Developing Emotional Intelligence For Leadership In An Australian State Emergency Service, Rae David, Dominique Parrish
Developing Emotional Intelligence For Leadership In An Australian State Emergency Service, Rae David, Dominique Parrish
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The organizational benefits of emotionally intelligent leaders and leadership are well documented. Likewise, the potential organizational gains from an investment in programmes designed to develop the emotional intelligence of leaders are strongly supported. The critical factor is whether the programmes for developing emotional intelligence will be effective and achieve the desired outcomes. This presentation is based on a study that explored how emotional intelligence can be developed and a subsequent program designed to develop emotional intelligence in a senior management group of a State Emergency Service in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

Exploring The Utility Of A 'Praxis' Evaluation Framework In Capturing Transformation: A Tool For All Seasons?, Sally Hardy, Valerie J. Wilson, Bob Brown
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
An evaluation approach, developed for the purpose of capturing greater understanding of transformational change in healthcare contexts, is presented. PRAXIS evaluation is an innovative framework that aims to capture the dynamic subtleties of individual, team and organisational transformation within the complexity of contemporary healthcare contexts. The PRAXIS evaluation framework offers a collaborative process for evaluating healthcare practice change and takes into consideration the influences of workplace culture. An ultimate intention is to further inform new knowledge creation and its subsequent transfer into critically informed, considered, practical action; i.e. praxis. The intention is to provide examples of using the PRAXIS evaluation …

Abdominal fat-related activation of the innate immune system and insulin resistance (IR) are implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Recent data support an important role of the adaptive immune system as well. In this study, we investigate the association between waist circumference and markers of systemic adaptive immune activation, and the potential mediating role of innate immune activation and/or IR herein. The study population consisted of 477 (304 men) individuals (mean age: 59.4±7.0 years) in whom waist circumference, HOMA2-IR (IR derived from homeostasis model assessment), and markers of innate (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, serum amyloid A (SAA)) and …

Feasibility And Effectiveness Of Nurse-Delivered Smoking Cessationcounselling Combined With Nicotine Replacement In Australiangeneral Practicedar_2, Nicholas Zwar, Robyn Richmond, Gail Forlonge, Iqbal Hasan
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Introduction and Aims. Practice nurses (PN) are an alternative workforce for cessation support in primary care, but their role and effectiveness is underdeveloped and underresearched. This study evaluated a model of smoking cessation intervention in Australian general practice based on PNs. Smokers were identified by their general practitioner (GP) and referred to the PN for cessation support over four counselling visits and offered free nicotine patches. Design and Methods. Pre- and post-study using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods. Cessation outcomes were collected by patient self-report at 6months. Semistructured interviews were conducted with PNs and GPs to provide qualitative data on …

Density Of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors 2 And 3 (Mglur2/3) In The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Does Not Differ With Schizophrenia Diagnosis But Decreases With Age, Elisabeth T. Frank, Kelly A. Newell, Xu-Feng Huang
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Metabotropic glutamate receptors 2 and 3 (mGluR2/3) have been shown as efficient targets for antipsychotic intervention. We therefore investigated the receptor density of mGluR2/3 in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC; Brodman area 46) of schizophrenia/schizoaffective patients (n=37) and matched controls (n=37) using receptor autoradiography. No difference in mGluR2/3 density was identified in relation to schizophrenia diagnosis. Overall and in individual groups, a negative correlation of mGluR2/3 density and age at death has been found. These and previous results suggest that density of mGluR2/3 in the dlPFC is less likely to impact on the efficiency of the mGluR2/3 agonist in treating …

Antipsychotic Treatment And Neuregulin 1 -Erbb4 Signalling In Schizophrenia, Bo Pan, Xu-Feng Huang, Chao Deng
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Evidence from genetic, transgenic and post-mortem studies has strongly supported the critical role that neuregulin 1 (NRG1) and its ErbB4 receptor plays in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. This article aims to review current evidence regarding the effects of antipsychotic treatment on NRG1–ErbB4 signalling. NRG1 and ErbB4 knockout mice display abnormal behaviours relevant to certain features of schizophrenia, which could be improved by antipsychotic (clozapine/haloperidol) treatment. In contrast to most NRG1/ErbB4 knockout mice with a decreased NRG1–ErbB4 signalling, the majority post-mortem studies showed an increased NRG1–ErbB4 signalling in schizophrenic patients. These differences could be due to degrees of alteration in risk …

Food And Nutrition Security In The Australia-New Zealand Region: Impact Of Climate Change, Linda Tapsell, Yasmine Probst, Mark Lawrence, Sharon Friel, Victoria Flood, Anne Mcmahon, Rosalind Butler
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Climate change is likely to have an effect on global food production but to examine effects on food and nutrition security, an appreciation of the dimensions of food security is required. The 1996 World Food Summit defined food security as ‘when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active healthy life’. Thus food security is largely multi-factorial and defined by context. Australia and New Zealand both have substantial agricultural profiles and there is a significant production in meat and livestock, dairy …

Taking Programs For Vulnerable Adolescents To Scale: Experiences, Insights, And Evidence, Martha Brady
Taking Programs For Vulnerable Adolescents To Scale: Experiences, Insights, And Evidence, Martha Brady
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The international development community’s desire to alleviate poverty and improve health outcomes presents an extraordinary opportunity to transform the lives of young people, particularly girls. Cycles of illiteracy, poor job prospects, and social isolation can be broken but will require concerted efforts to reach large numbers of vulnerable adolescent girls with robust asset-building programs. Scaling-up effective pilot programs will be critical to achieving these goals. While there is an expanding body of research around scaling up health interventions, less is known or documented about scaling up cross-sectoral programs for adolescent girls. Bringing to scale programs directed toward poor, often invisible …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The frequency of ADHD in the aging population and its relationship to late-life cognitive decline has not been studied previously. To address this gap in our understanding, the Wender-Utah ADHD Rating scale (WURS) was administered to 310 geriatric subjects with cognitive status ranging from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment to overt dementia. The frequency of WURS-positive ADHD in this sample was 4.4%. WURS scores were not related to cognitive diagnoses, but did show nonlinear associations with tasks requiring sustained attention. The frequency of ADHD appears stable across generations and does not appear to be associated with MCI or dementia …

Religious-Base Social Relationship And The Psychological Well-Being Of The Elderly: Gender And Race Variations, Eugene C. Uche
Religious-Base Social Relationship And The Psychological Well-Being Of The Elderly: Gender And Race Variations, Eugene C. Uche
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
More people in the United States are approaching retirement age, a trend which has resulted in increased study on life satisfaction and psychological well-being of the elderly. Previous researchers have focused on the relationship between religious social support and life satisfaction; however, there remains a gap in the literature regarding how race and gender may influence this association. Knowledge of interactions between religiosity, gender, and race will enable counselors working with different groups of religiously inclined clients to develop and implement religious-based interventions specific to their clients. Guided by the social ecological model, the purpose of this study was to …

Union And Nonunion Employment: An Investigative Study Of Factors In The Employment Setting That May Influence The Development Of Burnout, Rachel Elizabeth Costello
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The primary goal of this two-phased, sequential mixed-methods study was to discover whether union affiliation is associated with a lower occurrence of burnout in factory workers by comparing union and nonunion workers. The objective was to determine levels of burnout in union and nonunion employees as well their perception of social support in the workplace. The theoretical synthesis consisted of conservation of resources theory and the theory of reasoned action. The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) and the Quality of Worklife Questionnaire were used to identify the characteristics of the workplace (job demands and job resources) and the level of burnout. …

Rethinking Theory And Practice: Pre-Registration Student Nurses Experiences Of Simulation Teaching And Learning In The Acquisition Of Clinical Skills In Preparation For Practice, Angela Hope, Joanne Garside, Stephen Prescott
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
In the United Kingdom (UK) simulation learning has been recognised in the form of a regulatory agreement that may replace hours from clinical practice. This integration has become an embedded feature of the pre-registration nursing programme at a University in the North of England, along with strategic investment in staff and simulation suites developed to underpin this curriculum change albeit in the absence of sparse empirical evidence, hence the rationale for the study which was designed to explore the relationship between simulation, theory and practice. The study features a thematic analysis of evaluation questionnaires from pre-registration student nurses (n=>500) …

Single Molecule Studies Of Physiologically Relevant Telomeric Tails Reveal Pot1 Mechanism For Promoting G-Quadruplex Unfolding, Hong Wang, Gerald J. Nora, Harshad Ghodke, Patricia L. Opresko
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Human telomeres are composed of duplex TTAGGG repeats and a 3' single-stranded DNA tail. The telomeric DNA is protected and regulated by the shelterin proteins, including the protection of telomeres 1 (POT1) protein that binds telomeric single-stranded DNA. The single-stranded tail can fold into G-quadruplex (G4) DNA. Both POT1 and G4 DNA play important roles in regulating telomere length homeostasis. To date, most studies have focused on individual quadruplexes formed by four TTAGGG repeats. Telomeric tails in human cells have on average six times as many repeats, and no structural studies have examined POT1 binding in competition with G4 DNA …

Assessing Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Attitudes Among African Immigrants, Hazel Namona Nachembe
Theses Digitization Project
This study attempted to assess and explore the attitudes of African immigrants towards HIV testing and seeking HIV services in the U.S. The pool of HIV/AIDS cases among blacks at risk in the United States does not clearly distinguish between African Americans and Black African immigrants in regard to attitudes on HIV testing. A closer exploration of African immigrants as specific black sub-groups within the larger group of blacks or African Americans infected with HIV may help distinguish and explain the increase in incidents and high risk behaviors among blacks.

Bullying is the element in the misuse of power in all levels of society, beginning with the development of children, what they learn in their homes, schools, playgrounds, through to adults and the incivility of our public discourse today, including government and the nation's Capitol.
What follows is a holistic systems model to educate adults first towards a humane approach to stop bullying, and in turn help heal communities - all of our responsibility.
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Positive Psychological Functioning And Depression, John Forbes
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Positive Psychological Functioning And Depression, John Forbes
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
With unipolar depression one of the most disabling illnesses in the world, it is important to appropriately conceptualise this disorder in order to inform research, diagnosis, and treatment. While many psychological theories of depression include constructs of polarity, most research and diagnostic criteria have focused on a single dimension that concentrates on the presence of negative symptomatology. This is reflective of an illness model of mental health that predominantly considers the presence of negative symptoms in terms of mood, cognitions, behaviours, and overall functioning. Nevertheless, there is strong research evidence indicating that positive and negative aspects of psychological functioning are …
Women's Job Search Behavior In The Egyptian Labor Market, Somaya Abdel Mowla
Women's Job Search Behavior In The Egyptian Labor Market, Somaya Abdel Mowla
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This study evaluates the difference between male and female job search behavior in the Egyptian labor market and the changes in this behavior between 1998 and 2006, in order to examine the effect of transition toward a market-oriented economy on job search activity. The paper also investigates the determinants of women’s job search behavior. The results reveal three alarming facts that raise worries about women’s labor force participation and their future labor market outcomes: women were less active job searchers than men, the gender gap in job search has widened, and this gap is even wider when excluding registration in …

First Generation Of Gender And Hiv Programs: Seeking Clarity And Synergy, Judith Bruce, Nicole Haberland, Amy Joyce, Eva Roca, Tobey Nelson Sapiano
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
In the past decade, there have been expanding resources to address the underlying gender dimensions of HIV. This has been particularly urgent in sub-Saharan Africa as the female-to-male infection ratios in young populations has reached 3 to 1 and sometimes above. The phrase “gender and HIV” has become commonplace yet does not provide any specific guidance as to target audiences, content, or measurable results. It can include everything from microcredit programs for HIV-positive women, to workplace programs seeking to change negative male norms, to efforts to increase respect for diverse sexual and gender identities. This review, conducted by the Population …

National Efforts Toward Fgm-Free Villages In Egypt: The Evidence Of Impact, Ghada Barsoum, Nadia Rifaat, Omaima El-Gibaly, Nihal Elwan, Natalie Forcier
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This report is a midterm evaluation and documentation of the process and approach of the FGM-Free Village Model implemented in Egypt by the National Council of Childhood and Motherhood with assistance from the Population Council. In a comparison of responses from women and men in intervention groups to those in nonintervention (control) villages, data analysis shows that the program has been successful in changing views and attitudes toward female genital mutilation (FGM). FGM is an entrenched generational practice, and eradicating it in a community requires concerted effort over an extended period of time. This evaluation strongly recommends that efforts be …
