This form became popular in Spain in the 16th century and the tradition was carried on in Latin America. They were used to keep the audience occupied while waiting for the main event to begin, and they came in many forms for different purposes. The text of the present /oa indicates that it was used to commemorate the "Fiesta de Marfa y el Divina Sacramento".
