The Economic Development Of The South Union Shaker Colony 1807-1861, John M. Keith Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, commonly called Shakers, are a most unique communistic group in American history. Their society had an economic as well as a religious base. Because of this entwining relationship, the Shakers outlived all other communistic societies in the United States.

From the beginning the Shakers placed great emphasis on the economic aspects of their communal society and this emphasis played a paramount role in many of their major decisions. In effect their theory was “Mine is thine and thine is mine.” Taking their beliefs from this statement, together with the preaching of …

Water As A Factor In Industrial Location With Special Reference To Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of The United States, Dale W. Berry

Economics ETDs

From chapter one

During the past several years a lively and growing interest in water resources has developed in the United states. With the recognition that freshwater is, in fact, scarce, and no longer a free good, economists, geographers, engineers, planners, administrators, and others in all levels of the governmental and private spheres have shown a new or renewed interest in problems associated with water use. Alarming statements about actual impeding water shortages have caused particular concern with industrial water use in its aerial distribution. However, despite the importance of the problem, specifically in arid and semi-arid areas, only scattered …

The Element Of Government In Determining Economic Freedom, Joseph R. Wakeen May 1965

The Element Of Government In Determining Economic Freedom, Joseph R. Wakeen

Economics ETDs

It has been said with persistent regularity that the first step to solving a problem or clarifying a perplexity is to recognize it. Of course, this is only a first step but a necessary one. We must also consider the problem in the light of the objectives we wish to attain, as well as the methods we are using to attain them. This thesis deals with a question that has been embodied in the literature for some time, indeed, since the inception of the science. It has to do with government involvement in the economic sphere and the effects of …

What follows is a brief discussion of the development of the characteristics of the corporate organization from its origin to its implementation in early Utah.

Quickening the rate of economic growth and the conquest of poverty are the primary expressed objects of public policy in the underdeveloped countries of the world. In the new countries, particularly in Africa and Asia which have recently become independent, it was necessary to start almost from scratch in the construction of an advanced economy.
