Unlocking The Past: The Raetian Culture And The Frankfurth Legacy At The Milwaukee Public Museum, Mikayla Fehring Aug 2024

Unlocking The Past: The Raetian Culture And The Frankfurth Legacy At The Milwaukee Public Museum, Mikayla Fehring

Theses and Dissertations

The cultural group called the Raetians, also known as the Fritzens-Sanzeno Culture, inhabited the Tirol area of the Alps (modern day north-east Italy and south-west Austria) between the 6th century BCE and the 1st century CE. Defined largely based on their material culture, which incorporated elements borrowed from the Etruscans and the continental Celts, the Raetians were eventually annexed by the Roman empire. German American antiquarian William Frankfurth excavated Raetian remains in various locations in the Tirol in the late 19th century. Following his unexpected death in Vienna in 1891, several crates of artifacts from his excavations were shipped back …

“This Knowledge Bears With It Certain Responsibilities To God And Our Fellow Men”: Missionary Motivations, Collecting Behavior, And The J.H. Wenberg Collection At The Milwaukee Public Museum, Hailey Lorenzen

Theses and Dissertations

Missionaries have contributed greatly to the ethnographic collections of museums, yet the connection between ethnographic objects and the Christian project that prompted their collection is often lost in the museum record. This thesis aims to reconcile a collection at the Milwaukee Public Museum (Accession Number 24531) with the evangelization work of its collectors, Joseph Hugo and Edna Wenberg. From 1902 to 1920, J.H. Wenberg served as a colporteur and missionary across South America; during that time, he developed a passionate interest in the Aymara of Bolivia and became an advocate for Indigenous people within the Methodist Church. This thesis combines …

Examining Individual Document Evaluation: An Eye-Tracking Analysis, Sukwon Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research on relevance judgment while searching for information on the web has been investigated in various contexts by scholars. This dissertation examines the behavior of users seeking health-related information online, specifically how those users operationalize both list and document evaluation. It focuses especially on document evaluation because it reflects the symbiotic relationship between the computer and the human. One of the broader aims of this study is to understand how users’ relevance judgments change during individual document evaluation. It examines whether there are any associations between eye-tracking variables and the perceived importance of each document. The perceived importance of …

Library Disaster Preparedness In Southeast Asia: A Systematic Review, Azraai Abidin, Mohd Najib Abdullah, Noor Faezah Shaari, Nur Shurbaniah Saad Jul 2024

Library Disaster Preparedness In Southeast Asia: A Systematic Review, Azraai Abidin, Mohd Najib Abdullah, Noor Faezah Shaari, Nur Shurbaniah Saad

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This systematic review, which follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, examines the current state of disaster preparedness in libraries across Southeast Asia. It evaluates existing research using four core emergency preparedness rule elements: risk assessment and planning, the communication plan, policies and procedures, and training and testing. While an initial search identified 488 potential studies, only seven met the strict criteria; these seven studies were from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This indicates either a significant gap in library readiness or a lack of comprehensive research on the subject. The results show that most …

Review Of War On Record: The Archive And The Afterlife Of The Civil War, Rose Buchanan Jul 2024

Review Of War On Record: The Archive And The Afterlife Of The Civil War, Rose Buchanan

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In War on Record: The Archive and the Afterlife of the Civil War, historian Yael A. Sternhell explores the creation, compilation, and publication of official records of the American Civil War and how archival processes shaped what we understand Civil War history to be today. This book is a logical outgrowth of Sternhell’s previous examinations of Confederate records and Civil War historiography and reflects the “archival turn” that she and other humanities and social sciences scholars have embraced in recent decades. Written in a clear, narrative style and punctuated by a wealth of interesting anecdotes uncovered in the records, …

The Presence Of Popular Business Titles In Abld Collections, Georgette Nicolosi, Lauren Reiter

University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works

Perspectives on the inclusion of popular reading titles within academic libraries have varied over the past few decades. While literature on the purpose of subject-specific fiction titles within academic reading collections exists, research on subject-specific non-fiction items is absent from the literature. The authors of this study recognize the ways in which popular business titles serve numerous purposes within their own institutions. As such, this study seeks to explore the holdings of popular business titles within academic libraries, and whether their physical location can provide an understanding of the perceptions of business leisure reading within academic research institutions. This study …

Librarians Need Accomplices!, Robin Naughton Ph.D, Simone L. Yearwood

The term “ally,” used to categorize a group of people from a dominant or majority group working to support marginalize people in the fight for justice is very active and well-known. Allies support without getting too involved or experiencing any trouble with their own life or profession. However, allies are not enough to fight for justice. People need to have accomplices, someone who will fight with them while the fight is happening, not stand idly by while injustices are being committed, and be an active partner and conspirator in the fight against racism, microaggressions, and injustice even if it means …

This paper presents the development of a novel orchestration tool that predicts collaborative problem-solving (CPS) behaviors of undergraduate engineering groups and investigates the use of that tool by instructors. We explore the impact of receiving real-time, machine-learning, model-based prompts on 1) instructors' orchestration strategies, which are strategies instructors use to manage and facilitate collaborative activities, and 2) groups' participation, including how groups are engaged in CPS activities. The orchestration tool is a dashboard that notifies instructors of–and advises them on–monitoring and intervening with groups who may need collaborative support and guidance. We describe the accuracy of the models in predicting …

Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón

School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship

Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using Alexander Galloway’s critical method of protocological analysis and descriptions of media tactics, we respond to fears of cybernetic domination. Protocols – the source by which cybernetic technologies enable automated datafication – enables us to respond to …
