Fear Of Ai, Christianity, And The Modern Library, Brady D. Lund, Zoë A. Teel
The Christian Librarian
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape aspects of our world, fears and misunderstandings about its implications are widespread. Some of these concerns are rooted in the practices and beliefs of our religious communities. This paper aims to address worries regarding AI and its impact on religion and Christian traditions. It does so by examining the nature of AI and its limitations, stressing the importance of informed discussions within communities. Examples drawn from academic literature, scripture, and prominent figures within the Church are used to illustrate key points. Libraries and librarians are discussed as crucial facilitators of these informed discussions …

As changes have occurred with Google Analytics over the past two years, web design professionals have sought alternative platforms to gain valuable insight on how users are interacting with online content. Academic libraries are no different in their desire to assess user interaction and behavior within their online platforms. In 2019, the Benedictine Library at Thomas More University transitioned to using Matomo Analytics out of a desire to find a low-cost and privacy-centric alternative to Google Analytics. While serving as the Library Director at Thomas More University from 2018 to 2021 and then as the Library Director at Wilmington College …

Leveraging Chatgpt For Qualitative Data Analysis: A Case Study On Data Management Practices Among Computer Vision Scholars, Zonghan Lei, Wei Zakharov, Yung-Hsiang Lu
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Qualitative data analysis plays a crucial role in deriving meaningful insights from research data. However, conventional software tools like NVivo present challenges such as high costs and complexity (Dalkin, et al., 2021). This study advocates for integrating ChatGPT, an AI technology, into qualitative data analysis workflows to overcome these challenges. Focusing on the data management practices of Computer Vision professors, the study investigates how ChatGPT enhances human analysis by streamlining processes and uncovering hidden patterns within datasets. Structured interviews were conducted with six participants from research institutions (R1). The transcripts underwent manual scrutiny to identify recurring themes and patterns. Subsequently, …

Two recent trends in collection development include finding new ways to bring patron voices into collection development and developing strategies for increasing the diversity and representation within collections. Indiana University Southeast (IU Southeast) Library recently developed a project that combined these two strategic directions by embedding an acquisition experience that used students enrolled in a sophomore block elementary education course to use the Diverse Book Finder (DBF) to select diverse picture books for the IU Southeast collection. While diversification strategies and projects around children’s picture book collections in academic libraries are nothing new, IU Southeast’s project is unique in its …
Fanbinding, Preservation, And Local Archives: Un-Digitizing Trends And Media Ownership In Fandom Information Practices, Kimberly Kennedy
Fanbinding, Preservation, And Local Archives: Un-Digitizing Trends And Media Ownership In Fandom Information Practices, Kimberly Kennedy
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Fanbinding, or the practice of printing fanworks into books, creates a physical format of primarily digital content. My previous research found that a common motivation for fanbinders to participate in this craft was preservation of their personal access to beloved fanworks, which echoes broader trends of controlling media through local physical archives. This implies an understanding of the ephemeral nature of digital content and a subsequent fear of losing access to their favorite content without their intervention. Fanbinding creates a physical copy of a fanwork that cannot disappear due to platform/author takedowns or server failures, thereby establishing the fanbinders’ ownership …

Fanfic! In The Library: What Can Be Learnt From How Readers Search For Fics?, Rowan Smith
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This research seeks to explore the use of fanfiction-specific language (FSL) within the fanfiction community and whether fanfiction readers would find it useful if FSL was incorporated into library catalogues. The aims of the research are to investigate how fanfiction readers learn, use and interact with FSL and to explore if incorporating FSL into public library catalogues would encourage use. A mixed-methods approach was taken – participants were surveyed using a questionnaire and follow-up interviews, which were analysed using descriptive statistics and coding following the constant comparative analysis process. The major findings of the study are that fanfiction readers largely …

The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Library Services And Information Management., Atmika Tripathi, Atmika Tripathi Ms.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present study explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring about transformation in library services and information management. The research used a thorough scale to assess the degree of artificial intelligence (AI) integration into libraries, as well as the resulting consequences for user experience and the encountered challenges. The results indicate improved effectiveness in the organisation and classification of materials, as well as increased user contentment, inside libraries that have integrated artificial intelligence technology. However, the emergence of concerns pertaining to data privacy presents considerable obstacles. This study highlights the necessity of ongoing training for library personnel and …
Cognitive Reappraisal: The Bridge Between Cognitive Load And Emotion, Rebecca Brockbank, David F. Feldon
Cognitive Reappraisal: The Bridge Between Cognitive Load And Emotion, Rebecca Brockbank, David F. Feldon
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Within this integrative review, cognitive load theory (CLT) is asserted as a powerful framework for conceptualizing human cognitive processes within learning. The relationship between cognition and emotion is then examined and further integrated within the scope of CLT. Emotion regulation strategies are discussed and adaptive strategies are proposed as being of particular relevance to broadening the theoretical and practical impacts of CLT. Central to the argument of this review is the use of cognitive reappraisal as a potential mitigator of cognitive load. Cognitive reappraisal involves reframing or reassessing understandings or beliefs that underlie an emotional response, which may mitigate cognitive …

How To Read A Patent: A Survey Of The Textual Characteristics Of Patent Documents And Strategies For Comprehension, Graham Sherriff
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
Reading patents is an important activity for inventors and anyone seeking to file or defend a patent, as well as for “exploratory” researchers such as students in a range of disciplines. However, they are notoriously difficult to read. This paper examines the characteristics of patent documents that impair their readability and seeks to identify comprehension strategies and techniques that may alleviate this difficulty. Insights were gathered from a review of the scholarly literature on reading and patent literacy, a survey of patent educators affiliated with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)’s Patent and Trademark Research Center (PTRC) Program, and …

Unraveling Collective Anomalies In Data-Driven Systems: Manifestation, Detection, And Enhancement Implications, Mohammad Bakhsh
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents an in-depth investigation into collective anomalies—complex patterns of data that deviate from the norm when considered as a group, rather than individually. It encompasses three pivotal studies that explore the intricacies of identifying and analyzing these anomalies within online customer reviews and urban traffic patterns. The research initially focuses on the subtle shifts in consumer feedback patterns, highlighting the challenges of detecting early signs of collective anomalies. It then advances to the analysis of urban traffic, emphasizing the detection of anomalous trajectory patterns and their implications for urban planning. The final study introduces a spatio-temporal framework to …

Academic Librarians With Disabilities: A Literature Review, Bridgette L. Whitt

Libraries' discussion of disabilities is normally focused on the patrons who are served and not the em-ployees who work within the walls of the institution. The population of adults with disabilities in the United States is growing, and the current research results show that the number of librarians who iden-tify as having disabilities is not close to equally representing the population in the profession. This paper reviews the literature written about academic librarians with disabilities and investigates the issues that are being faced by those librarians with disabilities and the hindrances that are keeping that representa-tion level reduced in the …
