Divisive Or Descriptive?: How Americans Understand Critical Race Theory, Alauna Safarpour, Kristin Lunz Trujillo, Jon Green, Caroline High Pippert, Jennifer Lin, James N. Druckman

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has become a flashpoint of elite political discord, yet how Americans actually perceive CRT is unclear. We theorize that Republican elites utilized a strong framing strategy to re-define CRT as an “empty signifier” representing broader racial and cultural grievances. Using a survey and a pre-registered experiment among U.S. adults (N = 19,060), we find that this strategy worked. Republicans exhibit more familiarity with CRT and hold more negatively valenced (and wide ranging) sentiments toward CRT, relative to Democrats. Moreover, compared to teaching the legacy of racism in schools, Republicans are significantly more opposed to teaching CRT …

In this article, we share insights regarding an arts-based research project where carers of people with dementia conveyed their experiences in cloth. Carers face high rates of mental ill health and burnout, while forming a largely undervalued and unrecognised workforce. Through this project, carers’ knowledge was valued and amplified using an innovative methodology – craftivism. During a series of five workshops in 2021, a small group of carers, researchers and artists gathered online to develop an exhibition of craftivist textile works. An additional 1.8 billion people will be added to the world’s population by 2050. At the same time, average incomes are likely to rise. Data from the Groningen Growth and Development Center suggest that average real (inflation-adjusted) GDP per capita increased by a factor of fifteen between 1820 and 2018 and World Bank data indicate that real per capita GDP more than tripled over the past 62 years. There are no widely accessible and effective medical therapies to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias for the U.S. older adult population, making prevention of cognitive decline particularly important. Many social factors shape cognitive functioning, leading to disparities in cognitive functioning across groups and geographic areas. This data slice uses data from the Health Retirement Study to describe how cognitive functioning among adults ages 50+ differed by gender and across urban, suburban, and ex-urban areas in the U.S. from 1999-2016. The implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 marked a new chapter in global development and laid the foundations for addressing inequalities that hinder holistic progress. However, gender gaps pose a significant threat to achieving these goals. Project DREAM (Developing Resilience, Education, Aspiration, and Motivation) sought to explore women’s sense of aspiration, achievement, and lived experience in India, Syria, and the Philippines, as well as develop pilot interventions to address gender disparities. This longitudinal case study explored the academic identity and language socialization of a Chinese graduate student enrolled in an online religion course at a U.S. university during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected via online classroom observations, oral interviews, and artifacts. The theoretical framework was taken from language socialization and identity, together with positioning theory. This paper presents the lived experience of an intergenerational family, spanning three generations living with Facial Eye Disfigurement (FED). Living with vision loss and FED is estimated to affect nearly 8 billion people worldwide. Inadequate attention is paid to the impact of Living with FED (LwFED) on the lives of individuals. This research offers a deep dive into the lived experiences of one family LwFED. This family comprises a grandfather (deceased), son, wife, and child, all of whom have lived or live with FED. BACKGROUND: Nepal's low fertility rate and increasing life expectancy have resulted in a burgeoning older population. For millennia, filial piety shaped family cohesion and helped Nepali older adults achieve positive outcomes, but recently, it has been eroding. Furthermore, there are not enough institutional support options or alternatives to family-based care to deal with the biosocial needs of older adults. This study explored the association between family support and self-rated health among Nepali older adults.

METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey in eastern Nepal's two districts, Sunsari and Morang, interviewed 847 older adults (≥ 60 years). The final analytical sample was 844. …

UNLABELLED: We sought to explore the intrafamilial communication and cascade genetic testing (CGT) experiences of patients with hereditary cancer from diverse, medically underserved populations and their relatives. Participants included patients receiving oncology care at an urban, safety net hospital in Texas or comprehensive cancer center in Alabama and their first-degree relatives. In-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews were completed wherein patients shared their experiences with genetic counseling (GC), genetic testing (GT), and communicating their results to relatives. Relatives shared their experiences receiving information from the patient and considering CGT. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and themes were identified. Of 25 participating patients, most …

An introduction to the life and work of Robert Pagès (1919–2007), French social psychology researcher and theorist of documentation. From 1946 to 1948 Pagès was a student in the program in documentation directed by Suzanne Briet that later became the Institut National des Techniques de Documentation (INTD). A 1947 thesis was published in 1948 as an article entitled “Transformations documentaires et milieu culturel” (Documentary transformations and cultural context). It received little attention until recently. This research essay argues that W. E. B. Du Bois’s Crow from his magazine column “As the Crow Flies” is a figurative device for double consciousness and examines how aspects of double consciousness are present in the frequent motifs of dialectic doubleness in the column. Drawing from scholar Rudine Sims Bishop, this essay explores how the Crow functions as a mirror that children can use to realize their own double consciousness and thus see themselves. This insight into Du Bois’s news column provides a further understanding of the significance of accessible, multicultural children’s literature.

This research paper examines the role of the artisan food producer, not just as an entrepreneur and service provider but with a focus on how they contribute to the preservation of Ireland’s food culture and heritage. Using a qualitative methodology and in keeping with a phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of ten artisan food producers from different parts of Ireland. The Literary Gestalt Of The Restaurant Review, Anke Klitzing

European Journal of Food Drink and Society

The restaurant review is a quintessential form of gastronomic writing, but it has rarely been studied in terms of its literary form. This paper investigates the literary gestalt of restaurant reviews through a gastrocritical reading of two reviews by the Irish restaurant critic Helen Lucy Burke. It concludes that restaurant reviews typically include mimesis and evocative descriptions, a meal plot, inherent tension due to the performance character of the restaurant meal and incorporation anxiety, and a combination of phenomenological and ethnographic reporting. Background: The necessary execution of non-pharmaceutical risk-mitigation (NPRM) strategies to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 has created an unprecedented natural experiment to ascertain whether pandemic-induced social-policy interventions may elevate collateral health risks. Here, we assess the efects on violence against women (VAW) of the duration of NPRM measures that were executed through jurisdictional-level orders in the United States. We expect that stay-at-home orders, by reducing mobility and disrupting non-coresident social ties, are associated with higher incident reporting of VAW.

บทความนี้มุ่งศึกษาปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศ ใช้ระเบียบวิธีการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณ มีหน่วยวิเคราะห์ระดับปัจเจก กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศในจังหวัดชัยภูมิ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ประเทศไทย จำนวน 420 คน เก็บข้อมูลเมื่อเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2566 ด้วยแบบสัมภาษณ์ที่ผ่านการตรวจสอบความถูกต้องเชิงเนื้อหาและมีค่าความเชื่อมั่น 0.902 วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนาและสถิติถดถอยพหุคูณ ผลการวิจัยพบว่าแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศมีอายุเฉลี่ย43.6 ปี เป็นชาย ร้อยละ 56.2 และร้อยละ 33.1 จบชั้นประถมศึกษา มากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งไปทำงานต่างประเทศแบบถูกกฎหมาย ในกลุ่มประเทศเอเชียตะวันออก ร้อยละ 94.0 และร้อยละ 52.1 ย้ายถิ่นไปทำงานต่างประเทศเพียง 1 ครั้ง ซึ่งแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับส่วนใหญ่ มากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งเห็นคุณค่าในตนเองในระดับปานกลาง ร้อยละ 53.8 คาดหวังประโยชน์จากการย้ายถิ่นไปทำงานต่างประเทศระดับปานกลาง ร้อยละ 46.4 และแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับมากกว่าครึ่งหนึ่งสะสมทักษะชีวิตได้ในระดับปานกลาง เป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่า กว่าร้อยละ 40.0 สะสมทักษะชีวิตได้ในระดับต่ำ นอกจากนี้ พบว่า ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศ ได้แก่ เพศชาย จำนวนปีที่ศึกษา วิธีการย้ายถิ่นแบบถูกกฎหมาย จำนวนครั้งที่ย้ายถิ่น และการเห็นคุณค่าในตนเอง โดยทุกตัวแปรสามารถอธิบายการผันแปรของการสะสมทักษะชีวิตในสังคมสมัยใหม่ของแรงงานย้ายถิ่นกลับจากต่างประเทศได้ 32.6% (R-square = 0.326)
