The Art And Science Of Place-Based Philanthropy: Themes From A National Convening, Giannina Fehler-Cabral, Jennifer James, Hallie Preskill, Meg Long

The Foundation Review

This article shares insights and implications generated at a convening titled Is This a Better Place? The Art and Science of Place Evaluation. Participants included funders, evaluators, and community partners who came to discuss and share effective learning practices and the role of evaluation in place-based work.

Place-based work requires a long-term investment in collaborative partnerships to create, nurture, and sustain local and systemic changes. In order to support this complex work, partners have to incorporate approaches that are nimble, iterative, and responsive to the changing needs of a “place” over an initiative’s life span.

The convening produced a number …

Partnerships, Paradigms, And Social-System Change, Patricia Jessup, Beverly Parsons, Marah Moore Jun 2016

Partnerships, Paradigms, And Social-System Change, Patricia Jessup, Beverly Parsons, Marah Moore

The Foundation Review

Social systems structures stem from underlying paradigms that are made up of beliefs, perspectives, and assumptions. Changing paradigms is a powerful way to change social systems. Such change is difficult and old paradigms keep pulling systems back to their former state.

This article examines three types of partnerships that focus on these deep structures and paradigms, and that go beyond implementing a project or initiative to create fundamental, lasting change in the underlying beliefs, perspectives, and assumptions on which such systems are grounded.

The functions of each type – project focused, formal-systems-focused, and community-grounded partnerships – are identified, along with …

Developing A Framework For Grant Evaluation: Integrating Accountability And Learning, Shelley Scherer Jun 2016

Developing A Framework For Grant Evaluation: Integrating Accountability And Learning, Shelley Scherer

The Foundation Review

Despite broad consensus among foundations on the value of capturing grant outcomes, there is no consensus on what to evaluate and how to define success, which makes it difficult for staff and grantees to navigate and apply multiple interpretations of evaluation “best practices.”

This article presents three questions designed to help foundations develop a framework for grant evaluation that reflects their beliefs about accountability and learning, balances evaluation costs and benefits, acknowledges the diversity of grants within the foundation’s portfolio, and allows their grantees to understand the foundation’s expectations for evaluation reporting.

A key takeaway from this article, drawn from …

Snowboarding Experiences And Lessons: Snowboarding Through The Years, Matt Bryker May 2016

Snowboarding Experiences And Lessons: Snowboarding Through The Years, Matt Bryker

Honors Projects

Professional snowboarding lessons are expensive. They can cost up to a thousand dollars a day for a private lesson at a high quality mountain. Many people are not willing to put that much of an investment in a sport that they might not even enjoy. For this reason, many people seek out knowledgeable friends in order to learn the sport. By receiving help from a friend it can be a more enjoyable experience as well as a substantially cheaper one. The problem with this system is that many of these friends do not know where to start when teaching snowboarding. …

Food Recovery Program At Farmers’ Markets Increases Access To Fresh Fruits And Vegetables For Food Insecure Individuals, Lisa G. Sisson

Peer Reviewed Articles - Hospitality and Tourism Management

Food recovery programs are an increasingly popular method to decrease the amount of food waste in the United States while increasing healthy food access for food insecure individuals. One such program is the Heartside Gleaning Initiative that began in 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The program partners with low-income volunteers to collect fresh produce from farmers’ markets for redistribution. From June to October 2014, 17,000 pounds of fresh produce was provided to low-income individuals and food pantries. A survey of participants indicated high usage of the produce and high satisfaction with the gleaning program. This program confirms that gleaning is …

Exploring The Relationship Between Entry-Level Masters Program Class Size And Number Of Graduate Credits Offered And Aggregate Nbcot Pass Rates, Scott Truskowski

Funded Articles

The AOTA and ACOTE have discussed a transition to a mandated entry-level clinical doctorate degree (Harvison, 2013). Following the move to the entry-level master’s degree in 2007, the overall national pass rate on the national certification examination fell from 88% in 2006 to 77% by 2009 (Harvison, 2011; Harvison, 2012). This study sought to determine if the number of graduate credits offered or the class size of an entry-level master’s program impacts student outcomes on the national certification examination. Publicly available data was mined from all accredited entry-level master’s programs. Data were imported into the SPSS for statistical analysis. The …

Market Response To Corporate Social Responsibility Rankings, Jackson Lytle

Honors Projects

There have been many opinions on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and whether it has a positive impact on a company's financial status. External pressures are certainly present to encourage these behaviors, but the bottom-line impact is still much debated. By examining the long-term abnormal returns of companies before and after being listed in Forbes’ article titled “America’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens” we are able to understand whether being a socially responsible company results in better stock market returns. We also measured the effect the rankings had on riskiness. We found that in the long-term, companies in the rankings have significantly …
