Black, Gay, And Unapologetic: How Lil Nas X Is Bringing The Out Group In, Julianne Stella Swope

Student Research Submissions

Lil Nas X is a gay, Black artist who is succeeding across multiple genres. His first number one hit was a mix of country and trap, including elements of black culture. The second was a mix of hip hop and pop, showcasing elements of queer culture. Lil Nas X is a special case study because he is a Black queer man succeeding in the mainstream. Using ideological criticism I identify that Black pride and gay pride are driving him in his work and public persona. His success pushes against dominant ideologies and forces people who consume mainstream content to acknowledge …

The Reckoning That Never Happened, Katherine Seltzer May 2021

The Reckoning That Never Happened, Katherine Seltzer

Student Research Submissions

Five years after the UMW men’s rugby team was suspended for a violent and misogynistic chant, I am writing about whether the school has fully reckoned with the rugby team’s culture of sexual hostility. The school has mandated sexual harassment training for all athletes, hired a Title IX expert, and settled a lawsuit with Feminists United Club, which sued the school in 2015 for failing to protect members from more than 700 harassing messages over the anonymous app Yik Yak. The club was met with violent rape and death threats following their criticism of the rugby team’s chant. But, as …

A Content Analysis Of Political Discourse On Tiktok, Devin Carson May 2021

A Content Analysis Of Political Discourse On Tiktok, Devin Carson

Student Research Submissions

There is a gap in research about political discourse taking place on the social media platform TikTok. Traditionally, the public saw this platform as trivial and less important than other platforms because of its young user base. With the increase of political videos on this platform within the past few years, scholars are now beginning to observe this platform more seriously. This study aims to recognize how TikTok influences political discourse. A content analysis examined 500 videos under the hashtags, “politics” (10.0 B views), “conservative” (6.9 B views), “republican” (7.0 B views), “Trump” (7.2 B views) “democrat” (4.2 B views) …

Digital Journalism Within The Framework Of Higher Education Public Relations: A Case Study And Manual For Creating Online Feature Stories To Engage Prospective Students, Hunter Desimone

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Higher education institutions (HEI) are facing increasing competition for student enrollment. Studies indicate that websites are now the main source of a prospective student’s information-gathering process, but little research has been done on how higher education institutions can operationalize their websites as functions of public relations to persuade prospective students to apply. This project investigates how concepts of digital journalism can be used to create online feature stories that engage prospective students. A case study was conducted that included an examination of digital journalism literature, an analysis of digital journalism and public relations textbooks, and a content analysis of college …

Catfish: The Tv Show: A Rhetorical Criticism, Victoria Grant May 2021

Catfish: The Tv Show: A Rhetorical Criticism, Victoria Grant

Student Research Submissions

In this research paper I articulate three common themes and motives in the popular MTV show Catfish: The TV Show. By conducting a rhetorical criticism on the show, I employ the research question, "What are some emerging themes and motives demonstrated in different episodes of Catfish?" In this paper, I uncover themes which reveal anxieties about digital technology, human vulnerability, and the convention that 'the reveal' transcends reality TV and human connection. I work towards connecting these themes across three specific episodes of the show Catfish and I engage in how the online phenomena of 'catfishing' is still …

Virtual Worlds: Social Interactions Among Online Gamers Through Voice Chat, Omar Bradley Ictech Ii May 2021

Virtual Worlds: Social Interactions Among Online Gamers Through Voice Chat, Omar Bradley Ictech Ii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Online gaming scholarship has rarely focused on the micro sociological aspects of virtual worlds as much of the research on online games is undertaken by psychologists and scholars in other fields. When a sociological lens is employed in analyzing social interactions that occur in virtual worlds, new understandings of social phenomena in virtual worlds can come to light. My research draws upon multiple sociological theories to make sense of data collect via in-depth interviews and participant observations in an attempt to understand how voice chat influences relationship formation and maintenance, gender relations among online gamers, and how online gamers use …

The Houston Astros' Cheating Scandal: A Case Study On Crisis Communication In Sports, Wendy Edouard May 2021

The Houston Astros' Cheating Scandal: A Case Study On Crisis Communication In Sports, Wendy Edouard

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In January 2020, the Houston Astros organization was accused of cheating during the 2017 and 2018 baseball seasons. In 2017, the Astros had also won the World Series, thereby offsetting a sports scandal which dominated media coverage for several months. Owner of the Houston Astros, Jim Crane and his players released a statement to the press, a month after the investigation was concluded by the Major League Baseball organization. The investigation concluded that the Astros, in fact, had been stealing pitching signs from opposing teams and using technology to communicate signs to their pitcher. Crane’s response (relying primarily on shift …

Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto May 2021

Effects Of Message Frame And Cultural Orientations On Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors, Mika Hashimoto

Communication ETDs

This study aimed to explore effective message strategies to promote COVID-19 prevention behaviors among college students. Due to the fewer symptoms and lessened impact of COVID-19 in this population, young adults tend to have low perceived risk that results in low engagement in preventive behaviors. Also, some people may hold beliefs or values that are contrary to preventive behaviors. Thus, applying message framing theory, this study tested the effects of perceived risk and cultural orientation on adherence to prevention behaviors. The results showed that perceived risk and cultural orientation were associated with intention to maintain physical distance and wearing a …

advantage of the influencer marketing strategy to advertise their products. Influencer marketing, defined generally, is a form of social media marketing with the integration of product placement by people with large social followings. Propaganda Or Persuasion: A Multisite Case Study Analysis Of The Impact Of Museum Communications On American Public Trust, Devon Anna Mancini May 2021

Propaganda Or Persuasion: A Multisite Case Study Analysis Of The Impact Of Museum Communications On American Public Trust, Devon Anna Mancini

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

According to the Edelman Trust Barometer (2021), public trust in information sources has drastically decreased in America, except for museums. Since museums have historically spread propaganda through their communications, this multisite case study analysis of three American museums, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Creation Museum, investigated how museum propaganda impacts public trust. After examining Twitter posts and responses to the three cases, findings showed that even when museums did not intentionally spread propaganda, audience interpretations still led to a fracturing of trust. Recommendations for the field were …

Learning Readiness As A Predictor Of Academic Resilience In Online Learning During School From Home, Maulana Rezi Ramadhana, Assas Putra, Twin Agus Pramonojati, Rizca Haqqu, Pradipta Dirgantara, Oki Achmad Ismail, Dimas Satrio Wijaksono

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Learning readiness is considered as a supporting factor in academic resilience. Since the situation of school closure and learning from home due to the COVID-19 pandemics, there have been changes in learning methods that require students to readily use online learning. Unfortunately, students' readiness in online learning has not been widely discussed in terms of its effect on the student’s academic resilience. The purpose of this study was to provide information on whether there was a significant relationship between online learning readiness and students' academic resilience during the school-from-home period. Participants in this study consisted of 1.681 students from five …

Civil Religion And The Second Amendment, Shivaun Corry May 2021

Civil Religion And The Second Amendment, Shivaun Corry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American approach to legal hermeneutics emerged from the covenant theology of the Puritans. American civil religion understands the Constitution to be based in natural laws: a secularized conception of God-given rights. To change the text would collapse the epistemological framework of the nation. When a nation sees its constitution as a sacred text, then the answer to contemporary problems cannot be to change that text; rather, it must be to return to the text with an even more fundamentalist hermeneutic. Both gun rights advocate Charlton Heston, and gun control advocate Barak Obama, argued their cases using a fundamentalist hermeneutic, …

You Are Not Welcome Here: Sloterdijk’S Posthumanism And The Rhetoric Of Hostile Urban Architecture And Design, Brandon William Aungst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation brings together three scholarship areas: rhetorical theory and analysis, hostile urban architecture and design, and Sloterdijk’s version of posthumanism. I synthesize these complementary areas to address the following questions: How do architecture and design contribute to the rhetorical meaning-making of being human and facilitate the communication of that meaning to others? How do different types of architecture and design produce the material contexts for conceptualizing what humanness means and contribute to the development of fore-structures for interpreting and communicating that humanness (e.g., hostile architecture and barbed wire)? How can we conceptualize various types of architecture and design, or …

Greta Thunberg's Disruptions: How Rhetoric Breaks Trained Incapacities To Climate Change, Mackenzie Peacock May 2021

Greta Thunberg's Disruptions: How Rhetoric Breaks Trained Incapacities To Climate Change, Mackenzie Peacock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After her impactful speech at the United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit in 2019, Greta Thunberg’s performance set the stage for her generation and children as the central actors for the current climate justice Movement. Although Thunberg’s activism and global youth involvement in environmental politics were prominent prior to this speech, there is a need to understand the rhetoric behind Thunberg’s performance in “The World is Waking Up.” Considering her global impact as a young activist, the following thesis is a critical, rhetorical analysis of her UN speech. I examine Thunberg’s rhetoric in this speech and interpret how it produces …
