Teaching And Collecting Technical Standards: A Handbook For Librarians And Educators, Chelsea Leachman, Erin M. Rowley, Margaret Phillips, Daniela Solomon
Purdue Information Literacy Handbooks
Technical standards are a vital source of information for providing guidelines during the design, manufacture, testing, and use of whole products, materials, and components. To prepare students—especially engineering students—for the workforce, universities are increasing the use of standards within the curriculum. Employers believe it is important for recent university graduates to be familiar with standards. Despite the critical role standards play within academia and the workforce, little information is available on the development of standards information literacy, which includes the ability to understand the standardization process; identify types of standards; and locate, evaluate, and use standards effectively.

Podcasts are important sites of knowledge sharing and co-creation. As opportunities to discuss niche interests, podcasts are where individuals come together to discuss the things they love, and for fans, podcasts are often opportunities to critically engage with their franchise or work with others in the fandom. The Invisible Labor Of Managing Executive Dysfunction At Work, Nicole Gustavsen
The Invisible Labor Of Managing Executive Dysfunction At Work, Nicole Gustavsen
Foley Library Scholarship
All library and archives work places a significant demand on our executive functions, a core set of cognitive controls in the brain. When they’re running smoothly, you may not even notice they’re there, but when they aren’t, even minor tasks seem impossible. Executive dysfunction is strongly correlated with ADHD and autism, as well as depression, anxiety, brain trauma, and numerous other conditions. Executive dysfunction is uniquely disabling in a complex work environment like a library, but managing it is itself a job, one which must be done on top of the other job. This talk is about that secret second …
Assessing The Use Of Critical Literacies In Mis/Disinformation Literacy Instruction, Melissa Chomintra
Assessing The Use Of Critical Literacies In Mis/Disinformation Literacy Instruction, Melissa Chomintra
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
In keeping with Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the theoretical perspicacity of Critical Race Theory, Lenoir and Anderson (2023) posit “technical solutions to political problems are bound to fail. Historical, structural, and political inequality—and especially race, ethnicity, and social difference—needs to be at the forefront of our understanding of politics and, indeed, disinformation”. The approaches to mis/disinformation in libraries and information studies have largely been grounded in two forms of literacy education; media literacy and digital literacy. Both media literacy and digital literacy offer a limited generic framing for engaging with digital information and myriad technology and fall short …

Fifteen years ago, I conducted a small study testing the error-correction tendency of Wikipedia. Not only is Wikipedia different now than it was then, the community that maintains it is different. Despite the crudity of that study’s methods, it is natural to wonder what the result would be now. So I repeated the earlier study and found surprisingly similar results.

Beyond Misinformation: The Misrepresentation And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson
Libraries' and Librarians' Publications
The contemporary information landscape has produced numerous incidents of researchers having their research misunderstood, misrepresented, or misappropriated—or worse, being subjected to intimidation and harassment—by individuals or groups who seek to cherry-pick evidence in support of ideological agendas or who wish to suppress evidence that counters those same agendas. While the covid-19 pandemic elevated these tactics in their frequency, visibility, and intensity, this phenomenon did not start or end with the pandemic. To help prepare current and future researchers for the possibility that their research might be misrepresented, misappropriated, or politicized in other ways by ideologically motivated individuals or groups, Syracuse …
