Recollections Of A Danish Auctioneer, Erling Christensen
Recollections Of A Danish Auctioneer, Erling Christensen
The Bridge
I was born in Brush, Colorado, the 12th of August in
1906. I was the first child of Otto and Mariane Christensen
and ten more were to follow. I was called an "instrument
baby" according to my older cousin Bertha Pedersen, whose
mother was my Dad's sister. She said it was "sure touch and
go" as the ordeal left me black and blue in the face.
A Grundtvig In America, Thorvald Hansen
A Grundtvig In America, Thorvald Hansen
The Bridge
Frederik Lange Grundtvig was the third son of Nikolai
Frederik Severin Grundtvig. He came to America in 1881 at
the age of 27, spent less that 19 of his 49 years here, served in
only one pastorate and yet became one of the most controversial
figures among the Danish immigrants. Grundtvig
came to America a budding young scientist; he left as an
accomplished clergyman. He wrote numerous articles,
pamphlets and books, all which are buried in the Danish
language, but none of which have real significance for this
day. Beyond the Danish community his name is little known
today, yet …
My Life Has Been Worth Living, Agnes J. Jensen
My Life Has Been Worth Living, Agnes J. Jensen
The Bridge
North Americans, and especially those who are not Canadians, have only in recent years become aware of the Danish Canadian writer, Agnes Jelhof-Jensen. This in spite of the fact that she published her first book, Hallo Canada, in 1976.
What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
What Motives Drive Pornography Consumption, Charlotte R. Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Pornography use has become widespread and mainstream in American society, with estimates that 60% of men and 35% of women have viewed pornography at some time in the last year. Pornography use has been associated with both positive and negative outcomes depending on the user, and some of these conflicting results may stem from problematic measurement. Using a newly validated measure that assesses frequency, duration, arousal, and deliberate or accidental exposure to seven common types of pornography, we sought to understand if the motivations to view pornography differed depending on biological sex of the user and the type of use …
Spherical Objects Among The Fremont, Emily Crump
Spherical Objects Among The Fremont, Emily Crump
Theses and Dissertations
Rounded objects, such as spheroids, are frequently found throughout the Fremont region. Because little information is known about these spheroids, this comprehensive analysis of spheroids contributes to definitions of and variation among Fremont spherical objects. I analyzed over 400 Fremont spheroids recording the size, weight, stone type, and other quantifiable aspects for each spheroid. The provenience of spheroids highlights some of the patterns and variability within the Fremont world. I also compare ethnographic accounts of purposes of spheroids in hopes to develop a better understanding of the function of these objects.
Spared Perception Of The Structure Of Scenes After Hippocampal Damage, Zhisen J. Urgolites, Ramona O. Hopkins, Larry R. Squire
Spared Perception Of The Structure Of Scenes After Hippocampal Damage, Zhisen J. Urgolites, Ramona O. Hopkins, Larry R. Squire
Faculty Publications
To explore whether the hippocampus might be important for certain spatial operations in addition to its well-known role in memory, we administered two tasks in which participants judged whether objects embedded in scenes or whether scenes themselves could exist in 3-D space. Patients with damage limited to the hippocampus performed as well as controls in both tasks. A patient with large medial-temporal lobe lesions had a bias to judge objects in scenes and scenes themselves as possible, performing well with possible stimuli but poorly with impossible stimuli in both tasks. All patients were markedly impaired at remembering the tasks. The …
Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner
Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner
Theses and Dissertations
Increases in basolateral amygdala (BLA) activity drive avoidance-seeking behavior that may be associated with stress induced drug seeking. Activity of BLA pyramidal neurons is regulated by local and paracapsular gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons. The lateral paracapsular interneurons (LPCs) border the external capsule, receive dense cortical/thalamic input and provide feed-forward inhibition onto BLA principle neurons. The GABAergic LPCs also express high concentrations of g-protein coupled µ-opioid receptors (MORs). Therefore, the effects of opiates on LPC activity and local GABA release were examined. Fluorescently double labeled LPCs were observed in glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) 65-mcherry/GAD67-green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice. Whole-cell electrophysiology …
Establishment Of A Reliable Change Index For The Gad-7, Thomas Bischoff, Shayne R. Anderson, Joy Heafner, Rachel Tambling
Establishment Of A Reliable Change Index For The Gad-7, Thomas Bischoff, Shayne R. Anderson, Joy Heafner, Rachel Tambling
Faculty Publications
Aim: It is increasingly important for mental healthcare providers and researchers to reliably assess client change, particularly with common presenting problems such as anxiety. The current study addresses this need by establishing a Reliable Change Index of 6 points for the GAD-7.
Method: Sample size included 116 online community participants using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and archival data for 332 clinical participants. Participants completed measures of the GAD-7 and the MDI in 2 rounds. Using previously established cutoff scores and Jacobson and Truax’s (1991) method, we establish a Reliable Change Index which, when applied to 2 administrations of the GAD-7, …
Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy
Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy
Theses and Dissertations
Two projects are presented in this dissertation. First, we investigated the impact of false memories on the original trace and whether recovery of the original is possible. Second, we tested whether mnemonic discrimination for temporal duration is possible. Both projects incorporated fMRI techniques in order to implicate any potential neural correlates of these memory behaviors. Project One. To elicit false memories and study a potential recovery therefrom, thirty-five healthy, young adults performed multiple recognition memory tests where they were induced to make errors in a first test and then participants were tested again in a surprise, second test. These two …
Exploring Love In Family Relationships, Joe Meshach Chelladurai
Exploring Love In Family Relationships, Joe Meshach Chelladurai
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to qualitatively investigate love in religious family relationships. Participants were from the American Families of Faith Project, a qualitative study on religion and family life with participants from 198 Christian, Jewish, and Muslim families (N = 478) across the United States. The primary research questions of present study were (a) what does love mean for families? (b) why do individuals and couples in families love? (c) how is love experienced? (d) what are the related processes of love? (e) how does religion influence love in religious families? and (f) what are the reported outcomes …
Cognitive Demands Of Mothers Of Young Children In The Presence Of Emotional Distraction, Michelle Duersch
Cognitive Demands Of Mothers Of Young Children In The Presence Of Emotional Distraction, Michelle Duersch
Theses and Dissertations
Stress and parenting often go hand in hand, with high physical and emotional demands from children often coupled with pressures and responsibilities adults bear from work, school, and other involvements outside the home. Parents often prioritize their children's needs above their own physical, emotional, and social needs. While current literature addresses stress in mothers, it has yet to understand under what circumstances her children may modify her stress levels and whether her stress response, in turn, affects cognition. This study seeks to investigate the impact of such a taxing environment on mothers' stress and cognition using a challenging mnemonic discrimination …
Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Priviledge And Place: An Exploratory Study About Healthcare Bypass Behavior, Jorden Elizabeth Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Bypass, or utilizing healthcare outside of one’s community rather than local healthcare, can have serious consequences on rural healthcare availability, quality, and outcomes. Previous studies of the likelihood of healthcare bypass used various individual and community characteristics. This study includes measures for individuals and communities, as well as place-based characteristics. We introduce the social vulnerability of place index (SoVI)—a well-established measure in disaster literature—into healthcare studies to further explain the impact of place on healthcare selection behavior. Additionally, with the use of qualitative data, this study explains why people choose to bypass. By including each of these measures, this study …
The Effects Of Telehealth Training On Parents Of Children With Autism In Albania, Freskida Griffiths
The Effects Of Telehealth Training On Parents Of Children With Autism In Albania, Freskida Griffiths
Theses and Dissertations
The present study evaluated telehealth training with parents on techniques for working with their children with autism spectrum disorder in Southeastern Europe. The purpose of this study was to research the effects of telehealth training on the parents and the increase of mands on the children. The participants of this study included three mothers and three children, which totaled six participants. Parents were trained on how to increase functional communication in their child. Telehealth training was based on an effective training package called Behavior Skills Training (BST). BST consist of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. The resources needed for the …

Measuring The Multidimensional Construct Of Pornography: A Long And Short Version Of The Pornography Usage Measure, Dean M. Busby, Brian J. Willoughby, Hsin-Yao Chiu, Joseph A. Olsen
Faculty Publications
With the increase in the availability and usage of pornography, the research on the effects of pornography has also increased. This research has uncovered several controversies in the field regarding how pornography usage influences attitudes, sexual behaviors, and relationships. However, many of the measures of pornography are problematic as there is often little reliability and validity information for them and it is not clear that participants in these research studies are referring to the same types of materials when they answer pornography usage questions. Consequently, many of the research findings are suspect and it is crucial to develop reliable and …

Introduction—Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) displays variable progression trajectories that require further elucidation.
Methods—Longitudinal quantitation of atrophy and language over 12 months was completed for PPA patients with and without positive amyloid PET (PPAAβ+ and PPAAβ−), an imaging biomarker of underlying Alzheimer’s disease. Results—Over 12 months, both PPA groups showed significantly greater cortical atrophy rates in the left versus right hemisphere, with a more widespread pattern in PPAAβ+. The PPAAβ− group also showed greater decline in performance on most language tasks. There was no obligatory relationship between the logopenic PPA variant and amyloid status. Effect sizes from quantitative MRI data were …
The Whole Truth: The Denominational Press Versus The Secular Press, Jennifer Goldsberry
The Whole Truth: The Denominational Press Versus The Secular Press, Jennifer Goldsberry
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis compares the reporting from The Boston Globe versus The Boston Pilot regarding the evolving story of sexual abuse perpetrated by Catholic clergy in 2002. Across all the articles, quotes from clergymen and victims, respectively, are counted, word choice and article placement are evaluated, and a ratio between staff articles versus articles from outside news organizations is created. Opinion editorials written by staff are also included in the analysis. All of these topics combine to determine the fairness, accuracy, and balance represented in the reporting of both publications.
A Qualitative Look At College Students Perceptions Of Social Interactions In College Physical Activity Classes, David C. Barney, Teresa Leavitt
A Qualitative Look At College Students Perceptions Of Social Interactions In College Physical Activity Classes, David C. Barney, Teresa Leavitt
Faculty Publications
Physical activity (PA) has been found to benefit a person in many ways. One of the benefits of being physically active is the social component. This deals with interacting with someone before, during or after the activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social interactions effects on college-aged students during their PA class. Participants for this study included 408 college-aged students (272 males & 136 females) who were surveyed regarding their interactions during their PA class. The survey contained Likert scale questions and open-ended questions, requiring the students to respond with written answers. In short, …
