The author undertook two distinct journeys. The first was to the Indian frontier states of the Hindu Kush, the Pamirs, and the Oxus, and the second was to Afghanistan. The distance covered on horseback or on foot in the two was just short of 1800 miles. In Afghanistan the Amir arranged horses for him along the route. The book is a description of the author's travel experiences.

He encountered difficulties on moving and feeding a few thousand men in the desert of Beluchistan and the Afghan mountains.
