Keeping The Light On: Academic Librarians & Burnout (Conference Presentation), Jason D. Phillips, Laura Pitts, Jessica Riedmueller, Joanna Warren

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

There is substantial research about sources of burnout among academic librarians; however, very little addresses the impact of the local environment. Responding to regional and institutional shifts while still trying to uphold the values of librarianship such as providing confidential and free access to information can quickly lead to mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion, classic symptoms of burnout. A panel discussion was hosted at the Arkansas Library Association (ArLA) / Southeast Library Association (SELA) Joint Conference, on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Academic librarians from different Southern states discussed their local environments, their libraries’ responses to recent events, and their strategies …

Generative Ai In The Student Research Process: Lessons From The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy, Isaac Wink, Jennifer Hootman

Library Presentations

Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT have potential as student research tools, yet they generally do not cite sources or may invent them, presenting a challenge of information disconnected from any source. This presentation applied pieces of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy to analyze this challenge and suggest opportunities to use discussions around the use of generative AI to make students more reflective researchers and consumers of information.

Introduction To Scholarly Communication, Nicole Webber

Bear GRADS

Academic professionals are sharing their research, scholarship, and creative works in more formats and to wider audiences than ever before. As this system of communication evolves, the opportunities for scholars expand, and so do their responsibilities as both consumers and producers of information. Maximizing the influence of our work means understanding and managing how it is affected by various methods of dissemination, evaluation, access, and preservation. This session will introduce the system of scholarly communication and highlight the issues most pertinent to graduate students and early career researchers.

The Scholarship Of Rock Music: Knowledge Mapping Through Bibliography, Monica Berger Oct 2023

The Scholarship Of Rock Music: Knowledge Mapping Through Bibliography, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Scholarship on rock and popular music has grown dramatically in volume and methodological variety and complexity including extensive use of interdisciplinary approaches. There currently is no comprehensive resource for scholars and educators to explore monographic scholarly literature on rock. I will showcase a new annotated bibliography, with a focus on disciplinarity and methodology, which provides a lens into how this scholarly discourse has evolved. This bibliography also makes visible broader trends regarding research topics in rock and popular music. This project will be a resource to academics and other authors, faculty designing and updating curricula, and librarians interested in building …

Implementation Of A Federated Information System By Means Of Reuse Of Research Data Archived In Research Data Repositories, Sylvia Melzer, Stefan Thiemann, Simon Schiff, Ralf Möller Oct 2023

Implementation Of A Federated Information System By Means Of Reuse Of Research Data Archived In Research Data Repositories, Sylvia Melzer, Stefan Thiemann, Simon Schiff, Ralf Möller

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

At universities, research data is increasingly stored in research data repositories according to a data management plan (DMP) and thus made available for further use. The challenge of reusing hundreds, thousands, or millions of data sets is to obtain an overview of the data in a short period of time and to search through all the data. The high variability of the formats used to store research data requires a new approach to data reusability that focuses on the visualisation and searchability of archived research data, which can also be combined with each other. In this article, we present a …

Academic Librarians' Opinions On Social Justice Advocacy, Judith L. Brink Drescher

Librarian Presentations

This session presented the results of 113 academic librarians surveyed regarding their views on social justice advocacy. As part of a mixed-methods exploration, quantitative, qualitative, and integrated elements were revealed. Beyond a comprehensive survey administered, librarian advocates describe how they approach issues of social justice, what the benefits are of addressing inequities within academic libraries, what barriers they've encountered in their advocacy efforts and initiatives, and what advice a more experienced advocate might offer to a peer with less knowledge who is interested in becoming more involved.

Voices Of A Pandemic Oral History Collection, Wendy Guerra, Cheryl Jiménez Frei

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Oral histories provide insight into the experiences of individuals and communities. These recorded memories and stories are a legacy to future generations through the voices of people who lived in and made their communities. Such stories are of lasting importance and need to be accessible to the story tellers, their families and friends, community members and researchers etc. while being preserved for future generations. This is where archivists come in. I work in the University of Nebraska at Omaha Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections, and our purpose is to acquire unique, rare, and specialized materials, such as oral history collections. …

The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia Smith Schlinck Oct 2023

The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Publications

A few semesters ago I was discussing the value of secondary sources with a student when they paused to think, then described secondary sources as “kind of like the 80/20 Rule, but different.” I’d never heard of the 80/20 Rule, but I jotted it down onto a Post-It note to look into later. Fast-forward to today and I now introduce my students to what I’ve dubbed “the 80/20 Rule for Legal Research” in all classes about secondary sources.

Beyond The Software: The Importance Of Personal Communication To Ensure Access In Complex Ill And Other Borrowing Transactions, Andrew J. M. Smith, David Velasquez

Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings

This paper focuses on the ILL aspects of a larger project investigating the continued availability of items identified in a 1991 bibliography (Dillard). For this stage of the research, the particular focus was on obtaining various theses and dissertations, as well as books and sheet music items. As Lowry (2006) noted, especially in the humanities and social sciences, the majority of dissertation and thesis research has traditionally not resulted in further publication, with only about 10% of this work being republished in other forms. This means that the original works are the only source of this research, and therefore there …
