Observation Of Shelfwater Overrunning The Southern Slope Sea, Ajoy Kumar
Observation Of Shelfwater Overrunning The Southern Slope Sea, Ajoy Kumar
OES Theses and Dissertations
Analyses of two years (1992 and 1993) of high resolution (1.47 km2) sea surface temperature satellite images of the southern Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB), showed that unusually extensive overhang of shelf water occurs episodically, and coherently over along shelf distances of several hundred kilometers. These episodes are dubbed overrunning of the Slope Sea by shelf water. The overrunning volume has a "face" and a "back" (southern and northern limit). It transports substantial quantities of shelf water southward, and does not retreat onto the shelf, but eventually joins the western edge of the Gulf Stream in the vicinity of Chesapeake …

The Barriers Present In More Developed Countries And Less Developed Countries Slowing The Implementation Of Substainability, Luke Giovine
The Barriers Present In More Developed Countries And Less Developed Countries Slowing The Implementation Of Substainability, Luke Giovine
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In 1996 the natural resource base of the world is being depleted at a rate far below the sustainable level. This is very evident in less developed countries (IDC), where raw limited natural resources are being poorly utilized and/or exported to more developed countries (MDC). The More Developed Countries such as the United States, Japan, and Germany use a high amount of natural resources and energy to maintain their material Standard Of Living (SOL), and this is at rates above what their own country can sustain with its own natural resources within its own borders. Both MDC's and LDC's are …
An Experimental Technique In Lowering Total Dissolved Solids In Wastewater, Aaron Crotts
An Experimental Technique In Lowering Total Dissolved Solids In Wastewater, Aaron Crotts
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
An experimental method for lowering total dissolved solids in wastewater. This thesis project has been undertaken by Aaron Crotts in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. The problem undertaken in this thesis is to apply an experimental technique in wastewater treatment in hopes of reducing the total dissolved solids. Total dissolved solids consist of various dissolved ions in water such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur and sodium. In looking at one industry in particular a local Ice Cream manufacture, the problem with total dissolved solids is evident because of their manufacturing process, an …

Risk Perception And Trust: Challenges For Facility Siting, Howard Kunreuther, Paul Slovic, Donald Macgregor
Risk Perception And Trust: Challenges For Facility Siting, Howard Kunreuther, Paul Slovic, Donald Macgregor
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors maintain that, by granting legitimacy to different notions of fairness and building on common values such as responsibility, it is possible to design siting procedures that promote social cohesion, trust and a sense of fair play.
Fairness Across Borders: The Barsebäck Nuclear Power Plant, Ragnar E. Löfstedt
Fairness Across Borders: The Barsebäck Nuclear Power Plant, Ragnar E. Löfstedt
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dr. Löfstedt discusses the escalation of a controversy between Denmark and Sweden over nuclear reactors at Barsebäck in southern Sweden. He also discusses research that might lead to resolution of the dispute.

Fairness As Compassion: Towards A Less Unfair Facility Siting Policy, Benjamin Davy
Fairness As Compassion: Towards A Less Unfair Facility Siting Policy, Benjamin Davy
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dr. Davy argues that siting efforts fail because of perceived injustices and urges authorities to search more aggressively for ways to avoid injustice and to cope with the anguish of those who may be unavoidably shortchanged.
Unsiteability: What Should It Tell Us?, Michael Thompson
Unsiteability: What Should It Tell Us?, Michael Thompson
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dr. Thompson argues that if rich countries can effortlessly be rid of noxious wastes, they will not receive signals encouraging better lines of development - by market, as well as hierarchical and egalitarian, criteria.
Procedural And Substantive Fairness In Landfill Siting: A Swiss Case Study, Ortwin Renn, Thomas Webler, Hans Kastenholz
Procedural And Substantive Fairness In Landfill Siting: A Swiss Case Study, Ortwin Renn, Thomas Webler, Hans Kastenholz
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors describe the design and implementation of a process for siting a landfill. They see it as an application of procedural equity expressed in discourse ethic philosophy - one that includes checks for competence and substantive fairness.
Public Perceptions About Equity & Fairness: Siting Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities In The U.S. And Hungary, Anna Vari
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Based on comparative research, Dr. Vari recommends, e.g., that main actors' views about criteria for processes and outcomes be explored and that agreement be negotiated before a siting process is planned.

Weighing Evidence In Sexual Abuse Evaluations: An Introduction To Bayes's Theorem, James M. Wood
James M. Wood
This article introduces readers to Bayes' theorem, a simple mathematical formula that can illuminate general issues and assist evaluators in the field of child sexual abuse. The theorem is applied to a case study of sexual abuse allegations that arose during a custody dispute.

Bedrock-Sculpturing By Tsunami, South Coast New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant, R. W. Young
Bedrock-Sculpturing By Tsunami, South Coast New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant, R. W. Young
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Bedrock-sculpturing resulting in s-forms is associated with catastrophic flooding in near- and subglacial environments produced by flow velocities approximating 10 m s-1. These velocities can also be produced by extreme tsunami generated by submarine landslides or comet impacts with oceans. Repetitive tsunami events during the late Holocene have overwashed headlands along the New South Wales south coast and produced two suites of bedrock-sculptured terrain. At the smaller scale, s-forms similar to muschelbrüche, v-shaped grooves and sichelwannen have developed on upslopes while broad potholes, flutes and transverse troughs have formed on headland crests. Cavitation features consisting of sinuous grooves, impact marks, …

Tourism: Who Needs It?, Joan S. Remington, Marcel R. Escoffier
Hospitality Review
Is tourism economically beneficial? If so, who benefits? How much of the money generated through tourism can be channeled into other projects so desperately needed by the community without harming the local tour market? Will tourism continue to grow forever, or is there an end in sight? The authors discuss how tourism will change in approaching the next century: and how people will change if tourism is to remain such an important economic facto

Student's T-Test And The Glasgow Coma Scale, Joseph Lucke
Joseph Lucke
Study Objective: To explore how Student's t test, which assumes normal errors, is affected by the nonnormal distribution of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores.
Methods: A sample of 145,295 GCS scores from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation was assumed to represent the true GCS distribution. Four Monte Carlo simulations, each based on 40,000 replications, were conducted to approximate the distribution of t values arising from samples drawn from the GCS distribution, using sample sizes of 10, 30, 60, and 100 per group.
Results: The histograms of t values derived from the GCS distribution resembled the corresponding Student t distributions for …
