Trends In Social Thinking, 1910-1935, Mary Elizabeth Williams May 1937

Trends In Social Thinking, 1910-1935, Mary Elizabeth Williams

Master's Theses

This topic has been chosen because of an interest in the economic and social conditions of the present day and a desire to know just how much the changing events of the world’s history during the past twenty five years have affected our attitudes toward certain economic problems. In order to do this, five fields of interest were chosen. These are, banking practice and legislation, agriculture, public finance, labor problems and trusts. I have attempted to draw some conclusions which will show a definite trend toward certain attitudes of thinking of the present day which are different from the attitudes …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study presents a somewhat connected narrative of the attitudes and contributions of organized labor to education prior to 1860. It has a twofold purpose: first, it is concerned with a consideration of the psychological, economic, social and political background which provided and shaped the determining factors of organized labor's earlier educational attitudes and contributions; and second, with an investigation for evidences as to the nature, extent and significance of these attitudes and contributions in evaluating labor's part in establishing our system of free public school education.

2. To make a study of the student worker, considering his qualifications, his duties, his age, and his salary; to discover the number of student workers placed on Southern state college campuses by the Baptist, Episcopalian, Methodist and Presbyterian denominations; and to list as accurately as possible these student workers, indicating whether they are full-time or part-time workers, stating the college or university …

The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson May 1936

The Trend Of Financing Urban Property, Irvine F. Wilson

Master's Theses

This thesis is intended as a survey of trends in financing urban property. Urban property, as construed by this study, includes all incorporated cities, towns, and villages. This interpretation is used firstly in order that a complete analysis might be pictured and secondly, because investments in property are not necessarily restricted because of the number of inhabitants in a particular town or city. The report abounds not only in graphs and curves which indicate movements, but also explanatory material and tabulated statistics when deemed necessary to present a complete authentic picture.

Many studies have been made concerning his learning behavior, factors affecting his eating habits, his emotions, metor skills, intellectual development, and social behavior.

An Analysis Of Crop Production In South Dakota By Types Of Farming Areas, Warren Richards Bailey Jan 1936

An Analysis Of Crop Production In South Dakota By Types Of Farming Areas, Warren Richards Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Farmers choose the crops they grow for two principal users; namely, for feed production or for cash income, or for both feed and cash income. It is true that some crops are grown for cover-crops, soil building, weed competition and a multitude of other miscellaneous purposes, many of them of equal or greater importance in the individual case than the two uses of crops which are the basis for this analysis. Crop production in South Dakota has been discussed since the first records of yields were available. the usual unit for production was the legal bushel of a specified weight.

Index Numbers Of South Dakota Farm Prices, Leslie Max Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last generation, index numbers have gradually gone into general use among economists, statisticians, and business men. In order to furnish a comparable background for the presentation of these results it was found desirable (1) …

Trends In Kansas State Governmental Revenue Receipts And Expenditure, 1880-1934, Vernon Thomas Clover Aug 1935

Trends In Kansas State Governmental Revenue Receipts And Expenditure, 1880-1934, Vernon Thomas Clover

Master's Theses

The main purpose of this thesis is to point out the significant trends in governmental revenue receipts and expenditures in Kansas during the period from 1880 through 1934. Especial attention is given to the state government as opposed to the local governments. The discussion in connection with the latter is confined to property tax levies, expenditures for roads, streets and bridges, and for education. Few new or startling facts are presented. The trends shown however, are based upon definite statistics and therefore give the conclusions that are drawn the element of accuracy which has usually been lacking in the popular …

Ua94/6/1 The Economic & Social Status Of Boyce Rural Community, Thelma Glasscock

Student/Alumni Personal Papers

A paper written for Economics 310 at Western Kentucky Teachers College.

My aim in this study is to present in a brief manner the economic and social status of the community or school district in which I live. My data have been collected through observations over a period of twenty years and contacts made with the people of this district, through conferences with those much older than I, from records and reports of others, and a house to house canvass of the district. The pictures, illustrating certain features, were made during the spring of 1935.

A Study Of Certain Economic Factors Involved In The Organization And Management Of Poultry Farms In Utah, Robert L. Wrigley Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the organization and management of poultry farming many problems arise which call for a solution. Among such problems are the following: The amount of floor space per hen which will prove the most economical, the value of electric lights in poultry houses, amount of labor which can be profitably invested in a poultry flock, and the amount of feed which can be economically fed to poultry.

There are many influences which determine poultry profits that cannot be controlled directly, but the factors mentioned here are largely within the control of the poultryman. He should, therefore, direct them as far …

A Study Of Inequalities In Farm Real Estate Assessment In South Dakota, Norman Victor Strand Jan 1935

A Study Of Inequalities In Farm Real Estate Assessment In South Dakota, Norman Victor Strand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the few beneficial effects of the recent business depression has been the focusing of an increased amount of attention on taxes and tax systems. Research agencies, tax commissions and citizens tax organizations have given the matter thorough study. As a result of increased knowledge of the widespread havoc caused by excessive taxation of general property, many states which formerly obtained most of their revenue from general property taxes, have resorted to supplementary forms of taxation, such as income taxes, sales taxes, corporation taxes, and others. It is beyond the scope of this paper to consider these sources of …

A Study Of Economic Activity In South Dakota, Glenn Aldrich Scott Jan 1935

A Study Of Economic Activity In South Dakota, Glenn Aldrich Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is undoubtedly true that now, more than at any time previously, statistical analyses hold an increasingly important place in the business world. It is decidedly important to be the man in business, whether he be farmer, manufacturer, or retailer, that he knows what the trend of business has been in the past, and what the current trend is, so that he may anticipate changes which statistical analyses show are taking place in his particular phase of business or industry. As it applies to smaller units of business, so does it apply to the whole business structure. This study has …

Trends Of Municipal Expenditures In Second Class Cities Of Kentucky From 1926 To 1933, Howard Taylor Aug 1934

Trends Of Municipal Expenditures In Second Class Cities Of Kentucky From 1926 To 1933, Howard Taylor

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The increase of city expenditures was noticeable for the past two decades. During the depression there arose a greater demand on the part of both tax payers and city officials for some information concerning the costs of city government, what was responsible for the increase, for what municipal funds were expended, and where the cost of city government was headed.

The question of how expenditures in certain departments compared with those of other departments was also a pertinent one. Education suffered an enormous reduction as compared to what had been spent from 1928 to 1932. There was a wide-spread belief …

Where Are We Going? — An Impartial Review Of Nra, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Few if any matters have received the attention of more speakers and writers than the National Recovery Act. Virtually each has gone into the subject from a different angle and each wound up at a different place. No exception to this rule was displayed when Dr. Robert E. McConnell, president Washington State Normal School, Ellensburg, said the following at the annual meeting...

The Airplane As A Factor In Modern Transportation, Robert Fenix

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper was planned with the object of covering the history and development of air transportation from its incep- tion to the present time. The activities of the Wright Brothers began about 1900 and in 1909 they sold the Wright Flyer" to the United States Govern- ment. The development of pre-war and wartime airplanes is next taken up.

The World War was significant in airplane history. During this period airplanes were improved tremendously, because of …

Taxes have been in the past and undoubtedly will continue to be in the future of governments and peoples. That the statement is true in South Dakota and in Brookings County we will agree. In this state the property tax , or general tax, has been the major source of revenue. This property tax is the subject of the this study. The purpose of the investigation has been to discover the trends of property taxes …

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely Jan 1934

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is one of the newest of the important agricultural states. In 1900, many parts of South Dakota were still in the process of being settled. The increase in the amount of land in crops continued without interruption until the time of the World War. We then find a greater demand for farm products than ever before. Inspired by the double incentive of high prices and helping to win the war, South Dakota and United States agriculture had expanded to unprecedented levels by 1920.

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith Jan 1934

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was planned as a preliminary survey of the short time credit problems of South Dakota. Although considerable information had been gathered concerning long time credits, no investigation had been made in the short time credit field; consequently the study of short time credits was regarded merely as an extension of the previous field of study. An investigation in this field was expected to be valuable since the efficient operation of the farming business depends in many instances on ready access to a cheap supply of short time credit.

Early State Banking In Kentucky, 1802-1830, S. Beverly Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is the purpose of this study to examine the early state-chartered banks of Kentucky: their creation, career and dissolution. To do this it will be necessary to survey the period of Kentucky history from 1802, when the Kentucky Insurance Company was awarded its charter by the Legislature and granted banking powers, to about 1830, when all previously chartered state banks had become non-existent or were in the process of liquidation. Throughout this period it will be necessary to notice the major political trends, events and problems. These, however, will be of secondary importance, and attention primarily will be centered …

Working Women In Bangor, Eleanor George Dow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of labor conditions, especially in relation to women, is a comparatively untouched field in the state of Maine.

In the past few decades the financial contribution to the family by women working outside the home has steadily increased. Therefore, the employment of women constitutes a problem of economic importance.

The employed woman is a problem which is of vital interest to society, for it is a conceded fact that social progress depends much on the woman, as the mother of future generations. The conditions under which the employed woman works, the occupations which she enters, and the earnings …
