Working Conditions And Psychological Distress In First-Year Women Teachers: Qualitative Findings, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Elizabeth A. Santiago Jan 1994

Working Conditions And Psychological Distress In First-Year Women Teachers: Qualitative Findings, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Elizabeth A. Santiago

Publications and Research

With few exceptions (e.g., Blase, 1986), most of the research on the effects of teachers' working conditions has been quantitative in design. The power of qualitative research inheres in its struggle to get under the teacher's skin and see the world as the teacher sees it. The study described in this paper examines the writings of newly appointed teachers who, as part of a quantitative study, were asked to write anything they wanted about their jobs. Four themes that characterized the working lives of teachers emerged: (a) being happy with one's job, (b) interpersonal tensions and lack of support among …

Untruth In The Classroom, John A. Drobnicki Jan 1994

Untruth In The Classroom, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

Although historical revision is a valid practice, Holocaust revisionism is based on deliberate fabrications of the historical record and does not reinterpret a past event. The author believes that Holocaust revisionist materials should not be ignored by teachers, but should be used in classrooms as primary source material on anti-Semitism and intolerance.

Implementation Of Congressional Intent: A Study Of Amnesty Policy And The Immigration And Naturalization Service, Sherrie Baver, William Arp Iii Jan 1994

Implementation Of Congressional Intent: A Study Of Amnesty Policy And The Immigration And Naturalization Service, Sherrie Baver, William Arp Iii

Publications and Research

In 1990, the United States Border Patrol arrested approximately one million illegals (Dillin, 1990). Significant as this number may seem, it parallels the rate of arrest that existed prior to the passage of the Immigration and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA). This phenomenon suggests that the Act has failed to accomplish one of its primary objectives: to control illegal immigration to the United States.

The IRCA represented the first major change in US immigration policy in twenty-two years. In seeking to prevent illegal entry and to gain control over the undocumented population already in the country, it contained two key …

The Child's Understanding Of Functional Relations In The Domain Of Liquid Quantity, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1994

The Child's Understanding Of Functional Relations In The Domain Of Liquid Quantity, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Four liquid comparison tasks were designed to assess children's knowledge of functional relations, one-directional compositions of functional relations (greater + greater yield greater) and countervailing compositions (greater + lesser yield ?) in 4- to 7-year-olds. On one task, in which height indexed quantity, children of every age group performed well. Success on the other comparison tasks was related to operative level, as mdexed by conservation performance, and age. More advanced pre-operational children evidenced a degree of success on the one-directional composition task. Consistent with Schonfeld (1990), the results suggested that at more advanced operative levels: (1) the understanding of increasingly …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

The year 1992 proved to be an extraordinarily successful one for CLAGS. We mounted a series of exciting panels, conferences, and special events, and launched an ambitious program of grants and fellowships for scholars and students. A good portion of the credit for the success of these activities goes to CLAGS's hardworking Board of Directors which undertakes the myriad tasks required to plan and implement our various programs.

Poisons And Antidotes Among The Taman Of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Jay H. Bernstein Apr 1993

Poisons And Antidotes Among The Taman Of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

Among the Taman of kabupaten Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, certain oils are used to cast and counteract spells. Antidotes are said to be made from the same substance as poisons, and thus a given antidote implies ownership of the poison, and this is one reason people are furtive in using, exchanging, and discussing this aspect of folk-medicine. Magical oils are generally obtained outside Taman society, and are used most often to cure illnesses presumed to have been contracted outside the society. These oils contain essences, and so can be reproduced by adding oil. However, specific knowledge is needed to use …

Perceptions Of Patients Meeting The Criteria For A Diagnosis Of "Multiple Chemical Sensitivities": Exploration Of Social Situation And Need, Beth Miriam Lewis Jan 1993

Perceptions Of Patients Meeting The Criteria For A Diagnosis Of "Multiple Chemical Sensitivities": Exploration Of Social Situation And Need, Beth Miriam Lewis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While no one explanation as to the possible nature of "multiple chemical sensitivities" has gained unanimous acceptance within the medical/science community, similar controversy does not exist with regard to the recognition of social problems generated for people suffering from this condition. In an effort to identify areas of psychosocial need requiring social work intervention, a descriptive study was carried out with a group of patients seen in an outpatient occupational health clinic. Medical charts of a deliberate sample of 423 clinic patients, seen during the period 1980-1990, were reviewed, yielding a total of 83 patients meeting criteria specific to MCS. …

Saving The Environment: Science And Social Action, Patricia D'Andrade Jan 1993

Saving The Environment: Science And Social Action, Patricia D'Andrade

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation analyzes environmental arguments for their stance toward science. It is a sociology of knowledge investigation of arguments made primarily by environmental scientists in the United States in the 1960s and 70s.

The environmental crisis puts science in question but at the same time looks to science for information and solutions. Thus, science is a center of contention around which arguments develop and oppositions are established. Science is beginning to take the place of political thought in providing legitimating concepts for arguments intended to effect social change. Major environmental books and articles by American authors of the 1960s and …

Social Order And Contest In Meanings And Power: Black Boycotts Against Korean Shopkeepers In Poor New York City Neighborhoods, Jeongduk Yi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation aims to provide an analysis of the process of social reproduction revealed through the conflict between Korean shopkeepers and poor Black inner city residents in New York City. The major concepts, discussed in the introduction, include culture, power, domination, resistance, and conceptual orders.

The pervasive racism and capitalism in America provides the context where the two minority groups have been constituted and where opposing meanings are contested as the conflict between Korean shopkeepers and poor Blacks develops. State agents, Whites, and news media also join in the process of the conflict. They contest with various combinations of coercion, …

Psychoanalysis And Constructionalism: Clinical And Metapsychological Implications, Richard H. Loewus Jan 1993

Psychoanalysis And Constructionalism: Clinical And Metapsychological Implications, Richard H. Loewus

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Attempts to reconceptualize the epistemological basis of psychoanalytic metapsychology and clinical praxis from constructionalist perspectives are reviewed and critiqued. The constructionalist epistemology of the American philosopher, Nelson Goodman, is absent in these discussions. Goodman offers a relativism with restraints, a constructionalist epistemology that asserts no one given reality to which our constructions must answer, but does not accept that therefore all constructions are equally valid. Instead, constructions, or what Goodman calls world versions must answer to standards of "Rightness". Goodman's reconception of philosophy subsumes the concept of truth as a special class of rightness, and replaces the concept of knowledge …
