The Effects Of Positive And Negative Reinforcement On A Learning Task In Hospitalized Patients, Gary Robert Lancaster Jan 1968

The Effects Of Positive And Negative Reinforcement On A Learning Task In Hospitalized Patients, Gary Robert Lancaster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A number of writers have suggested that in comparison to normals, schizophrenics are less responsive to positive records or reinforcers (e.g., Hunt & Cofor, 1944) and overly sensitive to punishment or social censure as compared to normals (Fromm-Reichman 1954). Garmezy & Rodnick (1957) have proposed that schizophrenics are highly sensitive to any censure or disapproval, arising from their interpersonal contacts. They further say that such intolerable levels of anxiety are aroused that schizophrenics are held to be much more strongly motivated than normals to reduce the anxiety by acting to avoid or escape the censorious aspects of the situation.

Affective Responses To Environmental Influences In Immature Rats, William Rudolf Brunner Jan 1968

Affective Responses To Environmental Influences In Immature Rats, William Rudolf Brunner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation is to add to the growing body of knowledge about the behavioral development of rats. It is an enlargement of a study by Roberts (1966) who investigated the effects of quantitative reward shifts on the behavior of immature rats. Roberts' experiment was in turn founded on earlier experiments by Crespi (1942). These experiments tested the effect of different quantitative reward levels on the behavior of adult rats. These studies of Crespi are fundamental to the understanding of the present investigation and so are discussed below in some detail.

Crespi trained adult rats, one trail …

Classical Conditioning Of Shock-Elicited Fighting Behavior In Paired Rats, Jerry T. Treadway Jan 1968

Classical Conditioning Of Shock-Elicited Fighting Behavior In Paired Rats, Jerry T. Treadway

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment investigated the effectiveness of two methods of stimuli presentation in classically conditioning shock elicited fighting behavior in paired rats.

The results indicated that fighting responses occurred to the unconditioned stimulus (shock), however, at no time did a fighting response occur to any of the tone-alone test trials.

Therefore, it was concluded from the data in the present study that shock-elicited fighting in paired rats did not appear to be a behavior which could be classically conditioned using either a simultaneous or a random method of stimuli presentation.

Job Satisfaction In Relation To General Satisfaction And Personality, Elias E. Mina Jan 1968

Job Satisfaction In Relation To General Satisfaction And Personality, Elias E. Mina

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the idea that the personal characteristics of the worker and his general attitude toward his environment influence his attitude about his job. 101 public school teachers were administered five questionnaires to measure: overall job satisfaction with a job, degree of intrinsic job satisfaction, general satisfaction, neuroticism, and 18 personality variables. Results suggested that job satisfaction had a positive relation to general satisfaction and a negative relation to maladjustment. Overall job satisfaction and intrinsic job satisfaction were not related to each other and each related to a different set of personality dimensions.

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer Jan 1968

The Godbeite Movement: A Dissent Against Temporal Control, Grant H. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The approach of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 posed several real and imagined threats to the Mormon Kingdom in the Great Basin. The Pacific Railroad ended Mormon geographic isolation and brought economic competition from the States. The railroad also made it possible for miners to get to the gold fields faster and with the heave equipment necessary to make Utah mining profitable. Sensing the political problems and the social and moral evils that would accompany the railroad, the Mormon leaders, in hopes of meeting these problems, counseled to extend their economic goal of self-sufficiency. Through stepped-up cooperation and unity they …

Changes In Eeg, Temperature, And Behavior As A Function Of Prolonged Sleep Deprivation, G. Vernon Pegram Jr Oct 1967

Changes In Eeg, Temperature, And Behavior As A Function Of Prolonged Sleep Deprivation, G. Vernon Pegram Jr

Psychology ETDs

An experiment using 6 Macaca mulatta monkeys was conducted to determine the physiological and behavioral changes concomitant with 176 hours of sleep deprivation. The physiological changes were observed by recording EEG and cortical brain temperature continuously throughout 5 days of baseline, 8 days of deprivation and 8 days of recovery. Primarily behavioral changes were observed by performance on a delayed matched-to-sample task during which the Ss worked for food pellets. The rhesus has a definite stage 4 and PS recovery which was apparently critical in counteracting the stress of sleep deprivation. Further a stage 2 recovery was observed that had …

A Survey Of The Breakfast And Snack Habits Of Adventist And Non-Adventist Adolescents, Consuelo A. Bustista Oct 1967

A Survey Of The Breakfast And Snack Habits Of Adventist And Non-Adventist Adolescents, Consuelo A. Bustista

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A study was undertaken to survey by questionnaire and interview methods the breakfast and snack habits of Adventist and non-Adventist adolescents. The purposes of the study were: (I) to find out if there is any difference in the practices of Adventist and non-Adventist teenagers, and (2) to determine their attitudes toward snacking and omission of breakfast.

Results of the questionnaire were coded, punched onto IBM cards, and fed into computing machines for item and statistical analysis. Chi-square test analyses were done on denominational classification against some questions of interest to show any significant differences between Adventist and non-Adventist students' responses. …
