(HDR) to conduct an intensive archaeological survey of the project area for the proposed improvements to the entrance to the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge located on Ranch-to-Market (RM) Road 1431 in Travis County, Texas (Figure 1-1). The survey was initiated due to the inadvertent discovery of a possible burned rock midden site within the project area during vegetation clearing. Oncor Electric Delivery Company, LLC is planning to construct the Riverton Sw. – Tunstill Point of Delivery (POD) and Arroyo Bluff POD 138-kV transmission line routes in Reeves County, Texas. Halff Associates, Inc., the routing consultant for Oncor, contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to conduct an intensive pedestrian survey of the 6.57 miles of new 138-kV transmission line on private property. Survey was conducted June 4-6, 2018. Seventeen shovel tests were excavated near drainages, where buried deposits were expected, and two 15-m transects were walked within the 70-ft-wide survey corridor (approximately 54 acres).

In April 2018, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archeological survey of 120 acres of land associated with the proposed Classen-Steubing Park and conservation easement in north-central San Antonio, Texas, under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 8404. The park location is north of Loop 1604 and just west of U.S. Highway 281. The full park development will cover about 204 acres. The western 84 acres of this were included in lands surveyed in 2017 for the Classen-Steubing Master Development Project, leaving 120 acres to be covered by this survey.

Austin State University (SFASU) (Figure 1). The proposed improvements would involve replacing 13 existing electric transmission structures with new structures. The replacement structures will be located within the existing Oncor right-of-way (ROW) that is approximately 100 feet (ft; 30.5 meters [m]) wide. This report documents the results of an intensive archeological survey carried out in advance of construction of a proposed U.S. Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient clinic on 25 privately-owned acres in the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Archeologists from AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra) visually inspected the entire Area of Potential Effects (APE) and excavated fourteen shovel tests in support of the survey. The City of Sanger is proposing to construct the 3.06-kilometer-long Sanger Outfall Pipeline in Denton County, Texas. Alan Plummer Associates, Inc. contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to survey a 100-foot-wide corridor along the proposed route. AR Consultants, Inc. hypothesized that there would be low potential for both prehistoric and historic cultural resources. These hypotheses were based on the location of the pipeline route in the narrow Ranger Branch floodplain and lack of mapped historic structures remaining in the project area. The overall project area includes 2.73 miles of pipeline construction within a 100-foot-wide corridor, for a total area of 33.09 acres. The project area lies approximately 16.9 km southeast of Rankin, Texas. At the request of the Port of San Antonio, Pape-Dawson conducted archaeological monitoring of the proposed flood improvements to Building 652 at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. These improvements consisted of construction of walls on the north, south, and west sides of the building to protect the structure from flooding episodes due to road surface run off. These walls are approximately 1,016 feet (ft) (310 meters [m]) in total length, 1 ft (0.30 m) in width, and 3 ft (1 m) in depth.

The proposed project will entail the modification of the creek channel for a distance of approximately 1,000 feet from just east of Bethune Avenue to just east of Blessing Avenue. This study expands upon a previous analysis of the Clarence H. Webb collection, which resulted in the identification of two discrete shapes used in the manufacture of the base and body of Smithport Plain bottles. The sample includes the Smithport Plain bottles from the Webb collection, and four new bottles: two previously repatriated specimens in the Pohler Collection, and two from the Mitchell site (41BW4) to test whether those specimens align morphologically with the Belcher Mound or Smithport Landing specimens. Results indicate significant allometry and a significant difference in Smithport Plain body and base shapes for bottles produced at the …

This collection contains photographs and papers related to Earl F. Dickinson’s personal life and time in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). The bulk of the collection relates to Dickinson’s service in WWII and includes combat photographs, portraits and group photos, certificates, and military records. Personal materials include a 1938 Marshall Commencement booklet, family photographs, a birth and death certificate, newspaper clippings, and a brief personal recollections about Dickinson. Also included are artifacts such as USMC pins and a stone taken from Mount Suribachi.

This essay reviews four books on the Progressive Era, and draws lessons from those books to help explain contemporary political events. It explores topics such as proportional representation, efficiency of service delivery, business-driven reforms, and voter heterogeneity. All of these books provide a meaningful understanding of cities in the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) and beyond. However, the issues and lessons from a century ago still challenge us today, so we may be in a new “Gilded Age” and headed toward yet another era of progressivism.

Of the more than 3 million Americans who deployed to Southeast Asia during the United States' involvement in the Vietnamese civil war, only some 7,500 were women. Thus, it seems reasonable that memoirs, novels, and film would privilege the male experience when remembering the Vietnam War. Yet in the aftermath of South Vietnam's collapse, Americans' memory of the war narrowed even further, equating the conflict as a whole to the male combat veteran's story. This synthetic literary review examines some of the more lasting works sustaining the popular narrative of Vietnam, one that was constructed, in substantial part, by veterans …

Institutional Theory And The History Of District-Level School Reform: A Reintroduction, Judith R. Kafka

In this chapter I make my case for the utility of institutionalism for historians of education, first by explaining institutional theory and how it has been applied to, and shaped by, the study of schooling, and then by applying new theoretical developments to district-level historical research using examples drawn from earlier chapters in this volume. Ultimately, institutional theory may help us to interrogate Tyack and Cuban’s notion of institutional change in schools, by elaborating on their construction of the change process through specific, embedded, settings, and by rethinking how we determine what “counts” as change in schools and districts.

Bison made their home on the Southern Plains for millennia. However, their migratory patterns began to shift in the 17^th and 18^th centuries. My research investigated what caused this drastic shift and how it had far reaching effects on the ecology of the Southern Plains. Using archives from two prominent Catholic priests, I began to piece together why the bison left the Southern Plains. Rather than focus on the Europeans as the main players, I instead focused on the Indigenous peoples, the animals, and the land as the centralized actors in this project. The primacy accorded individual civil and political rights is often touted as one of the United States' greatest achievements. However, mass incarcerations of indefinite duration have occurred consistently throughout U.S. history and have primarily targeted people of color. The dominant narrative insists that the United States is a political democracy and portrays each instance of indefinite detention in exceptionalist terms. This essay argues that the historical patterns of indefinite detention are better explained by recognizing the United States as a settler colonial state whose claimed prerogative to expand its territorial reach and contain/control populations over which it exercises jurisdiction inevitably …
