Valentine’S Day @ The Library, Raquel Estrada

University Library Publications and Presentations

The University Library celebrated its first Valentine’s Day @ the Library event in 2024 with the aim of promoting government resources. To capture patron attention this event highlighted free printable Valentine cards available from various government websites. To support this activity, digital posters were created promoting government resources, and an information table was set up featuring some of the printable Valentine cards and promotional material from the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). With positive response towards programming, we are expecting to continue this event in the future.

Roy O. West Library is once again bustling with traffic and it’s so much more than studying. There are students 3D printing in the Maker Lab, peer tutors offering one-on-one consulting about writing assignments, faculty engaged in conversations about classroom technology, and so much more. It seems like a good time to reintroduce the other folks in the building and invite you to visit.

In this chapter, we explore positive, humane ways in which feminist principles of empathy and care can inform job interviews in academic libraries and shape the process into a more person-centered, or “whole person” ideal (Lopez, 2022). The whole person ideal authentically considers individuals’ experiences, preferences, and needs so that job opportunities are truly equal for all. In encouraging candidates to bring their whole, authentic selves to the hiring process, academic libraries can preemptively guard against deauthentication often experienced by BIPOC library workers (Kendrick, 2018). It is possible to do this while still hiring for strategic priorities and expertise.

Building Resilience: Three Decades Of Cultural Heritage Emergency Preparedness And Response In Georgia, Tina Mason Seetoo, Christine S. Wiseman

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Georgia is a geographically diverse state with a growing population. Its vast and varied natural, cultural, and historic (NCH) resources contribute significantly to the state’s economy, yet they are at risk of damage from disasters. The awareness of the need for emergency planning for NCH collections has grown over the past three decades. Federal funding has always played an important part in this effort even if the focus of training has evolved over the years. This need can only be met with support from State and Federal agencies, networking, and outreach beyond the urban centers in Georgia. Through research, interviews, …

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

As funding agencies and publishers reiterate research data sharing expectations (1), many higher-education institutions have demonstrated their commitment to the long-term stewardship of research data by connecting researchers to local infrastructure, with dedicated staffing, that eases the burden of data sharing. Institutional repositories are an example of this investment (2). They provide support for researchers in sharing data that might otherwise be lost: data without a disciplinary repository, data from projects with limited funding, or data that are too large to sustainably store elsewhere. The staffing and technical infrastructure provided by institutional repositories ensures responsible access to information while considering …

Creating The E-Buzz Around Collaborative And Collective Dei Efforts In Academic Libraries, Essraa Nawar, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker

Library Articles and Research

Like many academic libraries, the Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University (USA) is committed to supporting and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for students, faculty, researchers, and staff and has increased its efforts in the last several years to reflect that commitment through its resources, services, and outreach activities. However, in the wider literature, the efforts of scholarly communication librarians in DEI initiatives outside of openaccess advocacy are less discussed. Nevertheless, precisely because scholarly communication librarians are concerned with advancing the dissemination of knowledge, they fit naturally into DEI efforts that seek to elevate new or historically marginalized voices and …

Don't Know Why I Would Need That Information...But Cool: Outcomes From A Website Usability Study, Natasha Floersch, Jennifer Mayer

University Libraries Publications

This presentation details our process and outcomes for those interested in conducting a library website usability study. Although this work was specific to a regional university library in Colorado, and our study was focused on student users, our process could be adapted and scaled for a variety of libraries and users. This project emphasizes that it is possible—and helpful—to focus on improving the usability of one aspect of an existing website, even when it is not feasible to redevelop the entire site. The presenters will share how to address the challenge of engaging different stakeholders, and that it is possible …
