Boosting Brain Waves Improves Memory, Richard J. Addante, Mairy Yousif, Rosemarie Valencia, Constance Greenwood, Raechel Marino

Psychology Faculty Publications

Have you ever wanted to improve your memory? Or have you struggled to remember what you studied? Memory uses special patterns of activity in the brain. This experiment tested a new way to create brain wave patterns that help with memory. We wanted to see if we could improve memory by using lights and sounds that teach the brain waves to be in sync. People wore special goggles that made flashes of light and headphones that made beeping noises. This trained the brain through a process called entrainment. The entrainment put the brain in sync at a specific brain wave …

Biotechnology is changing greatly over recent years, providing huge benefits to human society. However, the ethics, safety, and negative externalities of biotechnology have become increasingly prominent. Currently, biotechnology is still in the early stage of development, and full of high uncertainty. Technological changes in this field have the characteristics of stronger subversiveness, complexity, and social relevance. The world is facing a process of great development of biotechnology, new outbreaks of ethical challenges, and ethical governance reforms. China should take this opportunity to promote the high-quality development of biotechnology on the one hand, and on the other hand, adopt a multi-pronged …

Critical Pedagogy In The Time Of Covid-19: Lessons Learned, Carol Christine Hordatt Gentles

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

The abrupt closure of universities due to the coronavirus pandemic caused unprecedented challenges for educators. They struggled to transition to online teaching almost overnight. This has raised questions about the readiness of Higher Education for digitalisation and hybridization of learning environments and focused attention on the renewal of teaching and learning models. It is incumbent upon those who practise critical pedagogy to join this conversation; the mandatory transition has raised difficult questions around how to ensure continuity of an agenda to offer students humanistic and democratic learning experiences in the new virtual reality. In this paper I offer a critical …

The Nature Of Anti-Asian American Xenophobia During The Coronavirus Pandemic: A Preliminary Exploration Into Envy As A Key Motivator Of Hate, Daisuke Akiba Nov 2021

The Nature Of Anti-Asian American Xenophobia During The Coronavirus Pandemic: A Preliminary Exploration Into Envy As A Key Motivator Of Hate, Daisuke Akiba

Publications and Research

Background. The current Coronavirus pandemic has been linked to a dramatic increase in anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate incidents in the United States. At the time of writing, there does not appear to be any published empirical research examining the mechanisms underlying Asiaphobia during the current pandemic. Based on the stereotype content model, we investigated the idea that ambivalent attitudes toward AAPIs, marked primarily with envy, may be contributing to anti-AAPI xenophobia. Methods. Study 1 (N = 140) explored, through a survey, the link between envious stereotypes toward AAPIs and Asiaphobia. Study 2 (N = 167), …

S5e9: How Are Nursing Students Helping Fight Against Covid-19?, Ron Lisnet, Kelley Strout

The Maine Question

Training to become a nurse has always been rigorous. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the stress and workload for nursing students and the medical professionals under whom they train, but it also provided a new opportunity for experiential learning. The School of Nursing at the University of Maine decided early in the pandemic to lend a hand wherever possible — training virtually every student to vaccinate patients against COVID-19 and provide other support. More than 400 UMaine nursing students have administered about 12,000 vaccines since January.

In this episode of “The Maine Question,” host Ron Lisnet speaks with Kelley Strout, …

Deconstructing Sex Differences In C-Reactive Protein Trends Over Time, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Olivia Lounsbury

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Objectives

Heightened inflammatory state, as measured by circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, can promote inflammation-mediated disease risk. It is important to account for population fluctuation and sex variation in serum CRP concentrations on overall time trends.

Methods

Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, we specify linear and algebraic decomposition models separately by sex to identify the drivers of the changing trends in the distribution of CRP values in the population.

Results

We found a nonsignificant overall increase in CRP, but a significant decrease among women and increase among men, over a 10-year period. We then used linear …

The Contribution Of Racism-Related Stress And Adversity To Disparities In Birth Outcomes: Evidence And Research Recommendations, Sabrina R. Liu, Laura M. Glynn

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Currently, racial and ethnic differences in adverse birth outcomes and infant mortality are some of the largest and most persistent health disparities in the United States. This narrative review article synthesizes existing literature to present a conceptual model of how racism-related stress and adversity are critical determinants of such disparities. We describe how historical and ongoing racism has created conditions wherein women of color are disproportionately exposed to chronic, multilayered stress and adversity and how the biological consequences of exposure to these stressors confers risk for adverse birth outcomes. Next, we identify important priorities and considerations for future research, including …

Manuscript Repository To Support Rigor In Dnp Scholarship, Marina Cuneo, Claire Sharifi, Jo Ann Loomis

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree process supports the dissemination of nursing scholarship. Peer reviewed nursing journals have reported an increase in volume of student submissions over the past decade, but only some of them are initially publishable. As an alternative or supplement to journal submission, the University of San Francisco has developed a library-based institutional repository collection for these manuscript submissions that is globally findable, searchable, and accessible. Submission to the repository does not compromise rigor, and manuscripts can be submitted to peer reviewed journals when and if student and faculty are committed to the editorial process.

Data catalogs contain metadata-only records for datasets, code, analytical tools, or other research outputs not traditionally included in bibliographic catalogs. The records include curated, enhanced descriptive metadata in order to supply additional access points, provide access instructions or explain data restrictions, connect researchers working on common topics, connect datasets with relevant analytical tools, track publications and funding associated with datasets, and highlight otherwise undiscoverable datasets while still accommodating concerns over PHI exposure. The Data Discovery Collaboration (DDC), a multi-institutional consortium providing a platform-agnostic community of practice to support research data discoverability through metadata, outreach, and software development, is focusing on …
