Islam And The British Administration In Northern Nigeria, Peggy Blumberg Jan 1961

Islam And The British Administration In Northern Nigeria, Peggy Blumberg

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper offers a case study in acculturation, the process by which one culture adopts traits of another after prolonged contact. This study seeks to show how the British administration in Northern Nigeria inadvertently hastened the process of conversion of the pagans to Islam. Much of the area was already nominally Muslim when conquered by the Muslim Fulani early in the 19th century. The suzerainty of Islamic rulers encouraged further conversion. By strengthening these rulers and their Islamic courts, the British system of indirect rule established in 1900 gave the pagans positive incentives to convert. Many of the pre-Fulani Muslims …

Engineer Intelligence Guide 33, Preparation Of Terrain Diagrams, June 1960, Robert Bolin , Depositor

This document was issued by the Chief of Staff to prescribe relationships between different officers in the Army staff. Particularly, it was intended to “prescribe relationships between the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence (ACSI), the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics (DCSLOG), and the technical Services in the field of intelligence activities.” This is essentially the same as the 1958 version.

It was published as part of an attempt to solve an ongoing organizational problem: how to coordinate the intelligence activities of the US government.

In the 1950s, military intelligence was decentralized. There was no national-level military intelligence agency. …

An Inquiry Into The Influences Of American Democracy On The Arab Middle East, 1819-1958, Edward A. Raleigh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present en analysis of the American contributions to democracy in the Arab Middle East. Research will be confined, for the most part, to the American impact upon the United Arab Republic, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Iraq between 1819 and 1958. Yemen, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the Trucial Sheikdoms will be treated incidentally because the American impact was so slight as to be virtually non-existent; while Turkey, although not an Arab country, will be studied in some detail in the chapter on Education primarily because of Robert College and the part it played …
