Grundtvigian Danish-Americans - A Story Of Preservation And Renewal Of Cultural And Religious Traditions, Henrik Bredmose Simonsen

The Bridge

grant from the Grundtvig Centre at Aarhus University enabled me in 2010 to visit several small towns in the American Midwest, where Grundtvigian institutions and traditions have played and still play a role. The trip was part of the research project "Integration, Identity and Narrative among Grundtvigian Danish-Americans," which Skanderborg Museum launched in 2009.

Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling Jan 2011

Seeking For The Lost: A Papyrological Search For Luke Fifteen's Lost Economics, Erik Yingling

Student Works

This paper draws upon Egyptian documentary papyri in order to show more fully the quantitative purchasing power of items of economic significance in Luke 15. Specifically, the stories of the lost drachma, lost sheep, and prodigal son each mention economic items which—when compared with the papyrological data—can more fully elucidate areas of economic import which have not been looked at before. In doing so, the article builds upon, and supports, the framework of Roman economic "middling groups" as posited by Longenecker (2009). Furthermore, a close look at Luke 15 when compared with the Egyptian papyrological data suggests the possibility of …

Paradigmatic Peer-Pressure: Word-Medial, Syllable-Initial /S/ Lenition In Dominican Spanish, Earl K. Brown

Usage-based phonology (Bybee 2001, 2006, 2010), which is based on exemplar theory (Pierrehumbert 2001, 2003), proposes a memory capacity so expansive that, in theory, all tokens experienced in life could be mapped onto their respective exemplar clouds. However, if a token is similar enough to an existing one, it is simply mapped directly onto that existing token, reinforcing it in memory. This model proposes a very limited need for generative rules to produce the surface form, as the surface forms themselves are stored whole in memory and therefore can be directly accessed during production. It follows that derived words need …

Christian Hansen, Eventyrmanden-The Fairy Tale Man, And The Jutland Storyteller Tradition, Erik S. Hansen

The Bridge

Christian Hansen is a name known to many who are familiar with the original Danish colony of Danebod, in Tyler, in southwest Minnesota. Founded in 1886, the congregation now in 2011 celebrates its 125th anniversary year. Eventyrmanden-the Fairy Tale Man, as he was known, was associated with Danebod during the first fifty years of the settlement. Initially as one of the early pioneers, then in a continuing presence as a kind of "storyteller in residence" at the Danebod Folk School and Children's School, Christian Hansen was often called on to entertain young and old alike with enchanting tales from lands …

Religion And Integration Among The Danish Immigrants In The Us 1848-1914, Marianne Sletten Paasch Jan 2011

Religion And Integration Among The Danish Immigrants In The Us 1848-1914, Marianne Sletten Paasch

The Bridge

One of the most controversial social issues in the western hemisphere today is the integration of immigrants into a host society. The problems appear to be many and the solutions few. In Denmark we have had a long and at times heated debate about immigrants, their integration into Danish society and their religious practices - including how religion can influence the integration process of immigrants. During the last 10 years this "problem" has made headlines over and over again and has often greatly influenced the decision making process of our parliament. But we are not alone. The "integration problem" exists …

Danish Emigration: Using Private Letters As A Source - Two Examples, Pernille Buchholtz Jan 2011

Danish Emigration: Using Private Letters As A Source - Two Examples, Pernille Buchholtz

The Bridge

During the research for my master's thesis in history at the University of Copenhagen, I was fortunate to be able to visit the Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Hom, Iowa, and the Danish American Archive and Library in Blair, Nebraska. My quest was made possible by the Bodtker Grant from the Danish American Heritage Society, which I was lucky to receive. This article captures the essence of the purpose of my thesis: to examine the assimilation of four Danish women by using their private letters. My thesis was contextualized by a chapter describing Danish emigration at length and, more importantly, …

You Can Lead Them To Water, But You Can’T Make Them Drink: Using Crowd Sourcing To Lead Library Patrons To Extended Library Services Relevant To Their Search Criteria, William B. Lund, Chad Hansen

Faculty Publications

The Lee Library at Brigham Young University has extensive resources in the forms of highly skilled subject librarians, print resources and digital collections, but getting the students to be aware of and use them effectively is a problem. To help inform library patrons of these resources librarian subject specialists have created over 150 subject guides using LibGuides for subject areas, classes, and some subspecialties, which was an enormous task; but are these resources being used effectively? This paper explores and reports on a subject guide recommender system, which recommends relevant subject guides based on patron searches, using a crowd sourced …

Ethnic Identity And Personal Well-Being Of People Of Color: A Meta-Analysis, Timothy B. Smith, Lynda Silva Jan 2011

Ethnic Identity And Personal Well-Being Of People Of Color: A Meta-Analysis, Timothy B. Smith, Lynda Silva

Faculty Publications

This meta-analysis summarized research examining the relationship between the constructs of ethnic identity and personal well-being among people of color in North America. Data from 184 studies analyzed using random effects models yielded an omnibus effect size of r = .17, suggesting a modest relationship between the two constructs. The relationship was somewhat stronger among adolescents and young adults than among adults over age 40. No differences were observed across participant race, gender, or socioeconomic status, which findings support the general relevance of ethnic identity across people of color. Studies correlating ethnic identity with self-esteem and positive well-being yielded average …

Introductiom, Egon Bodtker, Gerald Rasmussen Jan 2011

Introductiom, Egon Bodtker, Gerald Rasmussen

The Bridge

This article contains the first four chapters of Arnold Bodtker' s autobiography. When preparing the autobiography for publication we decided that these chapters offered a significant piece of local history which deserved to be printed independently of the complete work. It tells a "coming of age" story that is an insightful and valuable contribution to the understanding of rural life in general, and Junction City, Oregon, in particular, from Arnold's birth in 1904 until his high school graduation in 1923.
