Library Users’ Attitudes Towards Virtual Library And Information Services In Ugandan Public And Private Universities, Lydia Namugera, Joyce Bukirwa, Constant Okello-Obura
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Technological advancements, innovations, research, changing user needs, and online education have significantly affected traditional libraries. The 21st-century has engendered library users who seldom visit physical libraries but rely on alternative sources of information like Google from their convenient locations. This implies that for libraries to effectively adapt to the technologically driven academic landscape, adoption of Virtual Library and Information Services (VLIS) is the most feasible approach for them to fulfill their mandate of information provision. However, despite the numerous benefits VLIS offers, such as timely and convenient access to a wide range of current electronic resources, its adoption, implementation and …
Digital Libraries As Digital Third Place: Virtual Programming In The Age Of Loneliness, Stephen Craig Finlay, Jenny Haddon
Digital Libraries As Digital Third Place: Virtual Programming In The Age Of Loneliness, Stephen Craig Finlay, Jenny Haddon
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Brick-and-mortar libraries are commonly cited as examples of “third places:” community building spaces outside of home and work which embody qualities of equity and access without placing demands upon those who use them. However, as libraries increasingly invest in digital services, can they continue to serve in that role through virtual programming? Amid what public health officials are currently referring to as a “loneliness epidemic,” with the highest self-reported rates of loneliness and social isolation measured since sociologists began tracking it in the 1970s, the community-building role of libraries is perhaps more essential than ever. While much has been written …

The presenters will share the results of a 2021 survey of the academic library members of the Association of Research Libraries to determine how information technology services are organized within the libraries and whether there is a trend toward centralizing IT activities at the institution level. Survey findings from the 72 responding libraries address 14 information technology services and activities and identify who is responsible for their technology services, their level of satisfaction with the services, whether the responsibility for them has changed recently, and if so, why. Respondents also provided information about IT assessment and top three challenges. The …

Evaluating An Institutional Repository: A Case Study Of Singapore Management University, Pin Pin Yeo
Research Collection Library
An institutional repository (IR) was launched in 2010 for a university in Singapore. The motivations of setting up an IR were to dissemination the research output through open access, to promote the university and researchers, and to help increase their research impact. Some quantitative and qualitative performance indicators were selected and used to measure the success of the IR. For the review and the performance indicators, the data used came from the IR at SMU, interviews with faculty members, and a study of a set of journal articles available in the IR to test a hypothesis. The results of the …

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This chapter describes a large scale deselection project that took place at Belmont University. The library was renovated and rearranged, which results in the loss of some shelf space. In order to ensure that the best, most relevant parts of the collection remained available in open stacks, a deselection process was undertaken. Using the Koufogiannakis & Brettle EBLIP framework, we collected evidence via literature review, local evidence (circulation stats; WorldCat library holdings), and professional expertise (submitted lists for faculty review). After assessing this evidence, we agreed on a way forward and began. We started by moving a large number of …

According to ALA’s 2017 demographic study, the profession is nearly completely White while society consists of a variety of cultures and communities. The lack of representation is a matter of exposure, strategic and diverse recruitment, and retention of professionals of color as well as those belonging to marginalized communities. Recruitment and retention are key, but we must recognize that retention is successful when focused on a person's development through mentoring, coaching, and other targeted measures like residency programs. This paper discusses the benefits of residency and fellowship programs as a retention tool when implemented with intention and authenticity.
