Professional Books -- Competence, Courage, And Change: An Approach To Family Therapy By D. B. Waters And E. C. Lawrence, Dean M. Busby
Faculty Publications
In this book Waters and Lawrence present a model of family therapy that is refreshing and informative. They use principles from strength-focused paradigms without ignoring pathology. They call this emphasis "healthy intentions, unhealthy outcomes." In an innovative way Waters and Lawrence help clients uncover the competent strivings underlying pathological behaviors. Once these strivings are uncovered, the therapist and client can work together to find effective ways of reaching goals without engaging in destructive behaviors. Rather than ignore pathology and thereby negate clients' experiences, or overemphasize pathology and remove hope, the authors use pathology as the vehicle to understand the inner …
Nels C Nelson: Danish-American Archaeologist, Kathleen Nielsen Carlson
Nels C Nelson: Danish-American Archaeologist, Kathleen Nielsen Carlson
The Bridge
There have been many Scandinavian immigrants who have left their hearts in the great American Southwest. Nels Christian Nelson, a Danish-American pioneer whom the Curator of the American Museum of Natural History chose "as one of the eight characters who shaped American archaeology"1 was one of them. What captivated this impoverished Danish teen-ager in the United States and finally in the arid high deserts of New Mexico? ·Perhaps a review of Mr. Nelson's life will paint a clearer picture of this adventuresome, intelligent Danish-American.

N.F.S Grundtvig's Idea Of Folklore: Resurrecting Folk-Life Through The Living Word, Gregory Hansen
The Bridge
In Danish settlements throughout the United States,
Jmmigrants often formed reading clubs within which their
members could read, discuss, and circulate recent Danish
publications. One such club, the "Tolvten" (The Dozen),
was founded in Chicago in 1897 and remained in existence
until 1977.
Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt
Impediments To The Cultivation Of The Folk School Spirit In A North American Context: The Case Of Grand View College, Dennis Bielfeldt
The Bridge
In the 1995-96 academic year Grand View College will
celebrate its first hundred years of life. In anticipation of
this milestone, suggestions have been made to designate
1994-95 the "Year of Grundtvig," and to formally observe
with the entire Grand View community the influence of
the great Dane upon the college and its educational philosophy.
What, after all, could be more fitting for a college
whose most recent Academic Mission Statement proudly
declares its founding "by Danish immigrants who sought
to give the educational vision and ideals of N.F.S.
Grundtvig an institutional presence?"
Some Reflections Of My Life: An Account Of Mission Work Among The Cherokee, Abelone Larsen
Some Reflections Of My Life: An Account Of Mission Work Among The Cherokee, Abelone Larsen
The Bridge
Editor's Introduction
In 1892, at the invitation of a Danish immigrant who had married a Cherokee woman in what was then Indian Territory, the Danish Lutheran Church Association sent a student from Trinity Seminary in Blair, Nebraska, to investigate the possibility of doing mission work among the Cherokee. The student, Niels Laurits Nielsen, returned in the summer of 1893 and began working among the Cherokee, eventually founding a school and a church at Oaks, Oklahoma. The Oaks mission became one of the most important missions of the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church (later the UELC) and continues as an institution …
The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj
The Building Of Immanuel Lutheran Church In Kimballton, Iowa, Jeanette Lillehoj
The Bridge
Coming into the small Iowa town of Kimballton from any direction, the spire of Immanuel Lutheran Church, which stands on a high point in the town, is clearly visible. The early Danish immigrants who built this church intended the church spire to be a beacon to those entering the town. The centennial of Immanuel Lutheran Church will be celebrated in 1997. To those Danish immigrants who were responsible for building this church, this article is dedicated.

Parliament in Copenhagen at that time.
Quechua Texts Of Perception, Janis B. Nuckolls
Quechua Texts Of Perception, Janis B. Nuckolls

Recent work by anthropologists, folklorists, and semioticians has made significant strides in our understanding of the dynamics and poetics of spoken utterances. Such work has been motivated, generally, by the goal of understanding verbal expression in terms of its own unique structures and expressive modalities. The following paper will contribute to this line of inquiry. It offers an analysis of a form of expression, sound symbolism, that is widely used by people whose languages have not been written down. The main advantage of this analysis is that it rescues sound symbolism from the irrational abyss into which it has often …
Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks
Structural Ambiguities And Written Advertisements: An Inventory Of Tools For More Resourceful Advertisements In English, Dallin D. Oaks
Faculty Publications
Competent writers usually avoid ambiguity, but there are some types of writing tasks such as advertising in which a writer might actually want to create ambiguous wordplays. Among the most interesting of the wordplays are those which involve structural ambiguities. In the natural course of brainstorming, advertisers will occasionally generate structural ambiguities, but a more conscious understanding of the structure of a language could make the generation of such ambiguities easier. The English language contains some characteristics and patterns which contribute significantly toward creating structural ambiguities. And if ad writers know where to focus their attention, structurally ambiguous wordplays can …
The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart
The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart
Faculty Publications
As teacher training institutions have adopted the NAEYC standards for developmentally appropriate practices (hereinafter DAP) (Bredekamp, 1987) and have begun to routinely train pre-service teachers in these principles the need for student teaching experiences which reflect this orientation has become a priority for many teacher educators. However, locating developmentally appropriate placement settings, particularly when large numbers of student teachers are being trained simultaneously, may be difficult in some localities.
The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington
The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington
Faculty Publications
A psycholinguistic experiment aids in determining if the phonological generalizations which appear in the literature on Spanish phonology are psychologically significant for Spanish speakers. The experiment focuses on whether common phonological alternations play a role in native speakers' perceptions of whether two words share a morpheme. The results indicate that they are a significant factor in speakers' perceptions of morphemic relatedness. Therefore, these findings provide some evidence that these phonological generalizations are psychologically valid, and not merely descriptive in nature.
A Qualitative Study Of Interpretive Communities Among Lds Women, Oleah Clegg
A Qualitative Study Of Interpretive Communities Among Lds Women, Oleah Clegg
Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies have shown that a number of researchers have turned to the concept of the interpretive community to explain how audiences interpret the media within the context of their everyday experiences (Biocca, 1989; Gunter, 1989; Lindlof, 1989, 1992; Radway, 1984; Schrøder, 1994). D. A. Stout (1993) conducted a study that discovered three interpretive communities among LDS women who watch television, establishing that interpretive communities do exist among religious media audiences.
In 1994, K. Schrøder showed that the interpretive community can be further understood by taking a "social semiotic" approach to analyzing interpretive community members' social interaction with other communities. …
Adolescents' Use Of Discretionary Time: A Time Use Study Of The Central Utah Area, Rebecca Hirschi
Adolescents' Use Of Discretionary Time: A Time Use Study Of The Central Utah Area, Rebecca Hirschi
Theses and Dissertations
This study provides Central Utah school and recreation leaders with local data on which to base their program development by collecting and analyzing data on adolescents' use of time, and to compare local statistics with national data. The research included participants from Nephi, Spanish Fork, and Provo schools. Each participant completed 7 days of a leisure time diary, which detailed daily activities. Single sample t-tests on the data revealed that Central Utah adolescents' time use is significantly different from national statistics. The differences in the statistics indicate that school and recreation leaders need local data on which to base adolescent …

General Diagnosis Of Salitrón, A Village In San Juan Ermita, Department Of Chiquimula, Fredy Samuel Coronado López
Theses and Dissertations
This study reports on the development of a diagnostic tool to assess the current socio-economic and cultural conditions as well as physical and natural resources among the rural communities of Salitrón and San Juan Ermita, Chiquimula, Guatemala. This diagnostic tool revealed the current situation in these communities, especially in the population dedicated to agricultural production. Several alternative recommendations are provided to improve development projects in these communities. This project was made possible through the participation of CUNORI (Centro Universitario de Oriente) agricultural students.
