The first encounter was between Byzantium and the Islamic World in the 9th and 10th century; the second was the interaction between the West and Islam in the 12th century, and the third was between European missionaries and China after 1400. His conclusion is that despite cross-pollination in various areas, the basic features of the Islamic and Chines cultures …

Chess Game Of Civilizations, Ambassador Sallama Shaker

Comparative Civilizations Review

The theory of civilization clash is applied to the situation in the Middle East which appears to be more the result of intra-regional rivals. The latter would include the Sunni-Shiite rivalry and the competition between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Currently, Syria is the overt demonstration of these intra-regional rivalries.

Goal Setting And Goal Achievement In Marathon And Half-Marathon Runners, Adam M. Fulton, Jared Richardson, Kyler Griffith

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

In this study, we looked at how different variables predicted goal specificity, goal achievement, and finish time for marathoners and half-marathoners. These variables had to do with experience, confidence, and motivation for running, as well as goal specificity. Among the results was the finding that goal specificity was predictive of finish time for half-marathoners and close to predictive for marathoners. These findings could help runners prepare better for races.

Depression, Religiosity, And Parenting Styles Among Mormon Adolescents, Courtney Kinneard, Mark Ogletree

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

We examined how religiosity and the parent-child relationship are associated with depression in 12-14 yr old teenagers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint. A random sample of 493 revealed three correlations: girls who have a strong connection with their mother have a negative correlation with depression; daily spiritual experiences are negatively correlated with depression, and negative religious coping is positively correlated with depression symptoms.

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, And The Reasons We Blame Victims, Jason B. Whiting Apr 2017

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, And The Reasons We Blame Victims, Jason B. Whiting

Faculty Publications

In May of 2016, actress Amber Heard accused her husband Johnny Depp of hitting her with a phone and assaulting her. She posted pictures of injuries to her face and filed for divorce. This ignited an ongoing debate between Heard and Depp, which has continued with personal accusations and bitterness. When the story appeared, outsiders chose sides and complete strangers weighed in online with certainty about what happened and who was at fault. Some comments blamed him: “I believe her. He's the idiot that didn't do a prenup. Get that money girl.” Even more attacked her: “She's lying! The police …

Look Before You Leap: 4 Questions Every Woman Should Ask While Job Searching, Hannah Y. Olvera

Marriott Student Review

Despite women’s preparation and effort during the job searching process, women are disproportionately dissatisfied with their employers. According to a Crain’s Report conducted in 2016, 42 percent of women left because they “didn’t feel recognized and didn’t see opportunities for advancement,” 43.6 percent believe their compensation is less compared to their male peers, and only 50.4 percent believe their companies have a fair family leave policy. To overcome these challenges, women must ask various questions to lead them to their ideal career from an equal opportunity employer. As women become more assertive in their job searching, they will create a …

Similarities And Differences In The Influence Of Paternal And Maternal Depression On Adolescent Well-Being, Kevin Shafer, Brandon Fielding, Douglas Wendt

Faculty Publications

Depressed parents may negatively influence the well-being and outcomes of their children. However, prior research has mostly addressed mother's depression and early childhood outcomes, whereas fathers and adolescents have been largely ignored in the literature. Using data from the sixth grade and age 15 waves of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, this study addresses similarities and differences in the influence of paternal and maternal depression on adolescent behavior. Results from structural equation models showed that paternal depression had direct effects on both internalizing and externalizing …

Reevaluating The Constitutionality Of Blanket Primaries, Soren J. Schmidt Apr 2017

Reevaluating The Constitutionality Of Blanket Primaries, Soren J. Schmidt

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

I argue that the Supreme Court’s ruling in California Democratic Party v. Jones should be reconsidered and overturned, allowing states to adopt blanket-primary election systems. Given the crucial role that primaries play in the public process of elections, parties’ rights of association should not trump the right of the people to select their own representatives. In Jones, the Court applied a stricter constitutional test than necessary, leading to an erroneous conclusion. I demonstrate why a more flexible test would have been more appropriate for judging primary elections. Under this alternative test, public state interests are weighed against party rights injuries. …

Child Prisoners: Asylum-Seeking Detainees In The U.S. And The Violation Of The Flores Settlement Agreement, Miriam L B Sweeney Apr 2017

Child Prisoners: Asylum-Seeking Detainees In The U.S. And The Violation Of The Flores Settlement Agreement, Miriam L B Sweeney

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Flores Settlement Agreement allows for asylum-seeking minors to be released from detention if the minors are in unsafe circumstances. Children are experiencing physical and mental harm in asylum-seekers’ detention. This harm constitutes a lack of safety. Therefore, the current conditions of detention for asylum-seekers violate the Flores Settlement Agreement.

Abstinence-Only Sex Education On Trial, Kendall W. Orton Apr 2017

Abstinence-Only Sex Education On Trial, Kendall W. Orton

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Title V abstinence-only sex education funds are used to fund programs that do not reduce sexual activity, STDs, or pregnancy in high school students, contrary to the purported goals of public school sexual education. This paper outlines the history and legal and social research regarding sexual education. It also argues that comprehensive sex education does not violate the Establishment clause or Free Exercise clause by applying the Lemon doctrine. This paper advocates that the United States government should only fund comprehensive sexual education models that have shown positive results and promote healthy attitudes about sex.

Leaving Behind Self-Righteousness: Using Mutual Respect And Compromise To Solve Emerging Conflicts Between Religious Liberty And Same-Sex Marriage, Benjamin Issa Apr 2017

Leaving Behind Self-Righteousness: Using Mutual Respect And Compromise To Solve Emerging Conflicts Between Religious Liberty And Same-Sex Marriage, Benjamin Issa

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper attempts to provide a reasonable framework for thinking about religious liberty issues following the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Following the decision in that case, which requires states to wed same-sex couples, there has been a national debate about when - and if - religious business owners can discriminate based on sexual orientation. This issue pits religious liberty organizations against LGBT rights organizations, and leaves both sides feeling demonized and misunderstood. This paper advocates a more nuanced approach, and suggests that reasonable compromise is possible if we are willing to leave behind self-righteousness and instead engage …

Death And Dignity, Michael Gardner Apr 2017

Death And Dignity, Michael Gardner

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper discusses the contemporary debate over physician-assisted suicide and focuses specifically on Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. Because the majority of the states have yet to pass legislation on physician-assisted suicide, the greatest debate over the legality of euthanasia is yet to come. This paper addresses the arguments for and against physician-assisted suicide with the purpose of educating the reader regarding the social, moral and ethical consequences of allowing or denying its practice.

Workplace Discrimination And The Inefficiency Of The Ellerth/Faragher Defense, Kimberly F. Medina Apr 2017

Workplace Discrimination And The Inefficiency Of The Ellerth/Faragher Defense, Kimberly F. Medina

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This article addresses the growing problem of workplace discrimination. Even though a few states have implemented laws requiring employers to train their employees on workplace discrimination, the number of discrimination claims has continued to rise each year. In 1998 the Supreme Court ruled on two important cases regarding workplace discrimination. Their opinion on these cases established what is known as the Ellerth/Faragher defense. The Ellerth/Faragher defense sets standards that an employer must meet to claim affirmative defense in cases of illegal discrimination. This article argues that the current standards set in this defense are flawed and need to be updated. …
