Have you ever wanted to improve your memory? Or have you struggled to remember what you studied? Memory uses special patterns of activity in the brain. This experiment tested a new way to create brain wave patterns that help with memory. We wanted to see if we could improve memory by using lights and sounds that teach the brain waves to be in sync. People wore special goggles that made flashes of light and headphones that made beeping noises. This trained the brain through a process called entrainment. Objectives This study used computer simulation modeling to estimate and compare costs of different free-roaming cat (FRC) management options (lethal and non-lethal removal, trap–neuter–return, combinations of these options and no action) and their ability to reduce FRC population abundance in open demographic settings. The findings provide a resource for selecting management approaches that are well matched for specific communities, goals and timelines, and they represent use of best available science to address FRC issues.

Background. The current Coronavirus pandemic has been linked to a dramatic increase in anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate incidents in the United States. At the time of writing, there does not appear to be any published empirical research examining the mechanisms underlying Asiaphobia during the current pandemic. Based on the stereotype content model, we investigated the idea that ambivalent attitudes toward AAPIs, marked primarily with envy, may be contributing to anti-AAPI xenophobia. Methods. Training to become a nurse has always been rigorous. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the stress and workload for nursing students and the medical professionals under whom they train, but it also provided a new opportunity for experiential learning. The School of Nursing at the University of Maine decided early in the pandemic to lend a hand wherever possible — training virtually every student to vaccinate patients against COVID-19 and provide other support. More than 400 UMaine nursing students have administered about 12,000 vaccines since January.

Objectives

Heightened inflammatory state, as measured by circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, can promote inflammation-mediated disease risk. It is important to account for population fluctuation and sex variation in serum CRP concentrations on overall time trends.

Methods

Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, we specify linear and algebraic decomposition models separately by sex to identify the drivers of the changing trends in the distribution of CRP values in the population.

Results

We found a nonsignificant overall increase in CRP, but a significant decrease among women and increase among men, over a 10-year period. We then used linear …

Currently, racial and ethnic differences in adverse birth outcomes and infant mortality are some of the largest and most persistent health disparities in the United States. This narrative review article synthesizes existing literature to present a conceptual model of how racism-related stress and adversity are critical determinants of such disparities. We describe how historical and ongoing racism has created conditions wherein women of color are disproportionately exposed to chronic, multilayered stress and adversity and how the biological consequences of exposure to these stressors confers risk for adverse birth outcomes. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree process supports the dissemination of nursing scholarship. Peer reviewed nursing journals have reported an increase in volume of student submissions over the past decade, but only some of them are initially publishable. As an alternative or supplement to journal submission, the University of San Francisco has developed a library-based institutional repository collection for these manuscript submissions that is globally findable, searchable, and accessible. Submission to the repository does not compromise rigor, and manuscripts can be submitted to peer reviewed journals when and if student and faculty are committed to the editorial process.

Monmouth Medical Center, founded in 1887, was the first hospital at the Jersey Shore. Over the past thirty years there was a limited effort to develop archival and historical collections that document this rich history. In conjunction with the medical center's 125th anniversary in 2012, a consultant was retained to evaluate the archives, develop operational policies and prepare exhibits. Public programs and exhibits about the medical center have been presented to state and local organizations, and a schedule of historical programs is offered in-house during National Hospital Week. Aurora Health Care in Wisconsin and Advocate Health Care in Illinois merged into Advocate Aurora Health in 2018. Advocate Aurora Health is a large, multistate health care system that has 26 hospitals, over 500 sites of care, and 75,000 employees. Aurora Health Care implemented an institutional repository (IR) in 2013. Through the merger we were able to expand our IR to include Advocate content in the summer of 2020.
