Asean's Weak Role In Bilateral Dispute Settlement: The Case Of Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan), Gabriela Steinemann Jan 2013

Asean's Weak Role In Bilateral Dispute Settlement: The Case Of Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan), Gabriela Steinemann

Asian Review

This paper examines the role of ASEAN in the resolution of territorial conflicts between its member states. It studies the border dispute cases of Vietnam-Cambodia and Indonesia-Malaysia, before turning its focus to the Thai-Cambodian conflict over Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan).1 The domestic political contexts in both countries provided important reasons for the weak role ASEAN has been able to play. But the associations struggle to find a meaningful place in dispute settlement is not limited to Preah Vihear, and it will likely continue as long as member states are unwilling to make use of the mechanisms they once created. At …

Urban Heat Island Phenomenon In Relation To Land Use/Land Cover In Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Area, Parinya Chayapong, Songkot Dasananda

Applied Environmental Research

The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon can be found in the megacities around the world where near-surface temperatures over the city core area were notably higher than those over the surrounding rural area. Intensity of the UHI phenomenon (\inline \DeltaT) was usually measured by the temperature differences between urban locations and some refereed rural sites. This situation was resulted mainly from the presence of dense builtup elements, e.g. commercial buildings or houses, as well as human activities that tended to release considerable heat into atmosphere. At present, the UHI monitoring can be done efficiently by using satellite-based thermal infrared (TIR) …

Cultural Commercialization To Keep Indigenous Cultures Alive In Ifugao Society, The Philippines, Anniken Renslo Sandvik Jan 2013

Cultural Commercialization To Keep Indigenous Cultures Alive In Ifugao Society, The Philippines, Anniken Renslo Sandvik

Asian Review

This paper argues that commercialization of indigenous cultures may contribute to their continued survival. This is based on the findings from a case study in Ifugao, Philippines. Because of various factors like the conversion to Christianity, the adaptation of national systems of government and education, and the introduction of international mass media, the indigenous Ifugao cultural practices are vanishing. In an attempt to revive these practices, the municipal and provincial governments in Ifugao are arranging annual festivals showcasing indigenous culture. In this process Ifugao culture is commercialized, as the indigenous practices are being performed out of their original contexts as …

Scenarios Of Gloregionalization And Post-Globalization In The Beginning Of The 21st Century: The Bric Forum, Juan Gonzalez Garcia

Asian Review

The BRIC Forum (Brazil, Russia, India and China) has projected itself from a simple term that groups together a series of countries that share the quality of having emerging economies, to a category of analysis used in order to comprehend an actor in economic and political international relations that can generate a counterbalance to the unipolar structure under the hegemony of the United States. The new facets of globalization and regionalism have boosted a series of centripetal forces that shake the foundations of the old world order inherited during the post-Cold War era, threatening to shape new spaces of cooperation, …
