Meridians: 21:1 Black Feminisms In The Caribbean And The United States: Representation, Rebellion, Radicalism, And Reckoning, Ginetta Candelario
Sociology: Faculty Books
As a scholar of Afro-Latinidades, it is a particular pleasure for me to offer Meridians readers this issue devoted to “Black Feminisms in the Caribbean and the United States: Representation, Rebellion, Radicalism, and Reckoning.” This curated conversation about Black feminist liberation strategies, which vary and move across time and place, is aptly illustrated with cover art by Haitian artist Mafalda Nicolas Mondestin, Ann fè on ti pale (The Meeting). Ann fè on ti pale is a Haitian Kreyol expression that means “let’s chat about it” or “we should chat” (pers. comm., August 29, 2021), and, apropos of that invitation, we …
Building Healthy Habits: A Wellness Program For Juvenile Detention Officers, Janaan R. Van Zante
Building Healthy Habits: A Wellness Program For Juvenile Detention Officers, Janaan R. Van Zante
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This paper focuses on the creation of a wellness program for the Snake River Juvenile Detention Center in Twin Falls Idaho and how it has started to make a positive impact on the juvenile detention officers at the facility. Wellness is something that detention officers take for granted. Most of the officers eat a lot of junk food and believe that lack of sleep and low energy levels are a normal part of being a juvenile detention officer. Juvenile detention officers work in an environment where they need to have empathy for the youth in their custody. Constant empathy for …
How Is Your Mental Health At Walgreens, Kelly Kukla
How Is Your Mental Health At Walgreens, Kelly Kukla
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
How Is Your Mental Health is based on the mental health of Pharmacy Technicians at a Walgreens near me. Recently there was an incident with the Pharmacy, that tested our staff. What was observed was that these employees were given only a phone number for support and a few days off. Off this observation it was believed this wasn't enough. By conducting a survey for each employee to fill out about their mental health anonymously to tell us how they actually feel while working for Walgreens. With information about how horrible the mental health has been, thee stress they feel, …
Capstone: Burn Surgery Education Module, Sophie J. Weber
Capstone: Burn Surgery Education Module, Sophie J. Weber
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
I chose to solve a training and continuing education problem in my workplace, by creating a manual on burn surgery. This manual will later be turned into a computer education module, but will always be available in a hard copy as a reference material. I had to find an approach that reflected how my peers wanted to be educated and on what education points they felt were the most important to their success in surgery.

Empty Nester Website/Blog Project, Lessa J. Tuffield
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
The basis of my capstone project is to build a website for Empty Nesters – Findin Me Again that includes blog stories that capture my journey. My major focus for the website is to provide support and encouragement to others who will become or are currently empty nesters. Empty nesters are parents whose children have grown up and left home. The project involves research on empty nest syndrome, website construction, blog writing, brands, and design. Research shows us that by taking care of ourselves by reconnecting with others, staying in touch with our children, and seeking support from others, we …
The Youth Closet: Connecting Those In Need To Those Who Care, Anastasia Webster
The Youth Closet: Connecting Those In Need To Those Who Care, Anastasia Webster
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
In order to ensure disadvantaged youth who come through the Juvenile Justice System have access to the common items needed by all individuals, a Youth Closet was created. This closet consists of donated items from staff and community members. Further, to effectively connect youth with these resources, I created a website that lists the available items. In addition, this website serves as a method to request specific items and find ways to contribute to the closet.

Capstone Project: The Spirit Of Play, Brooke W. Spencer
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Play is a powerful tool for self-care for people of all ages, yet most adults don’t use it enough. To help others cultivate more play in their lives, I created a blog called The Spirit of Play Blog. In the blog I discuss the importance of play and ways it can be incorporated into life. The blog also provided readers with a chance to reflect on play in their own lives and challenged them to play more and in new ways.

Ride the Wave (The Wave of Recovery) Leisure Time Activities is the title of a leisure time activities booklet that was created by Donnie Martin in partnership with Recovery in Motion (RIM, non-profit organization), as a resource to help reduce occurrences of addiction relapses in the Twin Falls community. The hope is that more recovering addicts will be successful in their recovery and transition into a recovery lifestyle becoming productive members of the Twin Falls community. The leisure time activities booklet is being distributed and edified to recovering addicts in recovery support groups by RIM support group facilitators and by …
Peer Support In Online Programs, Mary P. James
Peer Support In Online Programs, Mary P. James
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
The question of how to get online students to engage outside of the course curriculum is not a new problem, but it is one that became a higher priority after Covid-19 caused universities to change their learning models in Spring 2020. Peer-to-peer support programs can foster online student engagement and enable connections that benefit both the university department and the students. This paper overviews a service-learning project that sought to start building a framework for peer support based on perspectives from Boise State University Multidisciplinary students and the Multidisciplinary Department (also known as the Interdisciplinary Professional Studies Department). I used …
Extremism And Its Effects On Idaho Legislation, Steve D. Sutherland
Extremism And Its Effects On Idaho Legislation, Steve D. Sutherland
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
The Capstone Project covers, through documented interviews and insights, practitioners, journalists, and researchers that have endeavored to recognize and reconcile the effects of extremism in Idaho legislation. The referenced articles and academic journals also shed light on how this is not unique to the Gem State and how it is manifesting and evolving within the United States. This paper describes my approaches to researching this topic and the challenges of its polarization and political realities. I cover how creating an innovative approach can bring together different perspectives. Emotional intelligence is vital in exploring a hot-button issue such as this. Awareness …
How To Improve An Existing Training Program, Joseph Morgan
How To Improve An Existing Training Program, Joseph Morgan
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Increasing the effectiveness of any training program is an ongoing undertaking that may require refinement year after year. The purpose of this MDS Capstone Project is to increase the effectiveness of our agent community, as well as our internal staff, when it comes to identifying missing information during the implementation process of a new group that is being on-boarded for health insurance. Missing information, errors, and inaccurate information can lead to delays when on-boarding a new group. These delays may also lead to increase workloads, increased cost through employee’s having to work overtime, and upset customers. Restructuring this training program, …
Gardening Blog, Ashley Pierce
Gardening Blog, Ashley Pierce
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
For this project I chose to create a blog as a resource for new gardeners in the Southern Idaho area. I wanted to offer a free resource for people to be able to learn about something I enjoy, and share my knowledge and perspective with my readers. I found that many people do not know how to begin, and I wanted to offer an accessible resource for them to feel less intimidated and be successful in starting plants from seeds.

- Race and skin color
- National origin and ancestry
- Religion
- Disabilities
- Gender (including gender identify and expression)
- Sexual orientation
The Attorney General’s Office created the CRTP in 1996 as a pilot …
Counternarratives Of Color: Race In Queer Archiving, Sanjula Rajat
Counternarratives Of Color: Race In Queer Archiving, Sanjula Rajat
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research aims to better understand how race figures into the policies, processes, and materials at IHLIA LGBT Heritage, Europe’s largest LGBT-focused archive. By situating IHLIA within the broader history of alternative archives and Dutch homonationalism, the different ways in which race is an important consideration for the archive is examined. Particular attention is paid to the history, organization and location of the archive as well as the publicly funded nature of IHLIA to better understand the possibilities and limitations posed by the notion of an LGBT archive as opposed to a queer(ed) archive.
Natural Disasters And Domestic Violence?: A Study Of The 2015 Nepal Earthquake, Arpita Khanna, Tomoki Fujii
Natural Disasters And Domestic Violence?: A Study Of The 2015 Nepal Earthquake, Arpita Khanna, Tomoki Fujii
Research Collection School Of Economics
This study estimates the impact of exposure to the 2015 Nepal Earthquake on intimate partner violence with two rounds of Demographic and Health Surveys data. Using differences-in-differences estimation, we find that exposure to the earthquake lead to a statistically and economically significant increase in intimate partner violence in the urban areas but not in the rural areas. This is possibly due to an increase in the stress felt by the earthquake victims. We also offer some evidence that the impact heterogeneity between the urban and rural areas is attributable to the differences in the reconstruction processes and assistance provided.
The Theological Structure For Forming Christian Vocational Spirituality: A Practical Method For The Whole Of The Christian Life, Yong Sub Sim
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
The Christian church works for reconciliation between God and his creatures through Jesus Christ. For this, the church calls people and helps them hear, understand, recognize and receive the Spirit of God through Jesus. This dissertation explains this process as walking with, working with and following Jesus.
This dissertation builds a theological structure for forming “Christian vocational spirituality” as the whole of the Christian life reconciled with the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ. This theological structure guides the process through which a human being becomes a true Christian being, and a Christian being becomes a true human being reconciled …

The Quizzical Queerness Of A Generation Left Alone With Their Queries: How The Covid-19 Pandemic Has Affected Queer Trinity Students, Cj Donohoe
Senior Theses and Projects
This paper analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as it pertains to queer students at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Themes of a fuck-it mentality, increased time with family, and broader engagement with the LGBTQIA+ community on social media reinforced queer young people's identities, causing them to be more comfortable and confident in these identities. This research is a qualitative study of 10 queer-identified students at Trinity College and is grounded in theoretical frameworks by Judith Butler and Michel Foucault.
At The End Of The Day We All Want To Get High, Karolina Barrientos
At The End Of The Day We All Want To Get High, Karolina Barrientos
Senior Theses and Projects
The consumption of cannabis is nothing new to college campuses and with the legalization of cannabis in Connecticut, it will for certain continue at Trinity College. However historically research centered on cannabis has focused on its negative impacts and not on its benefits or its impact on positive experiences. In examining my habitus, Trinity College, through a sociological lens, I wanted to examine the interactions once builds on campus in relation to cannabis and uncover is it is racialized in any way. Trinity as inherent white supremacist institution, and the experiences of students of color often differ from their white …
Left At The Door Of Trinity- Community Based Organizations And Their Role In College Success At Trinity, Karolina Barrientos
Left At The Door Of Trinity- Community Based Organizations And Their Role In College Success At Trinity, Karolina Barrientos
Senior Theses and Projects
Community-based organizations, (CBOs) have given a specific subset of students opportunities for higher education. These organizations tasked themselves with providing students from historically marginalized backgrounds, typically students of color from lower social-economic statuses, the resources to access top-tier colleges and universities. This transactional trend can be identified in institutions like Trinity, a private liberal arts college that inherently upholds white supremacy and capitalism. In organizations streamlining students into these institutions, it eventually became clear that access to these organizations is not enough to ensure their success and clear implementation of college success was necessary. Leading me to my research question, …

Analyzing Alternative Spaces: Queer Social Networks And Notions Of Belonging In Morocco, Adam Griffin
Analyzing Alternative Spaces: Queer Social Networks And Notions Of Belonging In Morocco, Adam Griffin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Because of the presence of both legal and cultural discrimination in Morocco, the Moroccan queer community operates largely in secret and is unable to occupy public space. Additionally, the patriarchal structure of Moroccan society creates a culture of toxic masculinity that limits queer expression. This paper examines how queer Moroccans operate in the face of this discrimination. It also explores the extent to which alternative spaces, or spaces that subvert the norms and practices of mainstream society, contribute to the creation of LGBTQ+ social networks. Alternative spaces can be physical spaces—such as bars, cafes, and live music venues—or virtual spaces—such …

Duelos Incompletos: La Situación Actual Del Acceso A Servicios De Salud Mental Para Los Sobrevivientes Del Conflicto Armado En Ayacucho, Olivia Frison De Angelis
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Worrying In Cato Manor: A Case Study Analysis On The Influence Of Context, Samantha Garbus
Worrying In Cato Manor: A Case Study Analysis On The Influence Of Context, Samantha Garbus
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Social Causation theory states that social and economic circumstances cause people to be at a higher risk of mental illness (Lund 2011, p.1). South Africa has high inequality, with racial disparities prevalent in multiple indicators of socioeconomic status. Moreover, mental health in South Africa has often not been prioritized. This project aimed to assess how context impacts relevant aspects of mental health, such as worrying and the mind/body stress-response in Cato Manor. An additional theme of community beliefs on stress emerged from the interviews which is also presented.
For this project, I used a Mixed Methods-Case Study research design. I …
Desert Power: Exploring How Jordan Can Democratize Through Tribalism, Shahab A. Khan
Desert Power: Exploring How Jordan Can Democratize Through Tribalism, Shahab A. Khan
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This independent study project will analyze tribal institutions in Jordan to understand how conducive they are to democracy. In the wake of the Arab Spring and the collapse of many burgeoning democracies in the Middle East, it is important to find ways in which pro-democracy advocates can build strong democratic states in the Middle East. Democracy allows a polity to choose who rules them. Furthermore, it has proven that peopling living in a democracy live longer, more fulfilling lives than those who do not. Given Jordan’s unique history as a stable regime with a strong tribal tradition, the researcher has …
Step By Step: Understanding Perceptions Of Time And Space In Nepal, Lillian Norton-Brainerd
Step By Step: Understanding Perceptions Of Time And Space In Nepal, Lillian Norton-Brainerd
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Time and space are part of everyone’s daily life; however, these concepts are rarely explicitly discussed. Hegemonic interpretations of time and space are part of capitalist, colonialist structures, thus understanding alternative perceptions is important to resisting these structures. To understand perceptions of time in Nepal, I spent a month in Gre, a small village near Langtang National Park. I interviewed villagers and spent time observing how people spend their time, talk about time, and give directions to physical places. While there is not one perception of time and space, I learned how time and space influence each other. Geography and …
