How Ballot Measure Wording Affects Preference-Consistent Voting: Experimental Evidence From The United States, William M. Pierce Jul 2024

How Ballot Measure Wording Affects Preference-Consistent Voting: Experimental Evidence From The United States, William M. Pierce

Political Science Honors Projects

Why do some people vote for ballot measures that are inconsistent with their policy preference while others do not? It is important to explore this question in order to understand how well direct democracy translates the will of the people into policy outcomes. Drawing on electoral theories and cognitive science, I hypothesize that people are more likely to vote against their policy preferences when the language of a ballot measure is more complex. I test this hypothesis, along with causal mechanisms and heterogeneous treatment effects, using a survey experiment on a quasi-representative sample of voters in the United States.

Role Of China’S Belt And The Road Initiative In Global Development Finance, Srinivasa Madhur Jul 2024

Role Of China’S Belt And The Road Initiative In Global Development Finance, Srinivasa Madhur

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

China’s Belt and the Road Initiative (BRI), introduced in 2013 by China’s President Xi, has been a major milestone in global development finance. Resonating with the historical ‘Silk Road”, BRI attempts to connect many countries and continents around the world. Matching its humongous size of nearly $1 trillion, it covers about 165 countries around the world. Even as the BRI benefitted some of the recipient countries, it has built a mountain of debt among many developing countries. This paper suggests an efficient, equitable, and representative method of resolving the BRI debt-distress through the formation of a BRI Club, which should …

Pol 241 Globalization Syllabus, Jeannette Graulau

Open Educational Resources

The syllabus offers meaningful, open-access academic texts, art expositions, interactive maps, timelines and conferences that introduce students to the study of the 16th-century birth of globalization. This was a period in which for the first time after A.D. 1492, trade connected Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, creating dynamic and enduring change everywhere. The Columbian Exchange took off and Spain became a global superpower. Europe spread 'Western civilization' to the rest of the world, carrying xenophobia, wars, and economic exploitation everywhere it went. Military conquests and crusading campaigns against aboriginal peoples of the Americas and religious and ethnic minorities gave …

Observing Cairene Narratives And Subjectivities Towards Covid-19: Reflections On The First Year Of The Pandemic, Sarra Moneir

Future Journal of Social Science

Theoretical and methodological toolkits already existing in the field of political science and social science in the grand sense have been challenged by the tremendous impacts of waves and movements of social change since 2010 in the Arab Region. While political and social scientists were, and still remain, engaged in unravelling questions of how to apprehend the forms of social movements (re-)born, not just in the Arab world but also through the Occupy movements in the US and Europe, they soon had to redirect their focus on issues of migration and refugees, only to find themselves once again confronted with …

Back To The Future? How The Global Powers And The Local Militias Hindered Un Multi-Dimensional Mediation In The Libyan And Syrian Civil Wars After 2011, Ahmed S. Mahdi, Melissia Shapib, Noura Gamie Jul 2024

Back To The Future? How The Global Powers And The Local Militias Hindered Un Multi-Dimensional Mediation In The Libyan And Syrian Civil Wars After 2011, Ahmed S. Mahdi, Melissia Shapib, Noura Gamie

Future Journal of Social Science

UN mediation efforts in the Libyan and Syrian civil wars, which followed the Arab Revolutions of 2011, were hampered by the great power intervention, and by the belligerents' insistence on solving the problem through military victory instead of negotiation. There is a shortage in the literature which examines an alternative, or how UN mediation can be improved. One of the few models to assess, and improve, UN mediation in civil wars is the so-called Kane Model (2022). Using the model presented by Kane to assess the procedures of a powerful UN mediation process in internationalized civil wars, this paper argues …

Approaches And Tools Of Peace And Conflict Management Between Two Perspectives, Yasmine Z. Radwan Jul 2024

Approaches And Tools Of Peace And Conflict Management Between Two Perspectives, Yasmine Z. Radwan

Future Journal of Social Science

This study aims at pointing out the tools of peace and the approaches to conflict management and resolution presented in the Islamic and Western perspectives. It also searches for clarifying the convergent and divergent zones that could help in finding, analyzing and criticizing the basic concepts on which arguments and debates are constructed. This study concluded that the differences between the Islamic and the Western perspective are a human requirement for acquainting and integrating based on a crucial notion, which is identity. Identity is treated in details in many discourses and occupies a large place in the Western literature on …

Contestation And Consensus Over Davutoğlu’S Conception Of Turkish Regional Power Role In The Middle East (2002-2016), Shaimaa Magued

Future Journal of Social Science

In light of ebbs and flows in Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East, this study examines intra-elite disagreement and consensus over former Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s conception of regional power role since 2002 until 2016. While National Role Conception (NRC) literature has discounted intra-elite disagreements and variations, this study unravels contestations over Turkish regional power role within the AKP leadership and disagreements among the state bureaucracy, the opposition, and civil society from 2002 until Davutoğlu’s resignation in 2016. Building on factors of national role analysis, this study argues that Davutoğlu’s conception of regional …

Review Of The Meanings Of Discipleship: Being Disciples Then And Now, Cory T. Branham Jul 2024

Review Of The Meanings Of Discipleship: Being Disciples Then And Now, Cory T. Branham

Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal

Discipleship is not, and has never been, one specific thing, at one specific time, or place. Rather, it has a rich, but also often unflattering, history. That history is fool of ups, downs, rights, wrongs, twists, and turns. Discipleship in the Church can be viewed in two parts; The early Church through the Nineteenth Century being Part I (8). The explosion of Discipleship teachings and tactics that began in the Twentieth Century, and continues to the present, being Part II (9). Discipleship informs some believers to engage socially and politically yet encourages many believers to stay away from those circles.

Two Houses Divided? The Parallel Histories Of The Casa De Contratación And The Casa Da Índia, 1500-1580, Gustavo L. Romero Jul 2024

Two Houses Divided? The Parallel Histories Of The Casa De Contratación And The Casa Da Índia, 1500-1580, Gustavo L. Romero

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper seeks to investigate the histories of the Spanish Casa de Contratación and the Portuguese Casa da Índia in relation to one another, identifying possible ways in which each drew inspiration, or imitated the other during the period from 1500 to 1580. Though there is existing research into the individual Casas, comparative approaches have generally been avoided. This work synthesizes the literature and tracks interactions or trends between the Iberian empires from both an institutional and interpersonal perspective. Through analysis of bureaucratic charters, letters, and other documents, it outlines the time periods, possible reasons, and results of this …

Sentimental Empiricism: Politics, Philosophy, And Criticism In Postwar France, Davide Panagia Jul 2024

Sentimental Empiricism: Politics, Philosophy, And Criticism In Postwar France, Davide Panagia

Politics

Sentimental Empiricism reconsiders the legacy of eighteenth and nineteenth century empiricism and moral sentimentalism for the intellectual formation of the generation of postwar French thinkers whose work came to dominate Anglophone conversations across the humanities under the guise of “French theory.” Panagia’s book first shows what was missed in the reception of this literature in the Anglophone academy by attending to how France’s pedagogical milieu plays out church and state relations in the form of educational debates around reading practices, the aesthetics of mimesis, French imperialism, and republican universalism. Panagia then shows how such thinkers as Jean Wahl, Simone de …

Stories From The Border: The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lives Of Canada-Us Borderlanders, Andréanne Bissonnette Jul 2024

Stories From The Border: The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lives Of Canada-Us Borderlanders, Andréanne Bissonnette

Border Policy Research Institute Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to many changes in our daily lives. Along the Canada- US border, border restrictions had specific impacts on border communities: family separation, disruption of networks of care, lack of access to essential goods, job and revenue losses and others. While the impacts of the pandemic on border communities were covered by both national and local news outlets in Canada and the United States, the share of coverage that focused specifically – or included mentions of border communities – is limited. The aim of this project was to capture, collect and archive the stories from border …

Party Over Democracy? When Do Americans Stand By Democratic Principles, Zenat Ahmed Jul 2024

Party Over Democracy? When Do Americans Stand By Democratic Principles, Zenat Ahmed

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Studies show that people support their party’s representatives even when their behavior violates fundamental democratic principles for partisan gain. We test the effects of two interventions- each randomly and independently assigned—to investigate the conditions under which people will prioritize democracy over party goals. In the first intervention, we explicitly point out how an in-party politician’s behavior (e.g., banning public gatherings of their opponents) violates a core democratic principle (e.g., free assembly). The second intervention is a question-order manipulation to test if participants are less tolerant of politicians’ antidemocratic behavior when support for democratic principles is reported first. We find that …

Social Media And Surveillance Capitalism: Facebook, Political Polarization, Orwellian Dystopia, And American Democracy, Sunil Sahu, Punita Sahu Jul 2024

Social Media And Surveillance Capitalism: Facebook, Political Polarization, Orwellian Dystopia, And American Democracy, Sunil Sahu, Punita Sahu

Political Science Faculty publications

Social media platforms have played a significant role in recent elections in the U.S. and other democracies. While Facebook and Twitter (now renamed X) claimed that they are “on a journey to connect the world,” to serve the goals of reforms and to bring about more democracy, their platforms have been effectively used to spread lies, misinformation, and disinformation which led some analysts to argue that we now live in a post-truth world and that the Orwellian dystopia is upon us. This paper is an attempt to assess whether big tech companies have created an Orwellian state in the U.S. …

Why Does Multilateral Cooperation Vary Across Issue Areas? Trade Versus Foreign Direct Investment, Imran Khan Jul 2024

Why Does Multilateral Cooperation Vary Across Issue Areas? Trade Versus Foreign Direct Investment, Imran Khan

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Why does multilateral cooperation sometimes fail to emerge, even in contexts where multilateral cooperation would be more beneficial for all parties than bilateral cooperation? To explore this puzzle, a generalization of the stag-hunt game is developed. The key finding from the analysis of this “stag-elephant” hunt game is that because pursuing multilateral cooperation is a riskier strategy due to the need for a larger number of players to cooperate to achieve it, multilateral cooperation can fail to emerge even when the payoffs from multilateral cooperation substantially exceed those of bilateral cooperation. To instantiate the central argument, I have selected the …

A Criminological Analysis Of The “White Supremacy To Anti-Immigrant Violence Pathway”, Ida Oesteraas

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

White supremacy consists of intricate ideologies, systems, privileges, and personal beliefs that result in unequal outcomes based on race in various aspects of life, such as wealth, freedom, health, and happiness (Belew & Gutiérrez, 2021). This dissertation explores the manifestation of white supremacy across various societal levels and its consequent harm and violence against people of color, immigrants, and particularly immigrants of color from Latin America. Here, I coin the term “white supremacy to anti-immigrant violence pathway” to examine how white supremacy has intertwined with our institutions and society, demonstrating how the exclusion and policing of immigrants of color sustain …

ABSTRACT. This research discusses the extension of the conflict between two nations, namely Russia and Ukraine, in 2022. The ongoing tensions between these countries, dating back to 2014 and escalating into a designated military operation declared by Russia in 2022, have precipitated a global crisis. With other nations becoming affected actors, leading to fluctuations in energy prices and a surge in refugee numbers, numerous efforts have been made by many countries, including major global players. Western nations have imposed a series of sanctions on Russia, and Russia has reciprocated in response to these sanctions. Russia has adopted several strategies to …

The Absence Of A Hegemonic State In The Yaounde Code Of Conduct Regime In The Gulf Of Guinea, Maulana Ammar Auliaur Rahman Jun 2024

The Absence Of A Hegemonic State In The Yaounde Code Of Conduct Regime In The Gulf Of Guinea, Maulana Ammar Auliaur Rahman

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

In 2013, countries around the Gulf of Guinea established the Yaounde Code of Conduct as a maritime security regime to prevent and counter piracy and other maritime-related problems in the area. It turned out that numerous challenges made the Yaounde Code of Conduct unable to deal with the piracy problem in the area. This research, therefore, aims to explain the Yaounde Code of Conduct’s inability to deal with the problem using the Hegemonic Stability Theory, which is rooted in a power-based approach from international regimes study. By implementing explanative methods, the author argued that the absence of a hegemonic state …
