The Unintended Impacts Of Anti-Redlining Legislation, Risa Palm, James Corbridge
The Unintended Impacts Of Anti-Redlining Legislation, Risa Palm, James Corbridge
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Federal and state legislation intended to curb the practice of geographic loan discrimination or redlining may have the unintended and undesirable effect of preventing mortgage originators from using environmental characteristics as criteria in lending evaluations. Since the California fault rupture zones (special studies zones) do not contain systematic concentrations of poor, black, or elderly households, they should be targets for differential lending policies, such as mandatory earthquake insurance or structural reinforcements as conditions for mortgage loans. A clarification of the wording of the Housing Financial Discrimination Act is needed to alleviate some of the present potentially damaging effects of failing …

Utilization And Land Cover Examined In Two Blue Earth County Streams, Mark Gamm, Robert James Childs
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Examining soil mapping units of the United States Agriculture department's Soil Conservation Service for comparison with land usage In the Blue Earth River valley, this study found that seven of 56 units in the valley accounted for 76.5 percent of the study terrain. Agricultural use or non-use of the land units matched established . designations.
The Le Sueur River flows for about 40 miles within Blue Earth county of south ·central Minnesota. Land cover in the valley, as determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs, shows forest on 65 percent, agriculture on 22 percent, and other cover on 13 percent …

Entropy Measure In Input-Output Analysis, Martin Zwick, Abbas Heiat
Entropy Measure In Input-Output Analysis, Martin Zwick, Abbas Heiat
Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Applications of Shannon's entropy measure to the matrices of technical and interdependence coefficients, to the final demand vector, and to other aspects of input- output tables are proposed. These entropy measures serve as indices of different types of economic diversity. The relevance of such indices for economic planning and for analyses of economic structural complexity and development is discussed.

The Determination Of A Relative Chronology For A Surface Archeological Site Using The Obsidian Hydration Dating Method, Scott Preston Thomas
The Determination Of A Relative Chronology For A Surface Archeological Site Using The Obsidian Hydration Dating Method, Scott Preston Thomas
Dissertations and Theses
This methodological study is an attempt to develop relative chronologies for surface archaeological sites from the obsidian hydration analysis of waste flake samples. Two sites in southeastern Oregon were selected and their surface components sampled. The results of the obsidian hydration analysis indicate, that with the use of random sampling methods and general geochemical control, a fairly accurate representation of the history of an archaeological surface site can be obtained.

The Port Of Baltimore-Containers And Railroads: A Necessary Interaction, Thomas Sweeny
The Port Of Baltimore-Containers And Railroads: A Necessary Interaction, Thomas Sweeny
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper came about as a synthesis of interests in ships, railroads and history. Perhaps no other port on the East Coast has such a strong blend of these three forces as the Port of Baltimore. This paper is about the interaction of railroads and the port and how this interaction continues to play a major role in the Port of Baltimore's development. The original hypothesis assumed that Baltimore's strong history with the railroads made her a railroad port. But hard times and competitive truck rates have driven the railroads out of Baltimore to such an extent that rail service …
