Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads
Nesting Status Of The Cooper's Hawk In Iowa: 1988-1996, David. J. Conrads
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Cooper's Hawk was once considered a common nesting species in Iowa. Organochlorine pesticides and their residues, along with habitat loss contributed to its decline throughout the Midwest after the 1940's. This species was classified as endangered in Iowa in 1984, but recent trends in nests found indicate that the population of these hawks has increased. Since April 1988, 53 nests have been discovered in Iowa. Due to the apparent population growth, this species was removed from Iowa's endangered species list in 1994.
The Effects Of Human-Computer Communication Mode, Task Complexity, And Desire For Control On Performance And Discourse Organization In An Adaptive Task, Cristina Bubb-Lewis
The Effects Of Human-Computer Communication Mode, Task Complexity, And Desire For Control On Performance And Discourse Organization In An Adaptive Task, Cristina Bubb-Lewis
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present study examined how different communication patterns affected task performance with an adaptive interface. A Wizard-of-Oz simulation (Gould, Conti, & Hovanyecz, 1983) was used to create the impression of a talking and listening computer that acted as a teammate to help participants interact with a computer application.
Four levels of communication mode were used which differed in the level of restriction placed on human-computer communication. In addition, participants completed two sets of tasks (simple and complex). Further, a personality trait, Desire for Control (DC), was measured and participants were split into high and low groups for analysis. Dependent measures …

Book Review - Okoboji Wetlands. A Lesson In Natural History, Robert W. Black
Book Review - Okoboji Wetlands. A Lesson In Natural History, Robert W. Black
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Michael Lannoo's reverent, musing history of the Okoboji region, and especially its wetlands and the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, is a uniquely structured, well-written and wonderfully illustrated introduction to a distinct region in Iowa, a rich natural history of wetland organisms and a relatively unexplored branch of environmental ethics. Lannoo draws upon many years of experience in this region, as a student, researcher and teacher, and the wonderful resources of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum to produce a volume that educates the reader of the history and natural history of the Okoboji region and provokes …

Measuring Hotel Service Quality: Tools For Gaining The Competitive Edge, Robert C. Ford, Susan A. Bach
Hospitality Review
As the hotel industry grows more competitive, quality guest service becomes an increasingly important part of managers' responsibility measuring the quality of service delivery is facilitated when managers know what types of assessment methods are available to them. The authors present and discuss the following available measurement techniques and describe the situations where they best meet the needs of hotel managers: management observation, employee feedback programs, comment cards, mailed surveys, personal and telephone interviews, focus groups, and mystery shopping.
Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter
Book Review - Lost Landscapes And Failed Economies, Tom Vetter
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In an intensive and methodical manner, Power casts doubt upon notions of environmental protection choking economic development. He demonstrates the fallacy of such a position and successfully advocates environmental protection as economically sound. The confusion that exists between the environment and the economy is largely the result of misguided convention.
Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald
Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
A semiparametric estimator based on an unknown density is uniformly adaptive if the expected loss of the estimator converges to the asymptotic expected loss of the maximum likelihood estimator based on the true density (MLE), and if convergence does not depend on either the parameter values or the form of the unknown density. Without uniform adaptivity, the asymptotic expected loss of the MLE need not approximate the expected loss of a semiparamteric estimator for any finite sample. I show that a two-step semiparametric estimator is uniformly adaptive for the parameters of nonlinear regression models with autoregressive moving average errors.
Econometric Estimation Of Foresight: Tax Policy And Investment In The U.S., Douglas G. Steigerwald, Charles Stuart
Econometric Estimation Of Foresight: Tax Policy And Investment In The U.S., Douglas G. Steigerwald, Charles Stuart
Douglas G. Steigerwald
We develop a method for measuring the foresight agents have. We first dichotomize an agent's information at current date t into knowledge up to date t+f and expectations after t+f. We then form a residual-based test statistic that allows us to compare prediction errors for econometric models based on different values of f. We illustrate the method, examining investment around tax reforms to measure the foresight firms have about tax policy. In this illustration, current investment appears to reflect currently available information but little foresight other than foresight of enacted policy changes.
Asymptotic Bias For Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimators In Models With Conditional Heteroskedasticity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Whitney Newey
Asymptotic Bias For Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimators In Models With Conditional Heteroskedasticity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Whitney Newey
Douglas G. Steigerwald
Virtually all applications of time-varying conditional variance models use a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE). Consistency of a QMLE requires an identification condition that the quasi-log-likelihood have a unique maximum at the true conditional mean and relative scale parameters. We show that the identification condition holds for a non-Gaussian QMLE if the conditional mean is identically zero or if a symmetry condition is satisfied. Without symmetry an additional parameter, for the location of the innovation density, must be added for consistency. We calculate the efficiency loss from adding such a parameter under symmetry, when the parameter is not needed. We also …

Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong
Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong
Kno.e.sis Publications
In this paper we consider the problem of materialised view adaptation in data warehouses. Materialised views are important in data warehousing where they are used to speed up query processing on large amounts of data. User requirements change over time, which may change the definitions of views dynamically. For such situations, the question arises whether the materialised views should be recomputed from scratch for every change in the definition or they should be obtained by adapting old materialised views. Changes to a view definition may be expensive, if the view is recomputed from scratch. Therefore, it is worthwhile to examine …
Gender Discourse In Small Learning Groups Of College-Level Developmental Mathematics Students, Allen W. Emerson
Gender Discourse In Small Learning Groups Of College-Level Developmental Mathematics Students, Allen W. Emerson
Dissertations
This study was motivated by the question as to whether women’s and men’s membership in different gender communicative cultures gives rise to gender differentiated ways of talking that are implicated in the failure of a mixed-sex group to achieve good mathematical discourse when women and men sit face to face engaged in various mathematical tasks. If so, in what ways and to what effect is gender discourse implicated in the failure of a mixed-sex group to achieve good mathematical discourse?
Models of feminine and masculine discourse styles based on the theory of communicative cultural difference, as well as a model …

Promoting The Flow Of Investment Resources Into Nigeria's Petroleum Industry, M O. Ojo, C. M. Anyanwu
CBN Occasional Papers
The objective of the paper is to review the investment climate and policy incentives designed for the Nigerian oil industry with a view to evaluating how supportive they have been in terms of attracting investment funds into the sector. The industry has grown over the years to become the backbone of the economy. Given its strategic role, recent revelations of possible distress in the sector attributable to fast declining investment expenditure, deserves analysis and remedial actions. The investment needs of the industry are massive. A survey of the. sector shows that there is a large resource gap between its needs …

A Summer Internship With U.S. Senator Patty Murray - Regional Office, Everett, Washington, Lisa J. (Lisa Jo) Braly
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
During the summer of 1996,1 participated in the US Senate internship program in the Everett Regional office of Senator Patty Murray. This was a fairly new office, having begun only five months before I started in July, as well as a small office. (It had one part- time person, my supervisor, which became two upon my arrival.) There was no precedent for what my job entailed so it was designed as the summer progressed. My supervisor was Jill McKinney, a very friendly and helpful woman who had been in the “political industry of staffing for various Congress-people over the years. …
Review Of Planting The Future: Developing An Agriculture That Sustains Land And Community Edited By Elizabeth A. R. Bird, Gordon L. Bultena, And John C. Gardner, Charles A. Francis
Review Of Planting The Future: Developing An Agriculture That Sustains Land And Community Edited By Elizabeth A. R. Bird, Gordon L. Bultena, And John C. Gardner, Charles A. Francis
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences
Why should you care about agriculture? Planting the Future provides an eloquent description of the current state of this' most basic human endeavor so critical to survival. Based on a series of surveys and on-farm studies in the North Central and Western states, the book recognizes the bounty of our conventional agricultural industry. More importantly for the future, it details a series of critical problems in the environment, the distribution of economic benefits, and the social dislocation resulting from the consolidation of lands and heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Today's productivity and cheap food in the market have hidden expenses …
On The Portability Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing
On The Portability Of Behavioral Vhdl-93, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Robert Ewing
Kno.e.sis Publications
Goossens defined a structural operational semantics for a subset of VHDL-87 and proved that the parallelism present in VHDL is benign. We extend this work to include shared variables in VHDL-93 that changes the underlying semantic model. In the presence of shared variables, non-deterministic execution of VHDL-93 processes destroys the unique meaning property. We identify and characterize a class of portable VHDL-93 descriptions for which unique meaning property can be salvaged.
