A Classification Scheme For Medical Expenditures, James Veney, Arnold Kaluzny
A Classification Scheme For Medical Expenditures, James Veney, Arnold Kaluzny
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Medical care represents a significant portion of society's response to problems affecting social welfare. While the problems surrounding medical care are complex, a major part of these problems can be attributed to the fact that medical care expenditures are viewed indiscriminately without regard for the nature of the expenditures themselves. This paper presents a framework to differentiate various types of medical care expenditures. The paper argues that medical care expenditures can be classified as either instrumental-consummatory or as external-internal relative to the medical care system. The consequences of this classification and some conclusions which may be drawn from it are …

The Philosophy And Goals Of A Farm-Living Group Home For Mentally Retarded Citizens In The State Of Washington: A Working Plan Of Implementation, Max R. Grimmett
All Graduate Projects
Group homes were established as a result of House Bill #465 passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1969. The purpose of this bill was to make it possible for some people living in state institutions to move into smaller and more "homelike" places.
The purpose of the study was to determine what has been done in the area of group homes under the Washington State Guidelines. A study was made of the existing group homes and the programs offered at the present time. After collecting data, a plan was developed to create a proposed farm-living group home for mentally …
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix C: Social And Economic Assessment, Edward C. Jordan, Roger Creighton
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project Environmental Impact Statement: Appendix C: Social And Economic Assessment, Edward C. Jordan, Roger Creighton
Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project
The purpose of this assessment of the social and economic impact of implementing the Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project, therefore, is not to flatly predict impacts. Rather, the intent is to provide information and judgments which can help people recognize the potential for changes and take appropriate steps to prepare for, accommodate, and adjust to those changes. Thus we hope that this report's success will be measured by how well it provides information with which local citizens and all others involved in this project can proceed with their planning and decision-making processes.

Social Wolk In Relief And Rehabilitation After Wars, At Home Aid Abroad, Walter A. Friedlander
Social Wolk In Relief And Rehabilitation After Wars, At Home Aid Abroad, Walter A. Friedlander
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In the United States after the wars of the 19th. century, particularly after the Civil War, no professional social workers existed who could have cared for the wounded soldiers and civilians or for the disabled veterans. But in Europe, during the war of France and Italy against Austria, in 1859, the foundation of some services for the wounded soldiers of the three involved nations were laid by a Swiss banker, Henry Dunant of Geneva who arrived by accident on the evening of the bloody battle in Solferino (Italy) and started to help bandaging some of the bleeding victims of this …

A Comparison Of Self Ratings Of Change Done Dependently And Independently, Pamela P. Irwin
Masters Theses
A total of 243 Mental Hygiene and Introductory Psychology students completed ratings of adjustment in January of 1976. In May of the same year, 65 of the original Mental Hygiene students and 110 of the Introductory students completed the post-testing under one of four procedures. The post-testing procedures were: 1) dependent testing (defined as post-testing with awareness of pre-testing results) with an option to change their original test; 2) independent post-tesing which was the traditional method; then completion of dependent rating; 3) testing of their recall of original ratings, then dependent testing; and 4) dependent testing without the option to …

Videotape Feedback And Its Effects On Two Communicational Modalities, John Joseph Benda
Videotape Feedback And Its Effects On Two Communicational Modalities, John Joseph Benda
Masters Theses
The present study was concerned with the applicability of various videotape feedback procedures on two communication modalities. The communication modalities studied dealt with the visual and auditory orientation of 80 college students.
The vast and, for the most part, positive findings associated with videotape feedback have fascinated therapists for the last couple of years. However, for the most part, videotape feedback has been used with individuals without taking into consideration the different ways these individuals communicate and/or learn. The purpose of the present experiment was to analyze the various aspects in which individuals communicate. Once their communicational modality was established …
A Didactic Method Of Preparation For Encounter Group Participants, Lawrence H. Bergmann
A Didactic Method Of Preparation For Encounter Group Participants, Lawrence H. Bergmann
Masters Theses
The utilization of group procedures has mushroomed in the past ten years. While developing in part from group psychotherapy, involvement in groups has become a movement in its own right. Encounter groups, marathons or other intensive group experiences are no longer seen as a "second-best" treatment but a useful technique to be added to the tools of the psychotherapist. However, the rapid development of these treatments have often exceeded a strong theoretical rationale and the negative consequences have become increasingly evident. Preparation for individual therapies has been shown to be one method for improving outcomes and avoiding undesirable consequences. However, …

The Use Of Operant Procedures To Develop Ambulation In A Wheelchair Confined Male, Burton E. Shook
The Use Of Operant Procedures To Develop Ambulation In A Wheelchair Confined Male, Burton E. Shook
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that operant procedures can be successfully used in physical rehabilitation. This study was an attempt to develop standing and walking behaviors in a 47-year old male who was confined to a wheelchair. A multiple baseline design across settings was used to demonstrate the effects of verbal, physical and edible reinforcers on three sub-behaviors of standing. The first two sub-behaviors were trained and training had begun on the third sub-behavior when the study was abruptly terminated. Thus, no training sessions for walking took place.

Comparison Of Three Maintenance Procedures Following Treatment By Rapid Smoking, Stuart Paul Gordon
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-two cigarette smokers received six sessions of rapid smoking after which they were randomly assigned to one of four maintenance conditions, The conditions were (a) contingency contracting, (b) social support, (c) a continuation of rapid smoking and (d) a minimal contact control group, A total of seven maintenance sessions were scheduled for each maintenance group, and they were spread over a three month period. At the end of the maintenance period the control group was smoking at baseline level again. No differences between the maintenance groups were detected, However, the contracting group and the social support group were smoking significantly …
Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher
Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher
Legacy ETDs
A group of seven severely and profoundly retarded adults from a sheltered workshop program were trained in cooperative play (basketball skills and hand clapping) using social and edible reinforcement and fading procedures. The generalization effects of the training on non-reinforced (undesirable) behaviors in an extratraining setting was investigated. A reversal technique in which the reinforcement was temporarily withdrawn demonstrated the reliable functioning of the training procedures. Independent observers recorded target behaviors during five phases: Baseline; Training; Generalization Testing; Extinction; Generalization Testing. The rate of undesirable behaviors decreased significantly in the extra-training setting (activity room) following the training phase. The findings …

Understanding The Health And Social Service Needs Of People Over Age 65, Laurence G. Branch
Understanding The Health And Social Service Needs Of People Over Age 65, Laurence G. Branch
Center for Survey Research Publications
The complexity of the issues involved with providing appropriate health care and social services from the appropriate setting to people over age 65 can hardly be overstated. One of the present debates in the field focuses on the value of institutions as the customary setting for providing health care; the arguments are based on considerations of economic efficiency and the recipient's quality of life. Some of the debators suggest deinstitutionalizing as many of the health care recipients as possible, while simultaneously upgrading the quality and quantity of home based support services. The logic of deinstitutionalization is often buttressed by claims …

The Modification Of Smoking Behaviour: A Research Evaluation Of Aversion Therapy, Hypnotherapy, And A Combined Technique, Herman Surkis
The Modification Of Smoking Behaviour: A Research Evaluation Of Aversion Therapy, Hypnotherapy, And A Combined Technique, Herman Surkis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This study compared aversion therapy, hypnotherapy, and a combined method. It was predicted that the treatment of imagined behaviour would generalize to overt behaviours. Individuals were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the aversion group with shock contingent on imagined behaviour, and finally the combined group which consisted of traditional hypnotherapy in combination with aversion therapy. The treatments were contained on separate cassettes with each subject receiving his appropriate cassette. Subjects met in groups of 3-5 individuals, twice a week for three weeks. Individuals acted as their own controls through the establishment of a pre-treatment baseline of smoking rate. …
A Study Of Factor B Of The Early School Personality Questionnaire(Espq) As A Valid Measure Of General Mental Ability, Claude S. Iles
A Study Of Factor B Of The Early School Personality Questionnaire(Espq) As A Valid Measure Of General Mental Ability, Claude S. Iles
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the validity of the general ability factor, Factor B of the Early School Personality Questionnaire(ESPQ), in two ways. First, validity coefficients for Factor B were obtained by computing product-moment correlation coefficients between the ESPQ Factor B raw scores of 40 developmentally disabled subjects and their raw scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R). Second, the Kruskal-Wallis rank sums test and a distribution-free multiple comparisons test were employed to determine if there were significant differences among the mean ESPQ Factor B raw scores of subjects designated as mentally retarded, learning disabled, or normal. Specifically, it was …
