Indigenous Stewardship Should Be Central To Conservation Efforts, International Study Finds, Beth Staples
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Darren Ranco says Indigenous peoples should be part of land use decisions, including whether to expand the quarantine zone for the emerald ash borer in northern Maine. "We have to be at the table because proof is in the pudding," says the University of Maine associate professor of anthropology, chair of Native American Programs, and citizen of Penobscot Nation. "When Indigenous people are on the land and making decisions about land management, biodiversity increases."

Series 1: Family - Quotes
In this section, we have selected quotes that represent how Black residents in Maine view their family life. The quotes are taken from transcripts of the oral history project “Home Is Where I Make It”: African American Community and Activism in Greater Portland, Maine.” The interview subjects are all native to Maine or are longtime residents of Maine. The original intent of the “Home Is Where I Make It” project was to highlight Black residents’ history and struggle for community in southern Maine in both their formal organizational memberships and day-to-day activities. The interviews, however, unearthed a wealth …

The Changes In The Impact Of Presidential Impeachment: Nixon To Trump, Paige Diforte
The Changes In The Impact Of Presidential Impeachment: Nixon To Trump, Paige Diforte
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
The ability to impeach a sitting president is granted to Congress in the U.S. Constitution as part of the system of checks and balances. The process can have a wide scope of impact on our society and other political processes. This study analyzes the impeachment processes of Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump through the lenses of media coverage, changes in approval polls and the results of midterm elections. By identifying and comparing the emerging trends in each instance, a better understanding of the relationships between impeachment, its portrayal in the media, presidential approval and election results can be …

Understanding The Complexities And Origins Of Gun Violence In Chicago, Christopher Bilicic
Understanding The Complexities And Origins Of Gun Violence In Chicago, Christopher Bilicic
Senior Theses and Projects
This thesis attempts to re-think the way lawmakers, policy makers, and everyday Chicagoans look at and talk about gun violence in Chicago. I attempt to do this by taking a historical approach where Chicago's history of housing and police discrimination against its black communities is outlined. In doing this, I seek to show that many of the factors that are driving violence in the city's black neighborhoods - such as legal cynicism and concentrated inequalities - were created by this discriminatory past. Urban gun violence in Chicago is heavily concentrated in and driven by its black neighborhoods. After taking a …

Sheep Replace Pronghorn: An Environmental History Of The Mono Basin, Robert B. Marks
Sheep Replace Pronghorn: An Environmental History Of The Mono Basin, Robert B. Marks

And it tracks some of these alterations by tracking when and how sheep replaced pronghorns.
“Yes, Separation! No, Integration!” A Historical Analysis Of Black Nationalist Groups Across The Decades: From The Civil Rights Era To The Contemporary Era, John Mcgee
Undergraduate Research Conference
As tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets with the chants of “Black Lives Matter!” Or “hands up, don’t shoot” issues such as police brutality and institutional racism have once again been thrust into the national spotlight. The strength, longevity, and occasional violence associated with these protests have made Americans from all backgrounds aware of the demands of the protestors. Unsurprisingly, these recent protests, often concerned with issues of race and justice, have drawn comparisons to the powerful protests of the civil rights era. As a result of the success of the civil rights movement and leaders …
