An Emic Conceptualization Of Veteran, “You're Either One Of Two Things; You're Captain America Or You're Broken”, Steven Wahle
An Emic Conceptualization Of Veteran, “You're Either One Of Two Things; You're Captain America Or You're Broken”, Steven Wahle
Theses and Dissertations
The Global War on Terror (GWOT) conflicts have been sustained by an all-volunteer force for over 20 years. There have been no drafts, war bond drives, nor rationing. This is a departure from previous prolonged military conflicts in U.S. history. Volunteers with veteran status are often venerated publicly to express gratitude for their voluntary military service. However, the criterion for veteran status is inconsistent.
In the U.S., former military members tend to be regarded on one of two ends of a spectrum as archetypes in attempts to honor such service. On one end is the veteran hero veteran to be …

Understanding Mental Health Provider's Experiences Of Burnout, Vicarious Trauma, And Vicarious Resilience From The Provider Perspective, Lauren Beheler-Romero
Doctoral Dissertations
The physical and psychological impacts on mental health providers as a result of burnout, vicarious trauma, and vicarious resilience have not been researched extensively. This study examined burnout and vicarious trauma among mental health providers in New Mexico given the high need population and low access to resources. This qualitative study, employed individual interviews, examined the lived experiences of seven mental health providers who are currently employed in the state of New Mexico in order to better understand the impact of burnout, vicarious trauma, and vicarious resilience. Inclusion criteria for participants included providing mental health services to children and families …
Themes In Help-Seeking Of Female Military Sexual Assault Survivors, Priscilla Phan
Themes In Help-Seeking Of Female Military Sexual Assault Survivors, Priscilla Phan
Doctoral Dissertations
While large efforts have been made to address military sexual assault, there are still barriers in the help-seeking journey that need attention. This study aimed to examine barriers and facilitators to formal and informal help-seeking behaviors and to understand the role of stigma in survivors' help-seeking behaviors for female military sexual assault survivors. Through semi-structured interviews, the study explored the help-seeking experiences and mental health sequela of fourteen female military sexual assault survivors. This study focused on cis-gender women over the age of eighteen who experienced a military sexual assault, by another military service member, while on active-duty. Women shared …
Housing Insecurity And Suicidal Behavior Among Transgender And Gender-Expansive Young Adults, Eleni Margareta Gaveras
Housing Insecurity And Suicidal Behavior Among Transgender And Gender-Expansive Young Adults, Eleni Margareta Gaveras
Brown School Theses and Dissertations
Transgender and gender-expansive people (collectively referred to here as trans) attempt suicide and experience homelessness at much higher-than-average national rates, signaling the need for culturally responsive support. Strikingly, over 50% of trans people with experiences of homelessness attempt suicide, and Black, Indigenous, Latine, and other persons of color exhibit even higher rates of suicidal behavior and homelessness (James et al., 2016). Although conceptual models of gender minority stress and multi-minority stress suggest suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) as an outcome of multilevel drivers, there has been little examination of structural determinants such as housing. A need exists for trans-affirmative research …
Service Dogs: A Catalyst For Post-Traumatic Growth Among Military Veterans With Ptsd, Matthew P. Knight
Service Dogs: A Catalyst For Post-Traumatic Growth Among Military Veterans With Ptsd, Matthew P. Knight
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The conclusion of the war in Afghanistan in 2021 has left a significant portion of veterans grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with estimates suggesting 23% of post-9/ 11 veterans are affected. Traditional psychotherapies, while effective, often see high attrition rates due to stigma-related barriers, underscoring the need for complementary approaches that resonate with the unique psychosocial needs embedded in military veteran culture.
Historically, research on psychiatric service dogs has focused predominantly on PTSD symptom alleviation. This conceptual article introduces a novel focus on their role in promoting positive psychological change known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), a topic that has …

Disparities Surrounding The Availability Of Feminine Hygiene Products In The Workplace, Marlene Ventura
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Menstrual inequality in the workplace continues to exist, affecting financial welfare, mental health, physical health, and access to care. Women have been enduring disparities related to menstruation, including stigma, shame, and period poverty, which are often exacerbated in the workplace. This study aims to explore the experiences of women who do not have access to free feminine hygiene products in the workplace.
The researcher conducted one-to-one interviews in person with employed women (n=9). The questions were semi-structured and based on a survey with nineteen questions addressing areas of menstrual inequality in the workplace. Seven themes were identified: 1) work performance, …

The Dissertation in Practice at Western University
This Dissertation-in-Practice (DiP) endeavours to address the intricate challenges embedded within police culture regarding their approach to responding to mental health alteration. Within the context of the Blue Virtue Police Service (BVPS; a pseudonym), the ramifications of mental health alterations among officers are profound and influence various aspects of the organization, such as sick leave utilization, leaves of absence, officer performance, community relations, and incidents involving the use of force. This DiP aims to tackle the specific problem of practice (PoP) question: What strategies can the BVPS adopt to encourage help-seeking behaviour and foster mental wellness among its officers? A …

A Response To “The Danger Of Ideology”, Amie Thurber, Ericka Kimball
A Response To “The Danger Of Ideology”, Amie Thurber, Ericka Kimball
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
On January 9, 2024, Social Work journal published in advance access a commentary by Farber and Fram titled “The Danger of Ideology: Social Work, Israel, and Anti-Semitism” (Farber & Fram, 2024). Writing following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, the authors lay out their central thesis in the opening paragraph: “We watch in horror and stand in support of Israel. As social work educators and scholars, we must also speak about the complicity of our profession in nurturing anti-Semitism and the ideology that undergirds Hamas and other terrorist organizations” (p. 1). This is a serious claim, and one that …

Impact Of Placement Disruption On School Outcomes In Maltreated Youth, Mallory Constantine
Impact Of Placement Disruption On School Outcomes In Maltreated Youth, Mallory Constantine
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
School attendance is a crucial component of a youth’s ability to access resources and attain educational success. Maltreated youth are at increased risk for school absences, poor school performance, impairment in cognitive processes, and development of psychopathology. Disruption from their known systems (i.e., family, social, school) as a result of removal from home creates unique and substantial barriers for maltreated youth in attending and engaging in school. The present study used a sample of maltreated youth and binomial logistic regression analyses to determine if the number of lifetime placements impacts school outcome variables of school attendance, classroom behavior, and academic …

Revitalizing The On-Campus Waste Bank: Promoting Community Environmental Awareness And Improving Waste Management Efficiency, Achmad Room Fitrianto, Ajeng Tita Nawangsari, Riska Agustin, Setia Rini Arista, Eka Nur Wahyu Safitri Ramadhani, Nadine Elizabeth Gibbons
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
Current waste management practices often lack the reduce, reuse, and recycle principles, leading to negative effects on public health and the environment. Comprehensive and integrated waste management is needed to achieve economic benefits, health for communities, and environmental safety. This study examines community-based sustainable waste management practices in academic institutions, thus bridging the theory-practice gap and providing a significant novelty through its integration of Sharia principles into waste management practices. It focuses on the revitalization of the Sharia-based Waste Bank (BSS) at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) in Surabaya, Indonesia, supporting the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and implementing …

From Steps To Strides: My Evolving Journey Into Social Work, Lacresha N. Ffrench
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This paper reflects on my journey, shaped by my heritage as a first-generation Jamaican-American and my experiences in education. The narrative begins with the story of my parents, Desmond and Pauline Ffrench, who immigrated from Jamaica with the hope of providing me with greater opportunities. Their sacrifices and unwavering support have been instrumental in my success. My career in education began in 2019, where I transitioned through various roles, from an educational assistant to the restorative practices coordinator. These experiences, coupled with my deepening commitment to advocating for students, led me to pursue a master's in social work. Encouraged by …
A Place To Rest My Soul: How A Doctoral Student Of Color Group Utilized A Healing-Centered Space To Navigate Higher Education, Jessica I. Ramirez
A Place To Rest My Soul: How A Doctoral Student Of Color Group Utilized A Healing-Centered Space To Navigate Higher Education, Jessica I. Ramirez
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Students of Color have historically faced explicit and implicit forms of discrimination and oppression in educational settings. Unfortunately, not much has changed over the decades as Students of Color continue to experience white supremacy and other systems of oppression. As Students of Color enter graduate school, there are often fewer Students of Color, making these educational settings isolating and hostile. These experiences often encompass white supremacist policies, practices, and remarks that negatively impact Students of Color. With this in mind and as someone who identifies as a Chicana who was once in a doctoral program, I questioned how doctoral Students …

Toward Queer Potentialities In Child And Youth Care, Bobbi Ali Zaman, Ben Anderson-Nathe
Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Arguably, from the invention of adolescence at the beginning of the 20th century, developmental theory has served as the foundation of disciplinary study and professional practice with children and youth across the global West. Despite their founders’ assertions that development is culturally constructed, in educational and youth work practice contexts stage-based trajectories of normative human growth are largely erroneously accepted as ahistorical, apolitical, naturally occurring, and universally applicable. This paper presents critiques of developmentalism from historical, reconceptualist, and queer perspectives, calling into question the underlying principles of normalcy and abnormality that run through the developmental project. We pay particular attention …
The Integration Of Social Work Values And Principles In Police Work, Dasha Rhodes, Taylor Geyton, Jam Ost
The Integration Of Social Work Values And Principles In Police Work, Dasha Rhodes, Taylor Geyton, Jam Ost
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Persisting social inequities and injustices were spotlighted in the United States in 2020 after the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. A particular focus on the interactions of police officers and non-violent community members rallied a call to reallocate funds to social services better equipped to handle such situations, aptly named #defundthepolice. Many called for the need and placement of social workers in police agencies to curtail the negative interactions witnessed between police officers and communities of color, specifically with Black Americans. Across the nation, social workers are not always employed or readily available in police organizations. Therefore, instilling …
