Rape Violence In India, Chisanga Chanda Jan 2024

Rape Violence In India, Chisanga Chanda

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The weaponization of rape in International Relations is often analyzed through the lens of Realism, focusing on cases where rape is systematically used as a tactic of war by enemy combatants or as “spoils of war”. This phenomenon is evidenced by high-profile incidents in World War II Japan (1941), Cambodia (1975), Guatemala (1978), Bosnia (1992), and Rwanda (1994). More recently, terrorist groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria have used rape to bind recruits to the group, and ISIS in Iraq has promised women as rewards and motivation. Such cases meet the criteria for the strategic deployment of rape to terrorize, …

Ireland, Intellectual Property And The Political Economy Of Information Monopolies, Kenneth W. Murphy Jan 2024

Ireland, Intellectual Property And The Political Economy Of Information Monopolies, Kenneth W. Murphy

Articles

Ireland’s policies towards US-owned global digital intermediaries (Big Tech) have emerged as an international political issue and received global media attention. So far, political and media focus has been on the impact of Ireland’s tax policies on the revenue-raising ability of other European states and perceptions of light touch regulation of those corporations based in the Republic. The current paper will focus on how Ireland’s switch to a focus on capital allowances for the sizeable American tech corporations has enabled the latter to sustain their dominance in the digital transition through incentivizing and subsidizing their switch to assetization as a …

Media Sanctions Narratives Two Years Into The Full-Scale Invasion Of Ukraine, Benjamin Raham Fatakhov Jan 2024

Media Sanctions Narratives Two Years Into The Full-Scale Invasion Of Ukraine, Benjamin Raham Fatakhov

Senior Projects Spring 2024

Economic sanctions are tools of pressure that utilize the financial leverage that the sanctioning entity has over the sanctioned entity, which has been used for centuries. In an increasingly globalized environment, countries share international platforms controlled by national and global financial institutions to conduct financial transactions, trade, and maintain complex supply chains. A country can use its financial, legal, and physical infrastructures to inflict economic damage on the target entity in reaction to a target committing some offense in the eyes of the sanctioning country. After the annexation of Crimea and the beginning of the Donbas conflict, much of the …

I Am Not A Hero: Heroic Action Divorces The Hero From The Political Community, Ari Kohen, Brian Riches, Andre Sólo Jan 2024

I Am Not A Hero: Heroic Action Divorces The Hero From The Political Community, Ari Kohen, Brian Riches, Andre Sólo

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Most people who perform a heroic act will, afterward, deny that their actions were heroic and claim that anyone would have done the same, even though that is demonstrably false (and, often, others were present who failed to act heroically at all). The literature on the psychology of heroism has never investigated why this is. This theoretical paper proposes an answer and seeks to provoke exploration of a previously unexplored topic. We note that people who undertake heroic action face a unique conflict: they embody their community’s highest values, while simultaneously breaking norms to stand apart from that community. We …

Urgensi Pemanfaatan Open Source Intelligent (Osint) Dalam Upaya Pencegahan Aksi Terorisme Di Indonesia, Nia Lavinia, Puspitasari Puspitasari

Jurnal Sosial Humaniora Terapan

The invention of increasingly sophisticated technology and an increasingly connected world has changed the nature of terror groups from "traditional terrorism" to "sophisticated terrorism". This change complicates the task of security forces because to be able to fight them, the authorities are required to be sophisticated as well. Starting from the concept of the "ring of security" information, which reveals that successful intelligence gathering will help prevent terrorism attacks. This research aims to illustrate the importance of utilizing Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) to raise the level of sophistication of the apparatus in intelligence gathering in countering terrorism. This research is …

The Indonesian National Police (INP) as a member of the INTERPOL takes part in multitude of activities conducted by the international organization. Currently, the Indonesian National Police is facing a rising number in the cases of missing persons, unidentified remains and crimes against children with casualties not only from Indonesian nationalities, but also international citizens. India's Security Threats From Chinese Military Funding And Economic Development In South Asia, Tran My Hai Loc Dec 2023

India's Security Threats From Chinese Military Funding And Economic Development In South Asia, Tran My Hai Loc

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Since gaining independence in 1947, India's population, expansive land size, robust economic position, and historical and cultural ties have enabled it to dominate South Asian neighbours with comparatively less developed economies and weaker military strength. Since Narendra Modi assumed office as the Prime Minister of India in 2014, the “Neighbourhood First” policy was coined to enhance India's influence in South Asia, creating a favourable environment for its ascent as a global power. However, China's increasing military presence and influence in South Asia through financial and military support to neighbouring countries have disrupted the region's security architecture. This article uses qualitative …

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Brand Activism And Democratic Legitimacy: Exploring Pitfalls Through A Habermasian Analysis, Roxan Degeyter Dec 2023

Brand Activism And Democratic Legitimacy: Exploring Pitfalls Through A Habermasian Analysis, Roxan Degeyter

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

Brand activism has emerged as a prominent practice among corporations, as they publicly take a stand on contentious socio-political issues such as gender inequality, climate change, or discrimination, often through advertising. While extensive research has been conducted on the impact of brand activism as a marketing tool, examining its effects on sales, brand image, consumer attitudes, and authenticity, only a limited number of studies have studied its influence on public debate and processes of democratic legitimation. The latter have portrayed brand activism as an empowering force for the supported social movements, the public sphere, and democratic legitimacy, largely ignoring the …

A General Model Of Good Executive Leadership In Policy Contexts, Thad Williamson Dec 2023

A General Model Of Good Executive Leadership In Policy Contexts, Thad Williamson

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

This commentary stipulates a general model of policy leadership, encompassing decision-making, implementation, and evaluation. The model stresses attaining clarity about the nature of the issue being addressed, the values at stake, and the possible outcomes of alternative courses of action. While focused on the context of elected executives in municipal government, the stipulated model has broader applicability to other contexts. The article contends that following the model may both improve the effectiveness of political leaders and help build consensus (or compromise) among distinct political actors.

France In The Middle East: A Democratic Justification For Military Interventions In Iraq And Beyond., Nicolas Demeure, Brice Tseen Fu Lee Dec 2023

France In The Middle East: A Democratic Justification For Military Interventions In Iraq And Beyond., Nicolas Demeure, Brice Tseen Fu Lee

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies

How did France’s refusal to take part in the war on Iraq in 2003 has created the conditions that legitimizes its future military interventions abroad? In this paper, a discourse analysis of the official French Foreign Policy Discourse is done to show why saying no to war in 2003 paradoxically allows France to carry out military interventions in 2015. This paper argues that France, while perpetrating an existing discourse of democracy opposing the civilized against the uncivilized that legitimates Foreign policy as a security tool, by its refusal, transformed military intervention a latent policy andlegitimized the French Self as …

Climate Change And Its Effects On Conflicts, Ann Lalicker Dec 2023

Climate Change And Its Effects On Conflicts, Ann Lalicker

Journal of Global Awareness

Over the last 50 years, scientists studied the Earth’s warming temperatures and the resulting effects. Although climate change is not a new concept in current events, the consequences it has on exacerbating growing tensions and sustaining violent and nonviolent situations are less widely discussed. Of course, conflicts, internal or international, and their causes are multifaceted and cannot just be explained by one factor alone. However, climate change has a definite role in creating tensions that lead to violent or nonviolent conflict, including famine and displacement, as well as war. Although this rapid climate change is relatively recent in human history, …

In Search Of A United Regional Front: Asean Roadblocks And Conflicting Foreign Policies In Addressing The South China Sea Dispute(S), Christian Fortich

Major Papers

The South China Sea has been a major geopolitical flashpoint of the 21st century due to maritime disputes. At stake are billions worth of aquatic resources and untapped energy reserves. Beyond these, larger issues of sovereignty, maritime rights, and the freedom of navigation are in question. The involved parties in the disputes are China, which asserts its historical ownership of more than 80% of the maritime features, and the ASEAN states of Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, and Malaysia, which heavily bank on the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Sea, in ascertaining their claims. ASEAN is supposed to …

Saudi Arabian Foreign Policy And Hedging: Playing Its Cards Right, Jaclyn Alexandra Kouleas Dec 2023

Saudi Arabian Foreign Policy And Hedging: Playing Its Cards Right, Jaclyn Alexandra Kouleas

Major Papers

This paper illustrates Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy through the lens of hedging theory. Under the neoclassical realism umbrella, hedging is a foreign policy strategy that middle power states use to accommodate for future risks of a declining hegemonic global power. Saudi Arabia endorses strategic hedging in its external relations to accommodate both the United States and China, reaping the benefits of both relationships. This paper addresses the following two questions: 1) What is Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy through the lens of strategic hedging theory? And 2) How will strategic hedging help Saudi Arabia prepare for a multipolar world? How countries …

Freedom, Vulnerability, And Capitalism, Jeremy M. Johnson Dec 2023

Freedom, Vulnerability, And Capitalism, Jeremy M. Johnson

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This project will explore how economic vulnerability plays a role in the functioning and maintenance of today’s economic and political systems while investigating how substantive freedom is threatened by economic precarity, why widespread vulnerability is minimally addressed by the state, and potential reforms to the current economic and political arrangement that could be made to ameliorate material harm. Much focus has been dedicated to the study of the coercive power of capitalism, but by analyzing how vulnerability is caused, perpetuated, and taken advantage of, a comprehensive understanding of the lived experiences of the working class, as well as their ability …
