Bodies For Catastrophe: A Montage Study Of Palestinian Digital Labor, Francisco Ramos Sep 2024

Bodies For Catastrophe: A Montage Study Of Palestinian Digital Labor, Francisco Ramos

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis investigates Palestinian digital labor through the method of montage. Digital labor, understood as bodily activity transfigured by digital machines into exploitable information, is examined within the context of Israeli surveillance technologies used against Palestinians. The study critically explores the dual political functions of these technologies: as tools of settler-colonial domination aiming to dispossess Palestinians, and as neoliberal mechanisms seeking to profit from the surveillance of Palestinian bodies. The second half of the thesis turns to the ways Palestinians engage with such technologies and unsettle the economic and colonial logics embedded in them.

The research is structured nonlinearly using …

Challenging Beliefs: Examining The Efficacy Of Corrections For Conspiratorial And Partisan Misinformation, Ava Zwolinski Sep 2024

Challenging Beliefs: Examining The Efficacy Of Corrections For Conspiratorial And Partisan Misinformation, Ava Zwolinski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The threat of misinformation is widely acknowledged among researchers and laypeople (NORC, 2021). When misinformation coalesces with conspiracy theories, the repercussions can be especially dangerous, sometimes even fatal. Events such as the January 6th insurrection and the Buffalo Tops Supermarket shooting were both, in part, inspired by misleading information and conspiracy theories (Burke, 2022; Dawsey, 2023). While misinformation involving conspiracy theories is recognized as possibly posing a greater threat to correction efforts (Lewandowsky, 2021a), no study has yet experimentally manipulated the presence or absence of conspiratorial elements within misinformation. This dissertation explores whether conspiratorial misinformation is more difficult to correct …

The Political Economy Of Knowledge: Navigating Scientometric Enthusiasm Amidst Political And Economic Forces Shaping The Production And Dissemination Of Scientific Knowledge, Maria Cernat

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

While we witness heightened enthusiasm in certain peripheral areas of scientific production regarding scientometric standards, there are increasingly pressing issues concerning how the ideal of objective and rational science is being called into question. In this article, I contrast the enthusiasm for the "prestige" of top-tier journals with the increasingly urgent problems related to the lack of independence of researchers and scientific research itself in a world dominated by security institutions and corporations. While many authors rush to blame postmodernists for the lack of trust in science, recent studies in the history of science reveal an increased role of security …

Despite the advancement in secondary cardiovascular prevention strategies for post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients, the development of new drugs addressing dyslipidemia and the personalization of dual antiplatelet therapies (DAPT), these patients continue to suffer a significant incidence of recurrent ischemic events. Therefore, novel targets that can be tackled to reduce cardiovascular risk are needed to improve the outcome of this very high-risk population. The role of chronic inflammation and inflammasome in the development and progression of atherosclerosis has been broadly investigated in patients with established coronary artery disease (CAD) and recent randomized trials have highlighted the possibility to manage these …

Principal Agency 50 Years After The Lau Decision: Building And Sustaining Bilingual Education Programs For Asian Languages, Kevin M. Wong, Zhongfeng Tian

Education Division Scholarship

This study examined how three champion principals of Asian language dual language bilingual education (DLBE) programs—Cantonese, Korean, and Mandarin—in California have navigated the oscillating language-in-education policies after the Lau decision. We explored principals' various roles through a lens of agency in a social justice leadership framework, specifically considering the opportunities and challenges for agentive leadership from three different phases: foregrounding and engaging, planning and implementing, and evaluating and sustaining. Why I Think Linkedin Is Age Neutral And How It Bridges Generational Gaps, Essraa Nawar Aug 2024

Why I Think Linkedin Is Age Neutral And How It Bridges Generational Gaps, Essraa Nawar

Library Articles and Research

"Earlier this morning, during a lively conversation with my Information Gone Wild podcast co-hosts— Maurice Coleman , Paul Signorelli , our marketing consultant, Abbie Fentress Swanson —we brainstormed strategies to better market our newly launched series. As we debated which platforms could effectively reach our diverse audience, I suggested focusing more on LinkedIn. My reasoning? LinkedIn is one of the few digital spaces that feels genuinely 'age-neutral.' Unlike platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, or TikTok, where generational lines are sharply drawn, LinkedIn is where people of all ages—from my 19- and 21-year-old sons who (shockingly) like my posts there, to my …

Archiving The Ephemeral In Digital Public Space: Using Speculative Design To Consider Collaborative Fan Play In The Metaverse, Naomi Jacobs

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Looking at fan activity through the lens of play, this paper considers the archiving opportunities and challenges posed by new technology for playful ephemeral fan co-creation in multiplatform digital contexts. To examine this, the paper takes fan-created alternate reality games (ARGs) as a particular example of such archiving challenges. It first describes a real example of such a game, ‘Blow the Man Down’ before introducing speculative design as a method to consider a …
