media and in the real world. In …

Social Media And The Court: Exploring Impacts, Challenges, And Legal Considerations In The Digital Age, Jordan Gruce May 2024

Social Media And The Court: Exploring Impacts, Challenges, And Legal Considerations In The Digital Age, Jordan Gruce

University Honors College

Social media has become a greater concern to the judicial system as mistrials and overturned convictions continue to take place because of internet-related juror misconduct. This paper sought to understand the implications of social media on the criminal justice system through its use by jurors, judges, attorneys, and individuals outside of the courtroom. It was found that information regarding criminal cases presented online is often negative, biased, and sensationalized, and frequently contains prejudicial evidence that can undermine a defendant’s right to a fair trial by an impartial jury. Jurors may commit misconduct by researching a case online or by communicating …

That Way: An Examination Of Male Relationships In Film During The Hays Code, Jane Knudsen May 2024

That Way: An Examination Of Male Relationships In Film During The Hays Code, Jane Knudsen

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The Hays Code (1934-1968) influenced the construct of United States masculinity and the discourse surrounding masculine presentation between the 1920s to the 1960s. The Hays Code and World War II affected the culture surrounding male/male relationships in the United States. Previous research done by David Lugowski (1999) and Jeffrey Suzik (1999) shows that both World Wars led to crises of masculinity in which the hegemonic ideal of masculinity was restructured to establish men as providers and warriors, and Code-era films reflected the discourse. To understand the gender roles in the 20th century, I analyzed the Hays code, male bonds, …

Building Broski Nation: How Brittany Broski Fosters Parasocial Relationships Through Tiktok, Maureen Corrigan

Honors College Theses

This study delves into the concept of parasocial relationships (PSR) in the 21st century, specifically how social media influencers employ parasocial interaction (PSI) tactics on TikTok to form these relationships. This study explores the affordances of direct contact that TikTok allows for and its influence on PSR/PSI. This was able to be done by using popular TikTok influencer Brittany Broski’s “spam” account as a case study. I coded specific PSI tactics and tracked how these tactics correlated to the engagement metrics of her videos. As well as, content analyzing four specific organic and sponsored posts to see how these tactics …

Spiking Engagement: Analyzing Social Media Tactics And Fan Interaction In The Omaha Supernovas, Anne Thomas May 2024

Spiking Engagement: Analyzing Social Media Tactics And Fan Interaction In The Omaha Supernovas, Anne Thomas

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The available engagement of social media for firms and their target market is unmatched. Rather than a one-way communication, it is an open channel. Potential customers can share their thoughts and feelings on the firms’ products and services, and firms can connect with their customers and create brand loyalty. This opens opportunities for marketers to look at new ways and strategies to connect with their customers. This is the same for professional sports teams. Just like a traditional firm, professional sports teams rely on being able to connect with and sell to their target market.

The newly established Omaha Supernovas …

The interpretative frameworks of simulation and agency are central to this analysis, and they are applied to the history-based video game Europa Universalis IV as a case study of how video games facilitate rich and rewarding historical sensibilities that deepen the connection between past and present, a long-standing goal of professional and popular historians. The study …

Will Consumer-Generated Reviews And Electronic Word-Of-Mouth Communications Affect Subjective Norm Perceptions, Attitudes Toward Social Commerce, And Social Shopping Intensions Among Gen Z Consumers?, Adebusola Azeezat Adewale

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Social commerce has become a global phenomenon in recent years. Its convenience and accessibility have revolutionized how consumers shop and interact with brands and merchants. Gen Z consumers make up the majority (55.5%) of social buyers, and they are likely to be influenced by consumer-generated reviews (CGRs) and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on social media. This thesis draws on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and employs a quantitative online questionnaire to determine whether CGRs and eWOM influence subjective norms (SN) perceptions, attitudes toward social commerce (ASC), and social shopping intention (SSI) of Gen Z consumers. The theoretical framework also included …

Sexual Exploitation: The Crisis And Eradicative Solution, Tonnie Adams Bracey

Student Capstone Projects

French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” I find this to be true in our current era of the digital age. Although technology has gifted a newly improved and vast method of making worldwide connections and broadening our perceptions and views, a change in how we communicate has conveniently presented itself, but the historic pattern of how we handle these new advancements have indeed stayed the same.
Smart phones are a mainstream vessel employing the world with a plethora of information while giving all sorts of people access to individual’s lives …

Division-I Student-Athletes’ Socialization Out Of Sports: The Role Of Exit Circumstances And Interpersonal Support On Wellness, Hannah J. Gertz

All Theses

Student-athletes who compete at the Division-I level typically receive much public exposure and attention during their athletic careers, often leading them to form a high athletic identity. As such, they often need help transitioning away from the athletic competitor role following their retirement. This process, known as socialization out of sport (SOS), is characterized by a loss of purpose and identity for student-athletes and can harm their overall well-being and quality of life. Establishing the empirical associations between SOS's proposed characteristics/features (e.g., the impetus of SOS, educational status, athletic identity, and sense of closure) and former student-athletes’ subsequent life experiences …

The Relationship Between Electronic Media And Hearing Loss On Language Development: A Pilot Study, Sarah Marie Mahnesmith

Communication Science and Disorders Honors Theses

Researchers agree that one of the methods by which infants learn spoken language through caregivers’ use of infant directed speech. However, the quantity and quality of language during caregiver-infant interactions may decrease in the presence of electronic media, and media may not only limit language input but create a more complex listening situation for children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between electronic media exposure in the homes of children with SNHL, as compared to peers with normal hearing (NH), and later language skills. This study will provide novel information on …

Investigating The Relationships Between Study Abroad, Language Immersion, And Intercultural Sensitivity, Isabella Bea Battistoni

Communication Science and Disorders Honors Theses

An increasing number of students are choosing to study abroad. Once only an experience for those learning a language (University of Delaware, 2024), international education has become much more accessible for students of all disciplines. When choosing a program, students face a decision in choosing the level of language immersion and learning the trip will offer. This study examined the impact of different levels of language immersion on a student's intercultural sensitivity following a short-term study abroad trip. Intercultural sensitivity, defined as, “an individual's ability to develop emotion towards understanding and appreciating cultural differences that promotes appropriate and effective behavior …

The Impact Of Website Interface Micro Animations On User Perceptions Of Trust, Credibility, And Design Quality, Lydia F. Burge

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects

Animation is increasingly considered an important aspect of quality website design. Although research indicates the positive effects well-crafted visual design can have on user perceptions of a website, there is little research investigating animation’s effects on user perceptions. Adopting an experimental design, this study examines the effects of interface micro animation on users’ perceptions of design quality, credibility, and trust in a website. After viewing a series of identical hypothetical nonprofit organization websites, participants were divided into two groups for the last website. One group was presented with a website incorporating interface micro animations and the other with the same …

Groomer Discourse: A Transgender-Sensitive Critical Discourse Analysis Of Queerphobic Hate Speech On Twitter, William Evans

Honors Theses

In recent times, online internet hate speech has received more and more attention due to its adaptive and mutative nature, emerging not in a vacuum but instead sprouting from the seeds of social inequity. A specific form of queerphobic hate speech known as groomer discourse or predation libel has taken new form in online spaces. This recent development, targeted almost exclusively towards the queer community and their allies, is uniquely situated at the intersection of transgender rights and sexual education in the United States. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, this study expands Spallaccia’s gender-sensitive critical discourse analysis (CDA) into a …

Engaging For A Cause: How Nonprofits Can Leverage Theory To Maximize Video Engagement On Instagram., Aiko A. A. A. Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Video is the second-richest form of media, conveying both verbal and nonverbal cues to viewers (Hasim et al., 2020). When coupled with the accessibility of social media, videos can spark consumer interest and convert neutral parties to brand-supporters (Alamäki et al., 2019; Tseng & Wei, 2020). This study aimed to investigate the effects of using Aristotle’s persuasive appeals, Berger’s STEPPS, and Monroe’s Motivated Sequence on the success of nonprofit organizations’ social media videos, measured in engagement metrics (likes and comments). Through a content analysis of 50 videos posted to Instagram by randomly selected nonprofit organizations, this study found that pathos …
