Internal-External Control Of Reinforcement Versus Field Dependence-Field Independence, Robert Colclough Apr 1972

Internal-External Control Of Reinforcement Versus Field Dependence-Field Independence, Robert Colclough

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Most authors have regarded the concepts of internal-external control and field dependence-field independence as two basically separate dimensions. However, in the area of personality, the two concepts may be related to a considerable degree. A review of the literature suggests that many of the same personality characteristics which can be attributed to internally controlled individuals are also common to field independent people. Also, those characteristics common to externally controlled people are found in field dependent individuals (Cardi, 1962; Franklin, 1963; Crowne & Liverant, 1963; Strickland, 1962; Getter, 1962; Gore, 1962; Elliot, 1961; Witkin, Lewis, Hertzman, Machover, Meissner, & Wapner, 1952*). …

Personality And Achievement Factors As Influences On Church Attendance Of College Students, Patricia Welch

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

College students, even of the same religious preference, attend church functions with varying degrees o£ frequency. What factors influence the rate of attendance among students? This study investigated the relationship between reported church attendance and personality and achievement variables in a group of college juniors and seniors in a state university in the South. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant differences between students who reported attendance at church functions either (a) 7 or more times per month (High Attenders), (b) 2 through b times per month (Attenders), or (c) 1 or 0 times per month (Low Attenders) …

An Analysis Of Conceptual Color Matching, James T. Northrop Apr 1972

An Analysis Of Conceptual Color Matching, James T. Northrop

Masters Theses

The key pecking responses of six pigeons were reinforced in the presence of a bisected response key when both halves were of equal wavelength; responses to non-matching presentations were not reinforced. Subsequent generalization tests involving novel non-matching stimuli were conducted in extinction. The results indicated the acquisition of a conceptual color matching discrimination; however, post-discrimination training peak shifts may interfere with the demonstration of the concept of color matching.

Degree Of Depression In Women Preceding Abortion At The University Of Oregon Medical School, William M. Nathe, Ike R. Lacefield

Dissertations and Theses

This evaluation was undertaken because of an interest by the authors in the abortion program at the Medical School. Interest in the emotional status of patients receiving abortions was aroused while working in a field placement at the Medical School through the Portland State University School of Social Work.

With the consent and assistance of the Obstetrics-Gynecology Department and the Director of Social Services, this study was initiated with the hope that it would be a step toward providing an over-all and continuing assessment of information about the women receiving abortions. The researchers' particular area of interest concerned the characteristics …

Phrases Vs Meaning In The Immediate Recall Of Sentences, David Townsend, Eli Saltz Jan 1972

Phrases Vs Meaning In The Immediate Recall Of Sentences, David Townsend, Eli Saltz

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study evaluated Johnson’s (1965) measure of phrase independence in the recall of sentences. Twenty-five Ss were presented with groups of three sentences that differed in structure and were immediately asked to recall the sentences. Fewer errors were made on subject, verb, and object words for all sentence types, but the probability of a transitional error (TEP) at the phrase boundary was not always greater than at other transitions in the sentence. The results indicate that the TEP is a misleading measure and that sentence meaning is more appropriate as a unit of recall than is the sentence phrase. The …

Grooming Behavior And Competitive Dominance In The Albino Rat, Irwin M. Spigel, Susan Trivett, David Fraser Jan 1972

Grooming Behavior And Competitive Dominance In The Albino Rat, Irwin M. Spigel, Susan Trivett, David Fraser

Social Behavior Collection

An experiment sought to compare dominance manifested in water competition under two levels of deprivation, with grooming activity in a non-deprived state. While competitive dominance was significantly related to motivational level, grooming emerged as a more stable indicator of social ascendance, and did not require prior manipulation of a biological state. The implications of this observation for broader aspects of social motivation arc discussed.

A Study Of The Personality Characteristics Of Patients In Methadone Maintenance Programs, Robert J. Zielinski Jan 1972

A Study Of The Personality Characteristics Of Patients In Methadone Maintenance Programs, Robert J. Zielinski

Theses and Dissertations

Estimates of the number of heroin addicts in the United States vary between 200,000 and 500,000. Although differences of opinion exist as to the numbers of heroin addicts, there is little argument about the cost of supporting their addiction. Hundreds of millions of dollars are lost each year through criminal activities perpetrated to support addictions. No price can be assessed for the addict's misery, suffering, poor health, and even sometimes his untimely death.

A Validation Of The Psychologist's Narrative Report In Predicting "Successful" Bank Managers, Peter Stephen Horos Jan 1972

A Validation Of The Psychologist's Narrative Report In Predicting "Successful" Bank Managers, Peter Stephen Horos

Master's Theses

Although company selection procedures for managerial personnel vary widely, they frequently contract a psychological consulting firm to assess the applicant's potential. It was generally assumed then, that this professional information would significantly enhance the selection procedures and consequently improve the quality of the organization's managerial population. However, this assumption was made contingent upon the validity of the psychologist's predictions, with which there has been little research to date.

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim Jan 1972

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim

Master's Theses

Widely disparate findings concerning recognition and recall as indicants of retention have been reported by several independent researchers. To clarify the problem a list of 8 items, composed of letter-number pairs, was presented 5 times by the study-test method to 160 college undergraduates. The list was learned by either recognition or recall and then tested by either a recognition or recall test after 24 hour and 72 hour intervals. Ss were placed in 1 of 5 categories dependent upon the trial the S achieved 100% criterion. A 4 factor ANOV showed recognition scores to be significantly higher at the .05 …
