Empty Coolers At Busy Dining Halls: Solutions To Gvsu’S Failure To Accommodate Students With Food Allergies, Elena Chiu

Honors Projects

GVSU is failing its students with food allergies by not providing the proper accommodations in Campus Dining facilities. This paper provides the experience of two students with food allergies' struggle to eat at GVSU, then takes a brief look into the Americans with Disabilities Act to show the issues and why they need to be fixed. This is followed by a comparison of GVSU's dining program and the highest ranked food allergy safety university, MSU. Using MSU's program as a framework, multiple solutions, such as creating stable meal options and displaying ingredients online, are provided to create a Campus Dining …

Mental Resilience And State Anxiety In Bulgarians Living In Their Country Of Origin Or Abroad During Covid-19 Pandemic, Stanislava Stoyanova

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Comparing state anxiety and mental resilience among people living in their country of origin and emigrants abroad may reveal if they have different experiences of negative emotional states, as well as different resources for coping with changes in everyday life brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 142 Bulgarians living in Bulgaria during COVID-19 pandemic and 142 Bulgarians living in different countries abroad, whose age varied from 21 to 44 years old. The study was conducted online by means of Qualtrics applying Spielberger’s State Anxiety Scale and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale CD-RISC2. State anxiety was significantly lower (t(282) = 3.242, …

Why The General Trust Of Chinese People Is Higher Than That Of Japanese People?, Pingping Lin Jan 2024

Why The General Trust Of Chinese People Is Higher Than That Of Japanese People?, Pingping Lin

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Several major international comparative surveys (World Values Survey, East Asian Social Survey) have repeatedly shown that Chinese people report higher levels of general trust towards people than Japanese people. It has been pointed out that if Chinese people recall the people around them when answering the question “Most people can be trusted?”, this could explain their high general trust (Yoshino and Osaki, 2013), but there are no empirical studies yet. Therefore, in this study, we will compare general trust between Japan and China by focusing on “Who comes to mind in response”. A total of 318 Japanese and 476 Chinese …

Decent Work-Life-Flow And Its Assessment, Jan Philipp Czakert, Florian Scheibein, John Wells, Leonor Pais, Nuno Rebelo Dos Santos, Rita Berger

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This paper presents the underlying theoretical framework, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research activities, as well as preliminary findings on influencing factors for a healthy and sustainable Work-Life-Flow (WLF) in diverse countries. The research is conducted within the scope of the cross-cultural Erasmus+-project, "Excellence based profiling to identify and apply tools and training for a better and sustainable Work-Life-Flow" (2020-1-ES01-KA203-083282). Within this framework, we promote the re-conceptualization of the concept of work-life balance towards a more dynamic and inclusive resource-demands based concept of WLF. The project develops assessment and training tools to foster WLF for individual and organizations alike. To justify this …

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski Jan 2024

Bicultural Identity Integration And Life Satisfaction: Two Generations Of Bangladeshi In The Uk, Raihana Sharmin, Pawel Boski

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study aimed to investigate the bicultural identity integration between 1st and 2nd generation Bangladeshi in the UK and the relationship between various identity profiles with personal and family life satisfaction measures. In line with Boski’s (2021) theoretical framework, cultural identity has been conceptualized in a theoretical three steps model. First, cultures are described on a set of values, to establish their joint and mutually exclusive characteristics. Next participants express their personal preferences on the same set of values. Lastly, each cultural identity is operationalized as a sum of products of cultural descriptors (their weights) and personal preferences. This approach …

Indonesian Couples’ Perception Of Spouse’S Support During Labour And Childbirth, Johanna Natalia Jan 2024

Indonesian Couples’ Perception Of Spouse’S Support During Labour And Childbirth, Johanna Natalia

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The World Health Organisation (WHO, 2017) stressed the importance of support during labour and childbirth to the women. Indonesia’s Ministry of Health in cooperation with the WHO, Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association, and Indonesian Midwives Association recommended a support person (family member) to accompany women during labour and childbirth (Kementrian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia, 2013). However, in most parts of Indonesia, this recommendation has not been applied properly. With support from the management of the maternity centre, this study offered the women to have the husband’s support during labour and childbirth in order to understand the women’s and husband’s perspective of …

Bias And Whiteness In Public Services, Annie Bélanger Jan 2024

Bias And Whiteness In Public Services, Annie Bélanger

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Race and gender bias intersect in particularly crucial way in Libraries as we experience them today with their roots in Victorian virtuous womanhood and an associated service ethic that requires library colleagues to prioritize user satisfaction even if at the cost of staff wellbeing, and at times, safety. This reality has led to an intertwining of identity, worth, and service ethic that is exacerbated through late stage capitalism that rewards business over impact and asks of us to want more.

On this basis, libraries have been ripe for critical review of our practices. As critical librarianship continues to grow, two …

Parental Socialization Goals In Five Countries: Measurement Equivalence And Cross-Country Differences, Ronja A. Runge, Renate Soellner Jan 2024

Parental Socialization Goals In Five Countries: Measurement Equivalence And Cross-Country Differences, Ronja A. Runge, Renate Soellner

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Parental socialization goals are informed by culture. In previous research, it was often assumed that parents in western countries value individualistic socialization goals more, while collectivistic socialization goals are more pronounced in eastern countries. In addition, in Kağitçibasi’s framework, the importance of education and rural or urbanized living surroundings is pronounced, resulting in a third type of cultural model, in which individualistic goals are highly valued, but close family ties continue to be important. Previous research has been inconclusive regarding country differences. One major shortcoming is the lack of testing for measurement invariance (MI). Missing MI might bias results. In …

The Influence Of Cultural Background Information On Emotional Body Language Recognition, Erjia Xu, Ping Hu Jan 2024

The Influence Of Cultural Background Information On Emotional Body Language Recognition, Erjia Xu, Ping Hu

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Culture shapes how people express and feel emotions in specific situations and certain aspects of emotions vary across cultures. Body expressions are as powerful as facial expressions in conveying emotions, with North Americans tending to exhibit more exaggerated emotional body language (EBL) than East Asians (Scherer et al., 2018). Our study used two experiments to explore whether individuals' emotion recognition of EBL was affected by cultural background information. Experiment 1 recruited fifty Chinese participants to explored whether individual recognition of emotions was affected by the cultural background of the expresser. We found that participants were more likely to perceive the …

Perceptions And Attitudes Pertaining To The Uptake Of Paternity Leave In The United Arab Emirates, Teresa Lojzer, Greg Fantham, Cakil Agnew Jan 2024

Perceptions And Attitudes Pertaining To The Uptake Of Paternity Leave In The United Arab Emirates, Teresa Lojzer, Greg Fantham, Cakil Agnew

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This paper investigates how management attitudes within companies influence the uptake of Paternity Leave (PL) and the request for flexible working arrangements among men, contributing to family care. It explores the flexibility stigma and gender stereotypes that act as barriers to men taking PL, referencing global examples to underscore the relevance of incentivized leaves and supportive leadership. The study focuses on balancing work-life responsibilities and challenges the notion that effective fatherhood equates to financial provision alone. It also examines the phenomenon of pluralistic ignorance, where men's perceptions of colleagues' attitudes impact their decisions about PL.

The Conductome – A New Paradigm For Understanding Human Behaviour, Christopher R. Stephens, Dagmara Wrzecionkowska, Estefanía Espitia-Bautista, Roland Díaz-Loving, Gabriela Contreras Jan 2024

The Conductome – A New Paradigm For Understanding Human Behaviour, Christopher R. Stephens, Dagmara Wrzecionkowska, Estefanía Espitia-Bautista, Roland Díaz-Loving, Gabriela Contreras

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

As almost every major problem that humankind faces is a consequence of human behaviour, predicting behaviour and behaviour change is fundamental. Given the multitude of factors that affect our decision making, a transdisciplinary understanding of behaviour is impossible without the integration of data that crosses disciplinary boundaries. The concept of Conduct-“ome” is an analog of those holistic –“omic”-approaches found in the biological sciences which take a “totality of factors” approach, and provides a framework for studying human behaviour in a multifactorial, multidisciplinary context, accounting for a wealth of potential causes of behaviour, from the genetic and epigenetic to psychological, neurological, …

Just Food? Navigating Collective Visions For Food Justice In Grand Rapids, Mi, Jack Boitel Dec 2023

Just Food? Navigating Collective Visions For Food Justice In Grand Rapids, Mi, Jack Boitel

Culminating Experience Projects

This research delves into the multifaceted realm of food justice within Grand Rapids, MI, exploring collective vision-making processes and their intersection with social innovation and systemic change. Grounded in the concepts of "Freedom Dreams" by Robin D.G. Kelley, the study investigates how envisioning change goes beyond goal-setting, encompassing actions and conversations pivotal to transformative processes. The literature review establishes a strong foundation, emphasizing the historical roots of food justice, integration of abolitionist principles, and the imperative of decolonization within broader social justice frameworks. Central to the inquiry is the role of the Michigan Good Food Charter in leading food systems …

Why Autistic Sociality Is Different: Reduced Interest In Competing For Social Status, Catherine L. Caldwell-Harris, Anna M. Schwartz Dec 2023

Why Autistic Sociality Is Different: Reduced Interest In Competing For Social Status, Catherine L. Caldwell-Harris, Anna M. Schwartz

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The complexity of human organizations poses the challenge of understanding and navigating social hierarchies. If 'social impairment' is a defining feature of autism, then these challenges may be heightened for autistic persons. We reject the premise of social deficits but follow recommendations to investigate how autistic social behavior diverges from neurotypical norms. We review autistic writings and also scholarship on reputation management, non-conformity and moral reasoning to argue that autistic people dislike social hierarchies, find status-seeking illogical, prefer egalitarian relationships, and often seek to report wrong-doing by authorities. We outline three possible causes: (1) reduced social motivation; (2) emergent property …

The Future Of Critical Autism Studies (Cas): Thinking Through Critical Discourse Studies And Postcolonial Feminism, Cansu Elmadagli Dec 2023

The Future Of Critical Autism Studies (Cas): Thinking Through Critical Discourse Studies And Postcolonial Feminism, Cansu Elmadagli

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

The field of Critical Autism Studies (CAS) has evolved significantly since its inception, with scholars continually redefining its key tenets and objectives. CAS emerged as a response to conventional medical and social deficit-based models of autism and seeks to challenge the prevailing norm that considers neurotypicality as the unquestioned standard. This article, written by an autistic scholar, aims to contribute to the ongoing discussions in CAS. The article introduces novel perspectives by suggesting connections between CAS, Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), and postcolonial feminism. It advocates for the incorporation of concepts and tools from these traditions to enrich CAS’s approach. Furthermore, …

This list serves as a reminder of this reality through examples.

Beyond The Bell: Rebuilding Care, Civic Learning And Creativity Within Youth Spaces, Michelle R. Haapala Dec 2023

Beyond The Bell: Rebuilding Care, Civic Learning And Creativity Within Youth Spaces, Michelle R. Haapala

Culminating Experience Projects

The purpose of this research is to investigate high school age students’ opportunities within formal classroom settings to engage in care, civic learning, and creativity within a suburban, publicly-funded charter school. This study used thematic analysis and coding methods to organize and find patterns in the qualitative data from surveys distributed to education professionals at Canton Preparatory High School in Canton, Michigan. The goal is to establish a foundation of the perception of care, civic learning, and creativity within school environments and classroom settings. Overall, education professionals rated these categories positively, but with a closer investigation, a disconnect is found. …

The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips Dec 2023

The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips

Culminating Experience Projects

Social innovation scholarship often prioritizes tangible, product-based answers to questions of societal justice without examining the catalyst for change. Exploring the potential of the body to serve as a site of social innovation may complement the goals of emerging paradigms of social innovation that embrace new forms of knowing. The sensory knowledge developed through methods such as Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed is systematized in the multidisciplinary field of somaesthetics, which looks closely at the disciplined cultivation of the body. This research project tracked the perceived body awareness and self-growth of formerly incarcerated individuals following four applied theatre workshops. …
